The only stumbling block, as pointed out by both Peter MacKay, and Stephen Harper today, is the leadership issue, and both sounded very optimistic (even MacKay, surprisingly) that it could be worked out, and that a merger proposal could come very soon.

What needs to be addressed, is how will the leader be selected? A compromise needs to be worked out, and fast.

He's a good MP.

I think Mr. MacKay should be commended for doing something that's right for this nation, against the advice and wishes of the people around him.

I noticed that Pell. I didn't remember a post titled "2 phone calls." Maybe Greg that it was important enough to change the title? It's good news. I am confident that a merger will occur. Even CBC is making it sound that a merger is going to happen using speech like... "The only thing left to be agreed upon by the two parties is the process in which a new leader will be chosen." Let's just hope.

Craig, You listed many excellent reasons why we should be proud to be Canadian. We have built one of the most successful nations in the world. One of tolerance, peace, and political stability. We are a country that presents opportunity to all of its' citizens. We have a strong economy, and an educated work force. There are so many reasons why Canada is such a great country, and I think it's proven as so many immigrants want to live their lives in this country, rather than any other country in the world.

Consider the western nations as big a part of "Canada" as you wish. We stopped being Canadian a long time ago. British Columbia is a Pacific Rim nation; I have no clue what you Canadians have become. I think it's something that is supposed to be like France, but only more so. I might check into it, but Canada isn't a really important topic to British Columbians, so why bother?

Come on, both sides need to grow up and come to an agreement quickly, or they will look foolish.

If they don't merge, Paul Martin and the Liberals will steam roll them.

I think we've come too far in this to go back now. Both the PC's and Tories have caucus meetings tomorrow and both of them will face pressure to get these talks going again.
