  1. I’m for smaller government and fewer government powers apart from defending the country from hostile foreign powers. Our old timey “conservatives”, much like our old “liberals” are no longer relevant categories in this new world of digital surveillance capitalism. The threats to liberal-democracy are so grave today that governments can imprison whole populations overnight to fight crises. Our Conservative Party may be just as useless as our Liberal Party before these very powerful totalitarian forces. Poilievre seems to understand the threat better than most politicians, but I’m not sure yet whether he would’ve taken us down the same path of draconian rules and government overreach as Trudeau’s Liberals. I’m hoping and betting that he wouldn’t. As for the US Republicans, they’re also somewhat divided like our Conservatives. Though I thought Trump was a bit jingoistic and too nationalistic, I see now that ideologically the populist Republicans that he led were more tuned into what’s under threat than the old timey Republicans like Liz Cheney, who is basically the old neo-con/neo-liberal politics of B. Clinton and George W. I liked B. Clinton more than W, but I think both leaders would’ve struggled to maintain the American way of life during the pandemic and in future “crises”. Perhaps W would fare better. Hard to say. I trust Ron DeSantis over Biden by far to navigate today’s world.
  2. Yes you know. Interesting, I was looking for that speech by that Romanian Canadian woman in BC during the protests among the 240 page history on here of the seminal moment in our history since WW2 and especially WW1. Not even the referenda over Quebec separatism were as significant as the Freedom Convoy. Most of the videos were deleted because of Canada’s crackdown. It made me think of Google’s censorship in China and reminded me how fragile democracy really is. The irony about all these posts where people think I’m being reactionary or Trumpian or whatever is that, as you know, I’ve done the social justice thing more than most of the lefties on here. I was a bit of an environmental activist and I drew up the first maps and proposals for the GTA Greenbelt. I read a lot of left leaning stuff like Weiss’s Substack, but I know totalitarianism when I see it.
  3. You clearly didn’t hear the passionate speeches and commentary from Romanian-Canadians during the protests.
  4. What are you talking about? Their perspective was backed by government and media.
  5. A constitutionally protected right shouldn’t get violated and access to one’s own property and job license shouldn’t get taken away because someone decides arbitrarily that a protest is illegal. On what basis? People protest on streets and certainly at their parliamentary grounds all the time. The border blockades were mostly removed and the honking had mostly stopped before the EA was declared. A deal was in the works to move trucks. We’re moving into a phase where government no longer has to answer the phone or table concerns to solve conflicts. Instead, government can declare the legal illegal and detain or beat people with impunity under the auspices of emergency measures Of course there was no emergency. Filling some streets with vehicles and protesting peacefully is not a crisis. Government skirted peacetime rule of law to remove opposition as though we were at war with terrorists. It was cowardly and divisive leadership that has alienated half the country. The vilification of the protesters was icing on the cake. In the Soviet era protesters were removed from the scene and dealt with out of sight. We saw it here. Ottawa looked and felt like Warsaw after a crackdown by the communists. Rule of law broken? If so it was by government more than anyone else. Don’t worry, many so called “journalists” like McQuaig of the Star piled on alongside Trudeau. Media supported the government abuse of power and won’t change their story now. Nothing to see here. Move along.
  6. Well we saw it with Milosevic, right? If a country’s leader is in command of the military and national police, then… I don’t think any international bodies would hunt down their biggest puppet fanboy anyway. Trudeau undermines Canadian sovereignty and empowers outside influences.
  7. Yeah they get upset when too many women are wearing jeans instead of Lululemon in the Starbucks lineup.
  8. Is Ottawa a city of elite sucks?
  9. If you’re not voting for Poilievre then he must be really good. Thanks.
  10. Who told you to abandon your prison guard post?
  11. I wrote a thesis on Solzhenitsyn and I have worked in Russia. Think about the climate of protests under the Soviet Union and in Eastern Block countries.
  12. Are you a communist?
  13. The Hague international criminal court may be suitable here. I’m sure Canada is a signatory, y’know being that it’s international…
  14. Well the Herbies of the world have been allowed into the control room and the adults have left. I hope Canadians start asking themselves, after several years of the lunatics running the asylum, whether they think Canada is a better place now. I’ve never seen such a rapid decline. I thought the early 90’s debt crisis and recession were bad. I thought the late 70’s were bad. What he have now is not just economic decline, but the deterioration of our social moral fabric, culture, and democratic rights on an unprecedented scale. Canada is becoming China with a woke-green activist face.
  15. Vice News is mostly on the left in its news coverage, but you’re so lost and ill-informed that you don’t understand why these crimes are happening. How could it have anything to do with perhaps the most lax drug policy in the developed world, right? Your mentality is exactly why BC cities are now unable to reel in violence and self-harm. You also won’t make the connection to the most permissive medically assisted suicide laws in the world, which is I’m sure what some of these lost people will be seeking. The rest of the world doesn’t have these reckless policies for good reasons, but of course the BC and Canadian political leaders know better. There’s no connection between these “progressive” drug policies and the opioid, fentanyl, and methamphetamine epidemic that has taken so many lives. How could there be, right? We went from Just say no policies, which I opposed at the time, to anything goes. You reap what you sow.
  16. Subramanya is a good journalist. Her articles have appeared on Beri Weiss’s Common Sense Substack. 20 years ago she would’ve been considered a really important voice by Canada’s MSM, but now our major newspapers have become mostly government mouthpieces, repeating government rhetoric unquestioningly. Trudeau’s government can basically do whatever it wants in this climate with impunity.
  17. Canada’s decline on full display in Vancouver, where hard drugs are free. I’m sure once the addictions multiply the Mexican drug cartels will be back on top and the killings will grow. The borders will be open of course, brought to you by the same left wing radicals who permitted all hard drugs in Vancouver.
  18. Oh there’s plenty of bills making all sorts of terrible ideas law. The government overreach in Canada is staggering. Wait until they’re done with the internet.
  19. At some point Canada became the most extreme example of all the dystopian experiments we used to mock in parts of Europe: the most permissive euthanasia, the most permissive hard drug tolerance, the most permissive abortion laws, the most permissive gender surgery laws, the making illegal and “against human rights” of anyone who questions these radical and reckless policies. Our compelled speech laws and banning of unpleasant protests are especially Orwellian. Canada is becoming a dystopia.
  20. Actually a lot of Blacks and other “non-Black racialized” people roll their eyes at the woke victim point scheme. Don’t think for a second that racial groups line up along political lines with Blacks always on the left. Far from it. It’s like the myth that all Blacks want to defund the police. That’s a lot of white liberal saviour BS.
  21. One flag meaning what, that Trudeau is acting like Hitler? You’re playing Trudeau’s manipulative game. Seize on the flag and say the protesters “are walking with the Nazis”. Pathetic
  22. Trudeau should resign over this. He was an incompetent leader, unable to bring the right tools to bring the temperature down. Instead of reaching out with empathy and meeting with protest leaders he insulted them, painted thousands of protesters with the extremist brush, hid, and brought in the maximum domestic emergency powers available. The claims against the protesters were exaggerated or outright lies. Charter rights were trounced. The whole mess is on the Liberal government. Freeland was no better. She revelled in the freezing of bank accounts, removal of licenses, and seizure of vehicles.
  23. The blockades were mostly cleared and the honking had mostly stopped when the EA was declared. You need to stop. I’m starting to think you’re a fake here on behalf of the Liberals.
