So you're saying that Quebecers can be bought? I do not believe it is wrong to utter the maxim..."everyone has a price."
-
He already has changed Canadian politics. When did Canadians last elect a social conservative as Prime Minister? You clearly missed the whole point of that norman. And what is your definition of social conservatism? I mean, I don't see Harper much more conservative socially then Chretien 5 or so years ago...
-
Fair enough post.
-
You show an unbelievable amount of ignorace to this political campaign. Screw corruption right because Mulrooney was corrupt, eh? You think the reason the Liberals lost was because they didn't put up fresh ideas? If these are the people who vote Liberal, it couldn't be more clear why they lost...

Prime Minister Harper Should Dismiss Frank McKenna
tml12 replied to tml12's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I never said Frank McKenna wasn't good. He was a good representative of Canada. Yet, he is tied into the old federal Liberal regime because he was appointed by them. He should be replaced not because he did a bad job, but because Harper needs to clean house. -
Prime Minister Harper Should Dismiss Frank McKenna

A bit of sardonic humour in tha bite their norman? Hard to answer. What's "tha bite their"? "Harper would never appoint a politician to this important job." Who should he appoint? -
I think the most memorable part of the campaign...and the part which will make me laugh for years...is when a profoundly desperate Buzz came out and said: "Vote separatist [bloc] to keep a [supposedly] separatist [Harper] from taking power." Priceless Buzz...have fun in Detroit!!!

What corrupt MPs ran again? That was from stefrocks original post...she said we shouldn't fault the Martin Liberals because all corrupt Liberal MPs lost re-election. Of course, I wouldn't fault Martin if they lost prior to 2004.
-
I'll let you know as soon as I put this bong down.
-
They must have all left Edmonton after the 2004 election and moved to Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver.

"I would like to put in my 2 cents, because that is all I have to offer or will probably get from this new government, I personally think you are all idiots to believe that Stephen Harper is the messiah who is going to change federal politics." Right away you have let everyone know that you want to debate issues in a respectful manner without regard to partisanship and that you are willing to respect everyone's opinions. "I can see through that fake smile of his, how can he go from being an angry right wing leader to this smilie leader overnight as he has done, I think it is bullshit, and most of you are taken in by him." Almost halfway through your anti-Conservative rhetoric and so far your odious jargon has produced other than vicious attacks without basis. "I do not agree with their policies other than one, and that is the accountability act, and that is it, reducing the gst will do nothing other than add more money into the rich's pocket..." I am not a huge fan of reducing the GST but your Liberal Party would have reduced the income tax...something that most certainly would have put more money into the rich's pocket. "Mulroney left in a scandal if you all forgot, his government screwed us on NAFTA brought in the GST and did everything else to Canada including erasing the EI benefits where you could not collect if you quit or got fired, but the liberal government fixed.." That the Liberals need to defend their own party by bringing up Brian Mulrooney is hillarious. "No," Liberals say, "We are not a clean party...compare us to Brian Mulrooney...compare us to Brian Mulrooney PLEASE!!!" BTW: At least Mulrooney's MPs had the audacity to step down rather than make us pay their legal fees like your man Chretien. "unemployment was down to the lowest it has been in 30 years, the dollar went up, our economy has increased, if you cannot see what they have done for our country then you are all blind, and all you like all the others out here in alberta can focus on is the scandal of which PAUL MARTIN and HIS government was exhonerated by Gomery." That is all good and great, at the expense of universal health care and social programs which you apparently care little about. And yes, Martin was exonerated personally because Chretien should have had to accept the ultimate responsibility. That does not mean that there are not corrupt elements still within the Liberal Party that out new government led by Prime Minister Harper will not find. "most of the people involved in that were kicked out or not re-elected... but you do not even see that... did we suffer so bad under the liberal government as idiot Harper and Layton lead us to believe and what the rag newspapers in the SUN were reporting, I believe not, I believe the liberal party sat on it's laurels for too long and did not bring fresh ideas on what they should do and I think now they can." At this point, the liquor bottle must be half empty because you really aren't making much sense anymore. You seem to believe that most of the people were kicked out or not re-elected. Do you have proof of this? If so, do tell. And you also must support the fact that the Liberals lost a lot of ridings in order to ensure their corrupt MPs were not re-elected. You also must fault Martin for allowing corrupt MPs to run again. "Stephen Harper is not the next political messiah and I personally do not trust him nor his party at all, considering they are former reform members from alberta, and maybe all of you should check out a sight that has quotes from Stephen Harper himself, then maybe you will get your heads out of your butts..." Your Liberal Party has presented us with all those links. Of course then, Harper's job was at a LOBBYING group. I suppose you also support missile defence and the war in Iraq. After all, Martin fully supported both of those things while a Liberal leadership candidate. "The conservatives are not something new, what they offer is not that great, heck even their chief economist pulled his recommendation for their platform because it was not the one that they showed him the first time, what does that tell you... oh but Stephen Harper is the new political messiah, lets see how he handles his people and what trouble they will get into then maybe everyone will believe that they are not the perfect politicians they want everyone to believe that they are..." Here you are repeating your blasphemous and fallacious accusations. I will not respond again. "And to the one that called Belinda Stronach a hypocrite, is it hypocritial to believe in something your party does not and go to a party or person that represents your belief's, I think not, your the one being hypocritcal on this, Belinda stuck to her beliefs and I admire that, what are your belief's anyways... this is all I have to say." Hell, I'd stick to my beliefs too for a plum cabinet post. I wonder why she left then? You know, the Conservative leadership convention was two months earlier. I wonder why she suddenly felt the need to go then...and especially after leaving McKay's bed. She is unscrupulous... "A PROUD LIBERAL" A PROUD CONSERVATIVE

Of course, that all depends on the type of system used. In the end, the big winners are the Big Two. The Liberals got a disporportinate level of support in Ontario and Quebec at the expense of the Conservatives, who offset those losses with grossly distorted results in the west (particularly Alberta. Again.) So, to re-visit Argus' initial post, PR is a non-starter for the CPC because they don't stand to make significant enough gains to offset the inevitable losses in their regional strongholds. Barring a major breakthrough that would give them a solid majority (which would involve convincing an additional 20 per cent of Canadians to vote for them), the CPCare probably content with maintaining the status quo (as well as a strong western base and chipping away at the Liberals where they can). You mean the Big Losers are the Big Two. The Greens and NDP would benefit incredibly by PR.

Yeah I feel REAL bad for Landslide Annie... http://www.canada.com/national/features/de...f3-90e0298a4e20 Who the hell gets $100,000/year in pension? I feel some changes are needed, otherwise I need to get elected. Landslide Annie does...as does Martin, Chretien (we even paid his legal fees  ). I hope the Tories reform it all though unlikely...

Hence why I'm considering it. I don't know if I have the patience for more school though. Thanks for the welcome, if any of the other locals don't want to run again, I'll starting making riding association friends ASAP. I've thought about it here, but being from Calgary kind of screws me for ever getting a nod within the area. Best advice? Take a year off and consider it then...

I had been a little skeptical of this idea, and the playing of the supposed "Alberta card" by Hargrove, Martin, and Duceppe. However, I spent a little time browsing over at Babble this morning and was, indeed, taken aback by the amount of anti-Alberta bile I saw. There does indeed seem to be a sense among some of the "progressives" that a hostile foreign power has staged a political coup in Canada. I was of course expecting to see hyperbole about "neocons" and an "agenda of hate" and so on, with the Babblers being what they are. But I was quite unprepared for words like "Almericans" and the sheer amount of anger directed not just at Harper but at *this province.* I don't assume that these people represent all "progressives" or all Ontarions, but that element was certainly in evidence in what I read there this morning. -k Ontario, especially Toronto, buys into every Joe Canadian lie the pre-merger Molson and the Liberal Party feeds them. As for Atlantic Canada, I think Harper's "entitlement" comment sums it up well. I think it is about time the west has a chance to govern, I have lived her in the East all my life and I think, with the country as it is now, we need to see the west give federalism a chance.

Rubbish. The reason Quebecers are most supportive of equal marriage is the fact that they know what it's like to be a minority and the importance of defending minority rights from the tyrrany of the majority. Quebecers are also among the most socially liberal and irreligious folks in Canada: I don't think they care much about Anglo-Saxon Porotestant Canada's traditions. In fact, if I were a Quebecer and saw the zeal with which other Canadians want to roll back pminority rights, I'd have to wonder where I would be on the list. The reason Quebecers are most supportive of SSM is because Quebecers are the most socially liberal people in Canada because of the Quiet Revolution years ago. BD...I really don't know where you think of some of these things.
-
I agree SSM should be put to a close. But how can he simply ignore what he promised during the campaign? I mean he has been promising this for close to a year now. I just can't see him not doing it.

Give an example of republicans race baiting. The Rush Limbaugh show provides almost daily examples, particularly re: Carol Moseley-Braun, Jesse Jackson, etc. In terms of politicians, the Trent Lott fiasco comes to mind. 1.) I listen to Rush and I don't recall any isntances of him "race-baiting". Making fun of Jesse jackson is not race-baiting. The man mankes an ass out of himself and Rush simply makes fun or him for doing it. 2.) Trent lott wasn't pitting the race against each other as a tatic, as the dems do in every election and on most social issues (Mayor Nagin's "chocolate city" & Hillary's "planation" comments were just examples from last week). He was just made a racist comment. Not nearly as bad as say bieng the leader of the KKK as Senator Byrd. How did most Americans respond to that "chocolate" comment America1? I mean, it could be racist but coming from Nagin it just sounded bizarre...

That was LOW Shoop... Now that I've read the other part of your post though, Harper did promise the more socially right-wing part of his party that he would bring it up as a free vote and he has to. It will be very close...as another post started recounts, we would need to know how many anti-SSM Liberals won.
-
You know if it was a Liberal minority again, I was hoping Martin and Harper would step down and be replaced by McKay and Stronach. THAT would be a campaign...

I think I'm going to need some cognac pretty quick. Martin's speech does sound better when you can actual hear it, this is first for him. Good for Martin though, however much he bottomed out his party and was a weak Prime Minister, what he did in the Finance portfolio was quite an accomplishment, and he deserves a ton of credit for that. Good people can even come out of the Liberal Party, sometimes. Look he is a brilliant economist and was quite impressive during the Mexican Peso Crisis. But once at the top he just couldn't get the job done. I think he'll be retiring to the Eastern Townships now.

Nah, all the paper is burned already. Didn't you see the fire from where you are last night tml? It is too bad I couldn't find the RCMP's phone number.
