  1. As someone who crosses the border more than 10 times per year and who has worked with border guards in different areas there is no doubt in my mind border guards need to be armed. This Eastern Canadian obsession that guns are bad and the idiotic Liberal proposal to ban guns are just examples of leftist ignorance. Train them, arm them, and secure this country's borders NOW. Agreed. I see it even more than you do. I cross twice a day. One there and once back. If we don't they're going to keep walking off the job until they get it. About once every week the people at the border walk off the job in protest. And I can imagine the traffic...especially if you need to do it everyday. I hope PM Harper gets them armed soon.
  2. There are two types of people "opposed" to gay marriage. There are those like the Christian right in the States who say gay marriage or unions or anything is unconstitutional. Then there are moderates who argue that gay marriage is fine as long as religions and governments don't overstep their bounds. I prefer the latter...the former is quite homophobic.
  3. But Hugh Segal was appointed to the Senate last year by the same old federal Liberal regime yet he worked full-time as Harper's campaign co-chair and is currently working as his advisor while being paid for his appointed Senate position by all Canadian taxpayers. Does this mean that Segal is tainted as well? And what does it say about Harper's integrity that he's prepared to have Segal work for him even though he was appointed By Martin and is paid for by all taxpayers, even those who don't support the Conservatives? Segal was a conservative for years...Martin appointed him because he wanted to be "nice" (or because he wanted to buy him off because he knew Segal's ultimate allegiance would be to the conservatives). I respect Segal more for not just becoming another Liberal buy-out and I certainly respect him more for retaining his allegiances.
  4. That's true, too. I tried explaining this to people outside the USA who don't like Bush. I don't like Bush either. But all the screaming and hatred towards Americans who vote for him doesn't do them a whit of good. Why? If the prevailing assumption is that Canada or the EU is going to criticise the USA and slam its citizens and leadership no matter what the USA does, then why shouldn't the USA just do what it wants to do and ignore the EU and Canada alike? There's been no detriment to it so far. What's Canada going to do to the Americans anyway? Sell its oil to China instead? Does Canada really think it's in a position to threaten the United States? Good Lord, I wish people would grow brains on these issues. If you want to influence American policy and American voters, do it by making the success of Canada important, personally and economically, to Americans -- with things like a real free trade zone, removing restrictions on professional services, eliminating restrictions on work and residency, etc., etc., etc. Otherwise, all you're doing is chopping off your nose to spite your face. You're right again. I am no fan of Bush...I liked his father much more. When you stray too far from the centre, I don't like it. I am quite moderate, perhaps I lean right more than left (if only because I come from a family of management lawyers and I live in Quebec where unions strike so much a friend of mine from France said it made it look like there hadn't been a strike in France in 50 yeear...I probably should add, I have been in union before ). I think Harper should look forward to getting an invitation to go to Bush's ranch and talk about how he can improve relations and respect Canadian sovereignty. This is a big chance for both men to put their countries before ideology and pass racism.
  5. Drea, "Caroline Parish said ONE THING, ONE TIME." I don't know how I missed this the first time I read your post. Parrish has a history of making anti-American remarks, as does Chretien...
  6. Good point Yank. For years the Liberals got away with their ridiculous and hateful comments (spurred on by Chretien) and the Americans paid no attention. Carolyn Parrish was a typical example of a five year-old in a fifty year-old's clothing. I used to read her blog on carolynparrish.ca and read her ridiculous far left posts about governing Canada, etc. I do not know how the people in Ontario voted for her but I couldn't imagine she had much of a base among voters over 25.
  7. As someone who crosses the border more than 10 times per year and who has worked with border guards in different areas there is no doubt in my mind border guards need to be armed. 8. Drea, "NAFTA ruled that Canada is NOT dumping lumber below cost. WHEN is the USA going to comply with the rules? Oh riiiiight -- they only follow the rules when it suits them." I admit the Americans have been quite arrogant and stubborn in regards to the Byrd Amendment but you must admit our government here has not been so sweet and kind on other issues either. As Harper put it, the Liberals allowed relations to get so bad, Bush just doesn't seem to care about Canada's interests. Also, in Martin's never-ending dithering on missile defence, etc. I am not surprised the U.S. was in no rush to take action. Hopefully now, things will be different. "We DON'T have "unfettered" access to your markets. When was the last time you bought Canadian Cheddar in the US at the same price as US cheese?" I don't often go shopping in the U.S. and when I do I buy Vermont cheddar. "When I go to buy an apple, the BC apple is more expensive than the American apple -- dumping cheap friggin' apples into our market! Grown by Mexican labourers below minimum wage with no benefits just so you can sell cheap apples. Damn them apples. LOL And WINE! Friggin California wine! Tastes like crap, but it's CHEAP, eh." I am a HUGE fan of White Zinfandel...better than any wine you buy in the food store here (although I love our Quebec apple cider). "Americans are busily buying up Canadian oil sands (as we speak/type)... not too long ago China wanted to buy California Oil but were told there are a "security risk" Pfft. America isn't concerned about a "security risk" they simply want to hog all the world's oil (including ours)." If I were the U.S. government, I would sure as heck be more concerned about China investing oil in the States than the Canadian government investing in oil here...that is a no-brainer... And you don't think Canada wants in on world oil? Why do you think the Liberals (Chretien and Martin) sucked up to Bush after refusing the initial invasion of Iraq. The Liberals are looking to have it both ways...
  9. Would you agree that the only reason we're talking about him is because of what happened? I mean, how many Americans knew about this guy before last summer?
  10. CanWest papers like The National Post tend to be more right-leaning.
  11. I would still like to see them cut in a completely non-partisan fashion.
  12. You don't think China has an army? What's a left-wing neo-commie and how do they differ from right-wing neo-commies? Of course China has an army. My point is you should never strive for extremism. The Chinese strove for Communism (extremism) ended up with totalitarianism (extremism) and are finally moving toward a capitalist society.
  13. I find these discussions of media bias extremely simplistic. The G&M is an economically right-wing but socially libertarian paper. This means people who assume that right wing economic thinking must also be coupled with social conservative values will think the G&M is left wing because of its positions on issues like SSM. Calling the G&M a left wing paper is aburd.Furthermore, in the 80s the G&M was an unapologetic supported of the PCs under Mulroney. It only started to support the Liberals after the PCs split into the Reform party and BQ. Fair enough Sparkawk...it was in the 1990s that I was saying they were pro-Liberal anyway...
  14. It is 0 and a blizzard here...
  15. Not that I've seen, the reign of terror has moved them all underground I guess? Or removed them all together. Talk about the transition team...I am moving there!!! We don't even have a Conservative MP on the island of Montreal...
  16. China is nowhere near Marxist! Actually, noone is! You should consider that a good thing... Campus-communists are my favourite. They tend to be those that never have to work during university and are either supported by the government or rich folks back home. My general profile of campus-communists. I am lucky enough to be at the most Conservative university in Canada, so I don't get to share in on this entertainment. Maybe we should take a lesson from how it never turns out 'right' and give up on this communism already. How did we get to this from a 'Now that Martin has resigned' thread? I don't know... Somebody must have asked me something about it. There are no campus lefties in Calgary Geoffrey???
  17. They thought it was a retarded thing to say with underpinning racist connotations. If a white politician said "we are going to make San Diego white again". He/She would have been chased out of office. See, what I mean on the Dem racial double standard. I can't disagree with you there...
  18. As I have said many times before, let the State and various religious institutions define their religious values and then let us be on with it, not allowing any of them to be intertwined...
  19. Trudeau imposed bilingualism on Canada because he wanted French and English Canadians to be at home and receive services in both languages throughout this country. Canada never became bilingual (but bilingualism became one of the myths of Canada.) It never happened and it never worked...
  20. Fair response. I think they were disingenuous and actually quite distasteful...I know people who didn't vote Liberal because of them.
  21. He has been banned. I don't know why...maybe it was that signature of his...
  22. He'll improve Canada-U.S. relations I sincerely hope. CBC is just worried (and I hope rightly so) about losing their leftist funding from the Libs. I mean, they want to continue making shows about Canadians never use the term "indian" and how Americans don't know what date squares are... BTW: CBC really tried to help the Liberal during HNIC. I mean, it was bad enough the Habs were losing and then during every commercial break CBC kept playing those disgusting Liberal negative ads...
  23. Kiraly, The Montreal Gazette and La Presse endorsed the Conservatives that's correct.
  24. The Globe and Mail traditionally supported the Liberals but I haven't read their paper in years. Apparently recently they have shifted to the right with John Ibbitson, etc.
  25. Have you ever met one of those university-campus far left-wingers who say "marxism is misunderstood" and that China is not Marxist, etc. China is nowhere near Marxist! Actually, noone is! You should consider that a good thing...
