  1. no worries scriblett. margrace appears to be a hit and run leftie loonie. Wild assertions like that with no support are just plain sad. No wonder people tune out so many self-proclaimed socialists. Huh ! What planet are you on?
  2. Are you talking about people who throw out neo-con or liberals? I am guessing you would agree that your statement applies equally well to both groups of people.
  3. If it was just meant to be welfare to residents of the city why not run a lottery. However many *jobs* were scheduled to be created in the programme, that is how many *winners* of the lottery there should have been. Every winner would have gotten the fair market value of their house, if they owned one, plus $100,000 to move their family to an area of the country with higher employment and living expenses while finding a new job. The government would still have saved at least a billion dollars with this programme alternative. There really is no way to justify the gun registry on any level.
  4. Who is a potential Liberal leader that could beat the Conservatives? The Conservatives are doing a pretty good job of staying on message so far. the budget will be a big one, that's for sure. I would look for all the five priorities to be fulfilled.
  5. The comparisons with Stronach are pretty weak. Of course the Emerson thing will be a footnote. Although look for the Liberals to try and dredge up the issue once Parliament starts to sit.
  6. Nobody calls the CTV *right-wing media*. Does that somehow help you justify the brutal left-wing bias of the CBC in your mind?
  7. Interesting how the only real support the CBC gets is from the left. For the rest of people it seems like it is easier to let things be than to challenge the status quo. Quite sad really.
  8. Maybe, being out of power for so long has some of us oversimplifying the way things get done. What are the repercussions of *just abolishing* the Gun Registry? Could there be some unintended consequences from doing so? There are a lot of reasons for forming a committee other than to consider not doing it at all. btw, I don't think MPs get extra cash for sitting on committees...
  9. Hmmm, two cabinet ministers and the former critic for the gun registry sitting on a committe to plan how to abolish the waste of cash. You dismiss it as *getting together for dinner* at taxpayers expense? Any actual proof they are meeting for dinner? Never mind whether or not it is on taxpayer's expense.
  10. The cultural benefits of supporting Canadian television production are taken care of *outside* the CBC. There is no problem with subsidies to producing Canadian TV shows. The problem is with the obvious agenda the CBC brings to presenting the news via The National and The Hour, amongst other shows.
  11. I don't even understand what *freeped* means. Care to explain? And what the American gun lobby would have to gain by doing so. Any evidence for these *break-ins* to steal guns?
  12. How will Americans control our lumber? The U.S. has no desire to *get rid* of Canadian unions. Don't even see it in the U.S.'s advantage to relegate all Canadian jobs to minimum wage. (Or lower ) Do you have any support for this rhetoric? Support, we don't need no stinking support...
  13. All or none is a pretty weak argument. Leave the cultural merits of the CBC and skating rinks aside. Obesity, both adult and childhood, is a major problem in Canadian society. The costs of maintaining local arenas could be seen as the ounce of prevention worth the pound of cure in this instance. Are there any areas in which the CBC can be seen to save the country further expenses down the road?
  14. You know a programme has no right to exist if the only qualm with it being cancelled is that the jobs it *created* will disappear. Government jobs should only exist when the programmes they are related to do some other good for out society. Clearly not the case in this example.
  15. No doubt. Canadians have such little influence in the world it is disturbing. Why would the world community ever rally around a Canadian-lead invasion of anywhere? (That is if we had the military to lead an invasion force.)
  16. Harper will make some good things happen very quickly with the U.S. Resolving softwood lumber. Creating a better framework for dealing with recurrences of BSE. Most importantly, being able to work professionally with the President of the United States. (He probably is best to not go hunting with Cheney though.)
  17. Hmmm, pretty convenient how the percentage of BCers who disagree with Emerson's appointment pretty much exactly match the percentage of BCers who voted against the CPC in the last election. So I guess you also shouldn't be too excited about *evidence* in this link you provided.
  18. So the Conservatives are already moving to scrap the hated gun registry - link. Good for them. A good step. Appealing to their base and showing their promises will be kept.
  19. I still doubt the Emerson move. But I think the Canadian public have shown their wisdom yet again. Despite the best efforts of the NDP in BC and the CBC. The Emerson story has blown over and Canadians are giving their support to the Prime Minister.
  20. Shakey, I agree with you that none of the four I mentioned are great quality. But they have to be considered the *frontrunners* at this point. I don't believe McKenna or Tobin were sandbagging. Only time will tell on that one though... Actually it would probably be th *fifth* slimmest minority after: 1925, 1957, 1962 and 1972.
  21. Very interesting. Given that Pearson never won a majority it would appear that he was never able to convince the Canadian public of his leadership abilities. Who exactly did he inspire outside the narrow minority of Canadians who supported him election after election. If you really feel that it is a sense of vision that counts then it is definitely too early to judge Harper. I have become more and more a Harper supporter because of the way he ran this campaign. That is why I am willing to trust his instincts on this Emerson fiasco.
  22. Kudos to Ezra. He used to be a windbag on the grandest of scales. However, he has *matured* a lot in the last few years. I saw him interviewed by Ravi Bachiwal on CTV NewsNet yesterday. Bachiwal asked him what he was doing to help the healing process. Levant answered fairly that he wasn't Oprah Winfrey and his job wasn't to heal people. Great answer. Devoid of the histrionics that characterized a younger Ezra Levant.
  23. So Harper has made up his mind pretty quickly on the new ambassador to the U.S. Turns out it will be Michael Wilson. Here's the story. Finally some good news for Harper. May not be the darling of the left, but at least he will improve relations with the U.S. and will energize the base of the CPC.
  24. The sad thing is Liberal supporters are defending Belinda with the same breathe in which they attack Emerson. Did Harper go about this incorrectly? Absolutely. Should the supporters of the CPC learn a thing or two from this ... absolutely. Overplaying the outrage at these events only plays into the Liberals hands. It gives credence to the argument that Conservatives don't know how to govern, yada yada. Harper will have to make many tough choices as PM. Will we be happy with all of them? Undoubtedly no. Does that mean he should be hammered over and over in the press by his own *supporters*? Hmmm, maybe you should decide if you prefer government to opposition before deciding that one.
