  1. Don't be silly. Of course they're anti-American. It has been patently obvious for some time that the Liberals have been doing their level best to portray everything about the United States as bad. And then to associate everything they want to attack with the United States. If you complain about the lousy state of our health care the liberals and left immediately raise the bogeyman of American style health care, portraying it as cold, heartless, and cruel. If people attack multiculturalism on its merits, for how it has led to so many problems, Liberals and leftists accuse you of wanting an "American style" melting pot, and trumpet how much more enlightened our system is then theirs. When the Liberals and left defend their ridiculous gun registration measures they attack their opponents by claiming they are American wannabees, that they support Canada becoming a free-for-all of wild west shootouts like those terrible Americans. They have done everything they possibly can to portray Harper as in the Americans pockets, as believing in American style policies, American style health care, as wanting an American style foreign policy, American style criminal laws, American style support for the military, and American style gun freedom. They've accused him of being a suckup to the Americans, of not loving Canada, of not being patriotic enough, and worst of all, of being on friendly terms with George Bush (the great Satan). The implicit, and often explicit message is that American is a horrible place of misery, racism, poverty, hate and violence, and that anyone who does anything that might make us even a little more like that horrible, awful place is anti-Canadian - and just plane immoral. It's a cheap, shody, unethical, ignorant type of attack, and anyone who doesn't recognize the anti-Americanism of it is deluded, dishonest or both. Absolutely agreed Argus...well put!!!
  2. I wasn't planning to post at this time, but I was blown away by your post. You are obviously a very intelligent individual who understands the Canadian political scene and the importance of Canada/US relations...something too many Canadians take for granted and something that I have stressed for years. Your post is excellent. I am guessing you lived duing the Chretien years. So you are probably aware of the anti-Americanism that was so prevalent in his government. Martin was. When he came to power he promised a renewed relationship based on "respect for our differences" and "shared values." But as we can see, the man is so unscrupulous and full of hypocrisy he is ready to sell out his Canada's vital relationship with the Americans just to save his political future. He is relying on Liberal-induced hatred to bring him victory on Jan. 23. As a nation, we are better than that. I am hoping Harper will bring in a new wave and a new change in federalism and North American relations on Jan. 23.
  3. Sorry I missed that...
  4. Stephen Harper only uses private health care? Anyway, it sounds from the article like Layton was unaware that the clinic was not a public facility; he just went where his doctor referred him. Any implied endorsement of private health care seems to be unintentional. Thanks Melanie!!! Thats all fixed...
  5. Genetically, it can screw things up REAL bad. However, if you use protection, etc. then I guess it is your personal business after all.
  6. http://www.canada.com/national/features/de...c2-24e0381ba5cd It seems like only Stephen Harper has NEVER used private care. At this rate, the only way the public system will survive is to elect a majority Conservative government...
  7. Bullspit! America is a centre-right country. If Perot hadn't split the right in 1992 (he took about 1/3 of Bush Sr's votes), Clinton would have never won (Clinton only got 43% of the popular vote in '92) and it might have been 7 consecutive victories for the Republicans in the White House. And if the Dems don't purge their party of leftwing extremists like Howard Dean, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid, they haven't got a hope in hell in 2008--no matter how hard the MSM campaigns for them. you seem to be confusing right wing conservatives with republicans. there are many republican congressman and senators who aren't conservative ! america is a center very slightly left leaning country. those election numbers are nice but they don't tell you anything about changing demographics and it doesn't account for the eligible thousands who don't turn up to vote. what you have to understand is that in the american republican system, we elect a president only and not an entire cabinet, instead of electing a whole government in canada. Americans are dumber than canadians in many ways (i can say that without bias, i am both). People pay a lot more attention to propaganda, and any kind of scare mongering such as the "war on terror" works. this trend is slowly going to change as more and more hispanics move into middle america. if you look at the numbers in texas, it is slowly changing. in the last 2 presidential elections, there has been a slow move away from the conservatives. Orange county california has long been (and had been one of the last) republican strongholds. Increase in hispanic population enabled congresswoman loretta sanchez to kick out right wing Dornan. Republicans acknowledge that they might have lost Orange County for good. America very much votes based on racial lines. whites make up 70% of america, and slightly higher than 55% vote republican, african americans unanimously vote democrat, hispanics (except cubans) vote democrat. asian vote is split. hispanics have displaced blacks as the largest minority group. Democrats already own new york and california. the only other state with huge electoral college is texas and as i stated, that number is changing. when texas falls, as more and more mexicans move into the state, the republicans will fall-for good, but that won't happen at least for the next 2 decades. What's closer to reality is this: the urban centres vote liberal and the rest votes conservative with some notable exceptions in the far northeast. The states along the coastlines vote predominately liberal and the heartland predominately conservative. And that is true here in Canada. The urban areas are almost always to the left of the rural areas. Canada's urban population carries the weight of the country, whereas Middle America carries a lot of the weight in the States. For these reasons, Canada elects more leftist governments than the Americans. I think this does not mean, however, that more Canadians are liberal and more Americans are conservative, rather just that the respective "minority" groups in each country have a harder time being heard.
  8. Here's The Answer... http://www.canada.com/national/features/de...93-b256d7834f67 I agree with the decision.
  9. Honourable?? Since when do honour and politics mix? I definitely agree with you though. Any public official should step aside when they are the subject of a criminal investigation. I can't find fault with that guys...
  10. It shows, positively I think, that at least some people can put humanity above politics.
  11. If the NDP got more seats than the Bloc in a Conservative minority that would probably mean the Liberals in LAST place. WOW... But I would back Shoop's assessment on that one...
  12. I loved John's "defense" when he was like "Now Michael" in one of the highest voices I have ever heard a man past 14 use. That being said, thanks Monty for the link because I hadn't seen it but was reading about it here all morning.
  13. LMAO... I am really glad that I swallowed my drink before I read that...
  14. Those represent your values, but I am glad you acknolwledge that our relationship with the Americans means something
  15. If we ever had a serious natural disaster in this country we would need the Americans ASAP
  16. I will agree with you that the likes of Carlson and O'Reilly, etc. need to shut up. They are as detrimental to the relationship as Parrish, Chretien, etc. here in Canada. You know, if we really wanted to prove we were more mature than the barbaric Americans we would not respond back with childish dialogue that makes Canadians seem as barbaric as the immature Americans who attack us in the first place. Your remarks, Drea, indicate that you cannot separate good Americans from bad ones. Believe me, we need this relationship. We need to acknowledge our similarities and respect our differences with the Americans.
  17. I thought the Americans hated us? Hopefully the anti-American crowd will quiet down.
  18. But don't you find it a little convenient that Harper's image as a moderate conservative coincided directly with his leadership of the CPC? You don't have to believe the "Liberal garbage" TML, just look at every bloody thing the guy said prior to 2004. It seems you're being deliberately naive in the vain hope of finding a politician you agree with. And people can change, yes, that's true. But people with well thought-out beliefs (and yes, Harper is no ideological slouch) do not change with the wind. They just make it appear so to become elected. I am not ignorant as to every quote Harper said. They were idiotic quotes that were foolishly said. Yet, he has promised to renew federalism (we are badly in need of it) and put his money where his mouth his on a variety of issues that matter to Canadians. And I am ready to give him the benefit of the doubt.
  19. The alternative is to re-elect a government that has had numerous criminal investigations opened by the RCMP. Are we really nuts? No kidding...
  20. You know damn what HONEST POLITICIAN??? I agree with you on that one.
  21. Let us get something straight here THE HONEST POLITICIAN. I have never accused anyone on this board of personally being anti-American. I had no idea that you were not referring to politicians in general. Please don't say "you know damn well." That is implying that I deliberately treated you unfairly and I do not respect this. I am here to debate issues and have a positive conversation with everyone on this board, even the people I disagree with. I was not deliberately treating you like a jerk. That being said, I do hope you realize how we on the right feel about Martin's promise to improve relationship with the Americans.
  22. I agreed with Einstein's quote. That quote has nothing to do with abortion, etc. Eureka if that is what you were referring to.
  23. I have a new idea in mind: A photo of former Justice Minister Anne McLellan and Jean Chretien embracing, then: These two created a gun registry that would apparently cost 30 million of your dollars. It cost $2 billion dollars. But at least it got guns off the streets and AK-47s out of kids hands. Wait. It didn't. The Liberals...did you choose this Canada??? That would be a great ad...
  24. In case you haven't seen it: http://video.canada.com/VideoContent.aspx?&fl=&popup=1 Better be wary of those people handing out poppies in the fall!!!
