  1. As a Nation, Canada was never united - spare me Vimy Ridge, War of 1812, Fenian Raids and of course the French Indian wars - arguably all British history - British troops - peace negotiations? Canada has a Head of State (King of Canada) that is seated thousands of miles away. The Constitution is a sacred cow in the fact that the elected officials dare not open discussion on any part of it lest the demands evoked destroy the country itself. Further - Canada has a Constitution that potentially cannot be enforced. Canada also has a province advocating separatism, governed by an administration that promotes it thru LEGISLATION and federal governments locked in irons for fear of losing the french ballot. This same provincial separatist government has a federal wing that sits in parliament and has the potential of determining NATIONAL policy decisions. I chuckle when I think that a separatist party has the potential to become the official opposition. But let us look at American history, specifically Manifest Destiny and more recently the Monroe Doctrine (Venezuela) . The Declaration of Independence, War of 1812, Louisiana Purchase, Civil War, Alaska - panhandle, Florida, Oregon, Spanish American War, Mexican American War. Those that say Americans and Canadians are the same should put down the bong - our history is completely different - we are (or were) far more British and Great Britain was our Aegis in the World. Until the repatriation of the British North America act, GB determined to a large degree Canada's sovereignty. Examine the Boer War (both), WWI, WWII - we were labelled colonials, mother GB called and Canada responded - Quebec notwithstanding - that said, conscription almost destroyed the country. The likelihood of Canada breaking up is indeed a possibility - the problem for us is the changes that Trump is introducing are generational - for those that are interested it might be worth your while to examine Project 2025. The genius of that is basically destroying the Executive guard rails by restructuring the Civil Service (mass firing / rehiring) to create a legacy that will endure beyond Trump. Need I add that 'rule the Courts, rule the land'?
  2. oh, indeed, ergo the necessity of having reliable allies. NATO was an absolute bargain - all Canada needed to do was have a credible fighting force, ie. well trained, equipped, deployable at short notice.
  3. re: What exactly is wrong with China burning less fossil fuels to ship most of the planet's consumables to it by going thru the Arctic? Suppose that's one way to look at it. Canada asserts that the Northwest Passage is part of its INTERNAL waters and subject to Canadian laws? However, China views it as an international strait, advocating for unfettered passage. Increased Chinese shipping activity could pressure Canada to DEFEND it territorial claim and potentially lead to diplomatic disputes, esp if future Chinese policy shifts toward treating the route as international waters.
  4. You mean the United States that is the largest economy in the world, our largest trading partner (still) and geo-adjacent - that United States?
  5. the arctic ocean, specifically the Northwest Passage, is hugely strategic - unfortunately it's in our backyard? Soon, it will become a major shipping route for China - why take the Panama (Trump wants that too) when it's easier and a shorter route thru the north - did I mention Greenland (Trump wants that too)? I have no doubt that without allies, Canada will lose our northern sovereignty. Canada is like a whore laying on the ground with her legs open.
  6. Anyone want to explain why Canada went metric.......... what genius decided on that?
  7. re: It’s insane how Canadians would rather become a third world than be Americans. Akin to what Trump is saying about Ukraine .......... except it's Russia. Canada has never had to fight for it's sovereignty - we had GB and they basically decided that until late 20th century.
  8. I really don't give a shite what the American's do domestically politically - suffice to say that the Nation is on the decline - the changes(?) that are being introduced by TACO are generational. The real question is where does that put the West in terms of security? I will agree that the U.S. was the leader of the so-called free world - with Trump at the helm there is no question that so-called bad actors are no doubt seeing their chance to act. What is really concerning about TACO's administration is that he had surrounded himself with those that will not talk truth to power - most alarming is the military leadership -akin to what Stalin did in the 1930's ........ leaving him a dollar short when the NAZI came knocking.
  9. Strategically, what Ukraine would settle for and really what their realistic goal is at this juncture is an armistice. An armistice would end hostilities without a format peace treaty or recognition of Russia's claim to annexed Ukrainian territory. Of course Russia (Putin) does not want this type of settlement - the reason is that if he did agree to it after sacrificing hundreds of thousands of lives he would literally be finished. Putin is fighting for survival as much as Ukraine.
  10. Exaggerating, perhaps - hope so? On the other hand hack politicians thru the notwithstanding clause do have the power to overpower (defer) a Supreme Court ruling.
  11. CANADA has a constitution in name only - the regrets are only beginning. As the use of the NWC becomes more normalized expect Quebec increasingly to use it more often to further their own separatist goals. You are being incredibly naive to expect a politician's moral compass to trump his/her political ambitions. OMG, man .... the world is going the other way.
  12. arguably Canada will design and build it's own fighter a/c before it does same re: subs! Hilarious! Out of all the military platforms warships are the most difficult and subs are in a class by themselves in terms of complexity.
  13. ........... on the other hand it has been said that Canada is a mosaic - not a melting pot. We are a country without a culture - yogurt notwithstanding.
  14. University would provide degrees in basket weaving if they thought it profitable. Is the knowledge relevant - more importantly, will it be relevant - was it worth the squeeze$$$$.
  15. Biden was being directed / steered by the power behind his throne - there was a conspiracy in the Dem camp - the strategy was that Biden would win the Gen and then due to poor health resign leaving the path open to Harris. IF Biden succumbs to his latest diagnosis - standby! Manna for the political right in the U.S..
  16. .............. really not sure how French Canadians could equate Trump with survival - just the opposite - Trump is a fascist? On the other hand fascism is alive and well in Quebec - believe they use the alternate - Nationalism?
  17. Post secondary education is a business ........an industry? It generates wealth for the provider.
  18. Gentlemen, what is really hilarious is Canada's so-called Constitution - specifically Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Any Constitution ruling upheld by our esteemed Superior Court by a bunch of hack politicians using the notwithstanding clause is not worth the paper it is written on. I believe Trudeau Snr. is responsible for that - Pierre sowed the wind with it and Canada is going to reap the whirlwind.
  19. Trump believes that Alberta was part of the Louisiana Purchase - he absolutely believes that Canada is p/o the U.S. Manifest Destiny.
  20. ............. laughable we use to refer to him as Darth Vader - the destroyer of Worlds.
  21. There has likely never been a time in Canadian history when Quebec secession has been less of a real concern. Trump would give short shrift to an Quebec demand, divide and conquer strategy notwithstanding. If the political Left doesn't get their platform out of bathrooms look forward to a 3rd Trump term. Any yes, there are ways he could accomplish it - the Constitution, prevents it, you say - ah no, the Constitution will enable the coup. Of course that is not to say that Quebec won't use rhetoric to back their demands, like they always have.
