The initial NYT report that he was crushed with a fire extinguisher was never explicitly confirmed by Capitol police. They only said he "was injured while physically engaging with protesters, and passed away at 9:30 p.m. the following day “due to injuries sustained while on-duty.”
The NYT then walked back the fire extinguisher part because it was unconfirmed. Then, dishonest Trumper insurrectionists used that to try to create an alternate reality where he died of a heart attack. The fact is he was murdered by rioting Trumpers with or without a fire extinguisher. Probably with, since that's what at least one witness said.
