Unless of course it's Trump who has fooled you once, twice, thrice or more. Then it's "everyone else is lying." Bitter and unforgiving people lead pretty miserable lives, whether they're Christian or not, and they often don't even know why.

Every time you applied for a job, your name and your skin color beat out someone with a foreign-sounding name and dark skin, even when your qualifications were identical. When you, with your white skin, walk into a place of business, the service you receive is generally faster, more congenial and sometimes economically advantageous than service received by someone with darker skin. If you want to see this in action from the other side, walk into certain stores in Richmond and notice how the sales people glance at you, and then ignore you. Sure, you can shop there and they'll take your money, but it's pretty clear - without a word being said - that you are not the customer they want. Most white people in Western countries don't experience these subtle clues in their daily life; most people of color do. "Privilege" is often invisible to those receiving it. In other countries, the same kind of "privilege" is extended to their power class (not necessarily the majority), and their recipients are usually as oblivious to their privilege as you are. Just because you struggled doesn't mean you didn't benefit from being white in a country where the power holders are primarily white.

If your assumption is that you can't trust "liberal sources" and you consider CNN and CBC liberal sources, then its not surprising that you'd think Fox News "lies less." Doesn't mean anything except that you assume Fox isn't lying if what they report contradicts what other sources report. Now I've no real opinion on how much or how little Fox News "lies"; they seem to prmarily report whatever Trump says or does in the most positive light. It may not be lying, but I wouldn't call it reliable news source either. All politicians lie, prevaricate, change their stories, hide or downplay relevant facts. You lambaste every other politician for doing this, while supporting and excusing Trump for every lie that comes out of his mouth. You aren't the only one, of course; almost everyone has bias that affects their critical thinking to some degree. But it's only fanatics (religious, political, anti-science, etc) that completely abandon critical thinking in the way that Trumpsters have. Makes me wonder what positive role fanatics play or have played in human society. There must be something, else why would they exist?

Nobody cares when it's prisoners in solitary confinement becoming (even more) mentally ill, or if its disadvantaged/handicapped people who are confined to home for health or economic reasons. Only now that it's affected "elites" is there concern expressed. But given that even governments in the hardest hit countries are already starting to open things back up and BC (at least) is talking about mid-May, its hard to understand your complaint that a lockdown will last too long.

As we learn more, gov policy can be fine tuned. Acting too soon to open businesses/schools etc on incorrect info would be just as harmful as keeping things closed too long based on incorrect info. Government is warranted making decisions based on what they see and know now because basing policy on unproven claims about the virus's contagion or death rate, either way, could lead to worse disaster.
-
In future, sure. Today, next week ... not so much. As yet there is no certainty on these claims, the world is still learning about this virus. Caution is warranted. I hope the infection rate is low, but I'm not willing to risk my life, or my kids' lives on incomplete data. YMMV.
-
Yeah, as if the (as yet unproven) 'mortality rate' was the least bit relevant to the situation we currently find ourselves in.
-
Whether that's true or not is still up in the air: the infection rate may well be higher than we think because so many people are asymptomatic. On the other hand, if it's just those people haven't yet got sick, then what? The virus is still not well enough understood to make any absolute claims, such as you've tried to make here. There's just not enough evidence either way and so I support more caution rather than less. In the meantime, the facts demonstrate that there is enough infection, enough serious illness and enough deaths that health systems are overwhelmed in a way that does not happen with influenza. As long as that's true, the actual death rate is irrelevant, don't you think? Arguing that its "no worse than the flu" because we don't know the actual infection rate against daily reports demonstrating that hospitals around the world have been completely overwhelmed just doesn't work. If, ultimately, the infection rate is the same as, or less than the flu than the Covid virus will settle into a regular part of our life - as flu has. But right now, that's not the situation; right now, we've been hit by a virus for which we have no immunity and right now, the victims are overwhelming health services (not so much in Canada, thank goodness, but elsewhere in the world).

You would think, but history suggests otherwise.

What? You don't remember the refrigerator trucks used to house the dead/mass graves in New York last year or the year before or the year before that? You missed the stories of seniors homes being abandoned by caretakers, and seniors left dying in their bed? And every year, the mass mobilization of retired health care workers to help deal with the influx of sick people to hospital ? Honestly, Eyeball, you just need to pay more attention to the news! I'm sure with just a little effort, Rue or Shady or OftenWrong or someone can show you what you missed. /s

Children being raped 'deserve' it? Innocent people being forced from their homes, killed en mass for land, or resources or just because they believe in God differently 'deserve' it? Why do they deserve it, exactly? What makes God blameless in any evil visited on humans, but deserving of all praise for whatever good humans experience? How can an all-powerful, loving God demand extreme suffering and pain as proof of 'devotion' and not lift a finger to protect 'innocents' for thousands of years and still be considered just or loving?
-
How is he "just", exactly? Killing innocent people is never just, yet God encouraged the killing of innocents throughout the OT. Even if he's not actively encouraging it, he allows it all the time - as demonstrated by certain elements of Islam today. If God was just, he'd punish the evildoers and not allow his own innocent people to suffer as proof of their 'faith'. Clearly, God is either extremely unjust, or he is too weak and ineffectual to protect those who worship him, and so must pretend that these things are a 'test of faith'. Nobody victim-blames like God!
-
I don't think you are quite getting it. The pronouncements of God are only irrelevant to those who don't believe. For those who do believe, God (in whatever form he's imagined) provided rules for all humans, not just the ones who believe in him. Consequently, if God said "no sex with men" or "don't be an adulterer" or "don't covet your neighbors cattle", that applies to all humans - believers or not. People who believe in God, therefore, also believe that they are righteous in disapproving of that which God disapproves. There are also scriptures in the Bible (dunno about the Koran) directing believers to make sure everyone has been notified of God's disapproval, so no - they can't really ignore what non-believers are doing.

Would they have done so without the Covid pandemic? Precious to this, one might have thought Ford considers health care an unnecessary expense: "Doug Ford announced that he will delay public health cuts by one year, but severe cuts amounting to almost one-third of provincial funding for public health are still planned to go forward next year if we don’t stop them. These cuts threaten vital local services including food and water safety, infectious disease tracking and prevention, immunizations, prenatal training and safety, overdose prevention, safe needle and biohazard programs and many others."

Trump Vs Trudeau on Coronavirus
dialamah replied to WestCanMan's topic in Canada / United States Relations
His actions (denial for weeks) and lack of action (ignoring memos sent to him in January regarding this virus) made the covid-19 situation in the States worse. Those who deny that are deranged and grasping for straws. -

No pulse or blood pressure, among others. Doctor dies after taking hcq. Also, might be toxic for diabetes patients. -

Nobody has to wear a mask, other than medical professionals working directly with Covid patients. People can if they want to; maybe it'll help and maybe it won't.
