Diversification Efforts: Critics and analysts acknowledge that while the efforts to diversify are necessary, some argue that these new partners are not sufficient to fully offset the economic impact of reduced trade with the U.S.. Productivity Concerns: Concerns have been raised by the IMF and other experts that without boosting domestic innovation, new trade partnerships might not produce the desired growth. Political Debate: The shift away from the U.S. has been a point of debate, with some viewing it as essential for long-term independence, while others, particularly those in sectors heavily integrated with the U.S. market, have expressed concern.

Comprehension difficulties again. We started off with a 9% tariff and ended up with a 15% tariff and kicked the auto industry in the nuts. Your knight in shining armor is just another hollow man.

Prior to the major trade escalation in late 2024 and 2025, Canadian canola typically faced a standard Most-Favoured-Nation (MFN) tariff of 9% for seeds. While there were no broad retaliatory "punishing" tariffs during this period, the trade relationship was defined by non-tariff barriers and a major diplomatic suspension in 2019. Recent Relief: Following a January 2026 agreement, seed duties were reduced to a combined rate of 15% (a 5.9% anti-dumping duty plus the 9% MFN duty) effective March 1, 2026. Well that was a major win.
