As I say, because the West was hugely poorer and more disaffected, whereas the East was far better off and far better armed. Stilicho as one of the best leaders the Romans ever had - 'leadership' tends to depend on more basic factors, like wealth. Basically, the plague of Diocletian did for both (60% death rate doesn't leave many to fight) but the east was hugely further forward economically.

Doctors and opioids, a troublesome connection.

Making health subject to private profit is a recipe for disaster, always and everywhere. -
U.S. political system as seen from abroad
Penderyn replied to JamesHackerMP's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Yes...but, there is something extremely sick about a country that produces so ignorant and spiteful a 46%. The Us has produced some very admirable people, but I think it's been burning up its 'soft power lately' like Russians meeting invaders with the 'scorched earth'. Sad! -
The book I'm reading points to the late classical little ice age and the Plague of Justinian as putting the kibosh on the whole set up. It reckons the plague killed off something like 60% of the population. I think those features would be enough to see off all but very strong societies like Byzantium, which limped on some shape.

The West had a far weaker economy and had been very disaffected for a very long time (Gallic Empire, various British breakaways etc etc, the Germans found it easier to break through in the West, and were already relatively civilized, Constantinople had enormously better defences, and by the time the Huns were driving everyone else westward, what, really. had Rome to offer the West any more except forced military service, having to do the same job as your father and pay very high taxes for no defence worth speaking o?. If I'd been back there I' have preferred Christianity and barbarism every time. Emperors were a costly hobby.

Does any part of the anthology called 'the' Bible mention our modern concept of homosexuality, rather than just behaviour we'd describe as such? I was trying earlier to suggest that anachronistic thinking is a good way to produce ludicrous behaviour.

'Bigot' is an eighteenth-century word I don't use much, but surely you'd have your work cut out to find any normal people in the rest of the world who didn't regard President Trump as an extreme-right nutter when he can get enough attention off his sacred Self to involve himelf in politics at all? -
No - clearly no killings were going on, but the people could talk and the evidence was extremely convincing as to what had happened. Numbers, as I said, were another matter. And blokes from my neck of the woods were not meek hearers of the word - they dislike Churchill and weren't into tory propaganda.

Over here, the first rule of military service is never to trust a member of the officer class to run a piss-up in a brewery - or anything, really, but to say 'Yes, Sir, No Sir, three bags full , Sir!' in a nice, polite way.

Male and female are not 'classes'. All workers should go all out to end unequal treatment, because the bully-class live by dividing their victims. Anyone so naïve as really to divide the world up by the chances of genitalia is senselessly superstitious and playing along with the real masters.

One from here just died for Kurdistan. On the general point (is it?) some women like fighting, as do some men. Most of both have more sense.

Millions of people of all sorts were murdered, especially Russian prisoners and Jews, the Nazis having trained on Socialists and Communists, and the Nazis were full of ill-conceived eugenicist bilge, like so many at the time. The problem is the total chaos at the end of the War, with vast numbers of hungry people wandering about after the liberation of the camps and the spread of disease made numbers almost impossible to calculate, which left people, in effect, to think of a number. It is this that makes the 'haulocaust' deniers able to get way with a bit of their nonsense - woolly estimates turned into 'facts' suit so many interests. I knew blokes who liberated the camps: you ask them if there were mass murders!

As most of us know, Britain did for Southern Rhodesia when she failed to bomb Beit Bridge and stop the Nazi regime set up there to prevent democracy, leaving it to a not-very admirable resistance. South Africa, like 'Israel' , was designed to demonstrate the long-term crappiness of racist occupation

They are in a heavy majority in their own country, where much oif the land is still held by colonialists who are heavily into this 'race' nonsense. Perhaps they want their country back. I would.

The World Has Lost One Of It's Greatest Minds
Penderyn replied to AngusThermopyle's topic in Health, Science and Technology
The most encouraging thing about the whole story is that she got herself decent bloke in the finish, whereas he had to keep quiet about what happened with her replacement. Give me 'Arts' for human beings, such as they are, and let the 'Great Minds' have space and self-conscious science. -
Some of my relatives went to Chubut and then to Canada, and some of them speak three languages still, whereas any who went to the 'States were quickly lost in the money-mad mass. If any went to Russia its been kept from me, but as far as I can judge, Saskatchewan creates a very strong identity indeed, second only to staying home.

The God of sport is the same as the God of everything under capitalism - quick cash.

It's a terrible effort to do otherwise, and my family give every indication of wanting me around. It is interesting, too, to see how far the capitalist crooks can rob the mugs before they finally kick.

Sooner hell holes for the colonialist minority than for the native majority, but sensible people are not convinced by racist assertion you know.
-
Try reading someone - Koestler, for instance - who knows something about the matter, and stop quacking your ludicrous Nazi drivel.

Thucicides said something like it, but not very. Who said Zionists were Jews? Nazi are Nazis everywhere, whatever their ludicrous racist excuses for capitalist colonialism.
