Canada closes embassy in Iran, expels diplomats.

So is it your view that we should ignore the comment from their leaders about the destruction of Israel? There are well documented comments made about wanting to destroy Israel, we should ignore those. You know what I find really sad? The events of World War Two could have been avoided if somebody had bothered to read the book of a little Austrian Corporal and taken him seriously. He wrote a book and in that book he wrote what he will do if given half a chance, and we saw what happened when nobody bothered to read what he wrote. This guy is making it twice as easy, he is telling us exactly what they want to do to Israel should they get the chance and people don't want to believe that either. I wonder what the next guy will do... -

Canada does not say you CANT go, the government says you SHOULD NOT go but if you must be really careful and you are on your own. You can take the most heart wrenching story and it still doesn't change the fact that you go to a dangerous place by your own choice. People have to be responsible for the decisions in their lives, no matter how hard or sad they may be, if you choose to go you should go with the knowledge that you are on your own. What was it you were saying about me telling people how they would act, or how they feel or think? The Government is NOT I repeat NOT forbidding you to go, they are saying that you SHOULD NOT I say again SHOULD NOT go! http://www.voyage.gc.ca/countries_pays/report_rapport-eng.asp?id=132000 Maybe you need to reread what they are saying. And here goes your theory about the sick mother: I have a good understanding of the day to day work that goes on in an embassy. They are bound to the laws of the land, the land being Iran and the law being that such a thing as a dual citizenship does not exist. You can't help a Canadian if Iran does not recognize him as a Canadian. If you don't know that the Embassy can't do anything to help a dual citizen of Iran and Canada maybe you should not be so vocal. The diplomats and embassy staff may work hard, but when their hands are essentially tied that does not equal to much. -

So they are not the peaceful innocent nice guys you portray them as are they? The Question is are you willing to put weapons that could potentially wipe out hundreds of thousands or millions of lives in their hands when their rhetoric is so openly genocidal? Would you have the same attitude if I said I will kill you and your whole emily if I had a rifle, and then I was trying to get a rifle for the purpose of "hunting"? People see Iran, and say they are peaceful even though all they talk about was wiping out the jews, which doesn't seem to nice or peaceful to me, I hope we all know what happened when the last guy said he wanted to get rid of some jews. -

I don't think the British or Americans will be in much of a position to help their own citizens so we will be all in the same boat. I don't think we should risk people's lives just become some idiot(s) decided to go to Iran for business or pleasure. If you are told not to go to country X then don't go there, if you decide to go to country X do not expect any help because we have no assets on the ground to help you. And how has the embassy done anything of use to them? I think it was a mistake to kick the Iranian diplomats out of Ottawa but when it comes to keeping Canadians safe, I am all for it. -

Carry out what job? I was told that when overseas and if in trouble to go to the British Or American Embassy because I would likely receive more help than from a Canadian Embassy which is slow to help with very limited abilities. Right now the government says that you should go to Iran, and if you do go it would be at your own risk. -

I am saying that waiting till a war breaks out will be too late for those people on the ground. War may or may not happen but it is the job of the Government of Canada to get our citizens alive rather than body bags, with more and more restrictions placed on Iran one spark could bring forth a war and we may not get months, weeks, days or even hours of warning so for the government it means that its would be better to keep our people safe then to explain to their families that the government gambled with their lives. -

No, this is us getting the frig out of there before we need to send in soldiers to rescue our people. Our Government realizes that we have little say if Iran is to be attacked or not... therefore we need to protect our citizens because who else will? -
The American Colonies in 1760 were most definitely not moving away from the British Empire, they started to drift away from the Empire for various reasons in the subsequent decade and a half when the British kept a large force in North American even after the Major threat of the French was removed amongst other things. One of the reasons that led to the Empire and the 13 Colonies to drift Apart was the view that Quebec was getting some form of Preferential treatment. In effect the British bought Quebec's loyalty by letting them live as they had before with minimal interference thereby buying their loyalty in the following wars that would hit the continent.

I'm talking about a potential wartime situation, Canada has proven that we will use our embassy resources and staff to help the US and even if not directly involved in a conflict with Iran we would be highly suspect. Its one thing for the British to raid an embassy to get a alleged rapist during peacetime, its another thing for Iran to do so during wartime with the evidence that we forged documents to get Americans out. -

What kind of work? Making fake documents to get American citizens posing as Canadians out of Iran? That Kind of work? And by the way, What happened in 1979? I believe there was an embassy involved somehow... The US is moving more and more military assets to the area, Iran's economy is taking hit after hit so I can see since both sides are a little trigger happy a small incident expanding dramatically. Iran can take over the Canadian Embassy and they would have perfectly legitimate excuse because Canada did something to help out US citizens and then advertised it to the world. -

How stupid do you think they are? Just because of what they did in 79 will mean that we are the first target next time around so that we can't do it again. It would have been more effective if no one knew about it... If you were the government of Iran, and you know that last time around the Canadian Embassy did those things what would you do? If it were me, at the first sign of hostilities I would raid the Embassy and capture everyone inside as the Canadian Government has proven what they can do. -

Do you honestly think that our embassy can do anything should things get heated? Im sure the Canadian Embassy would be the first to be taken over. What can they do? -

Or maybe the Government realizes that things are getting pretty tense in there and would like to get out before we have to send the Special Forces to rescue the diplomats and the diplomatic staff. -

So you think that the Liberal Government before the Conservatives was adept at solving such issues? -

Yeah but they have a history of covert aggression... but I guess that doesn't count does it? -
You are Quebec first until you need something from Canada then suddenly people who are Quebec first suddenly become Patriotic Canadians. You have not explained what being a nation means, you want to be independent nation in a united Canada and that will never happen, you are a province in Canada, or an Independent Nation,
-
And New France was a French Colony thus they were French Nationals, Protected By French Regular Army Soldiers, Led by French Regular Army Officers supplying militiamen to the defence of the FRENCH Colony. If the British had decided to get rid of them they could have handed them off to France during the Negotiations or send them to every corner of the Empire. Good luck keeping your culture alive if all 70,000 people of Quebec were send in small groups to Australia, Africa, South America, Australia and the 13 Colonies. They were French subjects, just because some of them happened to be born in Quebec means nothing.
-
Sure they could, who would stop them? The UN? If sending them back to France didn't work then they could choose from dispersing the Quebecers to any corner of their empire. As part of the Peace Negotiations they could have shipped them back to France right along with the French Soldiers they Captured.
-
Yeah, well have you ever wondered where Quebec would be if the British had decided to force their will on Quebec? Redraw the landownership and give most of it away to English speakers from the British Colonies to the south, place religious and language restrictions and suddenly Quebec's survival is in question.
-
And lucky for the French Speaking population the British did not force them to give up their way of life in 1760 thus making 1840 unlikely to succeed. The British Empire had a choice, please Quebec and leave them be in 1760, which they did or impose certain restrictions to force assimilate Quebec with the rest of their North American Colonies. They could have decided that Quebec was full full of French Nationals and thus poses a threat to their security and thus they could have send them packing back to France or offered incentives to people from the colonies to the south to flood Quebec and thus assimilate Quebec in a short time.
-
They do have an equal say, and as is often the case there is no clear majority in anything. What Benz is complaining about is that the French Speaking people are always the minority which is not the case as the rest of us rarely speak with a single voice.
-
Ok so let me be short and to the point, 1760 Quebec falls to the British they did not try to assimilate Quebec, individuals might have presented ill though out plans but they did not full heartedly try to do so otherwise We wouldn't be having this discussion... just ask the Acadians.
-
Sure they did, people elected the politicians who voted in their name. No, I am talking about your complaining that anglophones who make a majority "force" Quebecers to do such nasty little things as observe the law of the land and religious freedom, since most Canadians do want to observe the law and religious freedom you are SOL. So what is your issue with it? Is your issue that Quebec is not on par with the federal government? Is your issue that Quebecers don't get enough hugs from the ROC? Great, then we can have the People of Ontario being recognized as a nation, Alberta as well, while we are there Newfoundland gets recognized as a nation and then what? But then what is your issue? You want someone to say you are a nation? Great you are a nation trapped in the body of a province...happy? I don't agree with the division but the base concept is sound. Yet the chinese don't count because they don't live in CANADA... You seem to have major issues when an overwhelming majority of Canadians "forces" Quebec to do something but you have no issue forcing people to stay with an independent Quebec should that ever happen. Ok, and Trudeau was fighting for what? Was he not fighting for Canada? Convince enough Separatists and the problem might solve itself by Quebec Separating, albeit in a much smaller piece of territory as there would be those pesky people who want to remain Canadian and thus Quebec will be split in a New nation as well as a province because canada will abandon millions of its citizens and thus force them to live in a different country and give up their citizenship. So why is Quebec always interested in whats best for Quebec rather than say whats best for Alberta? Or Ontario? Or BC? A premier will not screw over his/her own constituents in order to appease Quebec
