  1. Canadian United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour today asked the UK to walk that fine line between fighting violence and respecting human rights. I think these words are crucial, and I hope that our government authorities in Canada are listening. Arbour stated that the London bombings were terrible acts of violence, but also expressed concern for people's human rights, such as Jean Charles de Menezes, the Brazilian electrician who was accidently killed by the British bobbies last week. No one said it was going to be easy.
  2. Contrary to what we have been programmed by our MSM we have an abundance of all the material things we need in Canada. I actually think we should have a guaranteed minimum for all our citizens in terms of food, clothing, shelter, health & dental care, and education, the basic necessities in life. After that you are on your own to decide whether you want a second home, a second car, etc. All this government energy which means taxes, spent on trying to investigate people whether or not they are eligible for EI, social assistance etc., is a huge waste of money. Yes some people, a few, will rip off the system. So what? Let's use our government tax dollars in more productive ways such as encouraging R & D so we can seriously address global warming, health care research, mining without polluting, agricultural improvements, saving our oceans, etc. Our tax system could use a major overhaul as well, to lose all these loopholes, resulting in reducing government bureaucracy.
  3. Answers 1 wrong 2 yes 3 no 4 no 5 wrong, as not suggesting it for the luxuries in life
  4. If people want to travel to the USA to pay for some medical procedure that's up to them, just don't ask canadian taxpayers to help foot the bill. Everyone should be able to access their costs to the health care system on the 'net so at least we know how money money we are individually costing the system. I understand Alberta sends out an annual staement to everyone showing how much each Albertan cost the system. Yes, that is my preference to abolish private schools, because the major problem in our society is tolerance for others. Private schools bred differences which ultimately lead to intolerance IMO. I don't think that people should be allowed to get away from people who are intellectually or physically challenged which is one of the main reasons for private schools existence.
  5. I see exactly what you're saying. PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO MAKE CHOICES! You're absolutely right....... or perhaps a little too far left of it... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You want choices for the rich not the middle class and the poor. No matter how much you want 2 tier health care in Canada, I don't see it happening as the vast, vast majority of Canadians want a single tier publically funded health care system.
  6. I suppose there are two schools of thought around business ventures. Screw your employees or treat them as you would want to be treated yourself. The head of Costco makes 10% of the inappropriate average CEO wages, because he is not obsessed by greed. I remember last Christmas one of the most hated companies in Vancouver - Impark had an amnesty for parking ticket violators because their corporate image was so bad. They remind me a lot of Wal-Mart. How Costco Became the Anti-Wal-Mart
  7. So now there are two national flags flying on Hans Island. Maybe Canada and Denmark could share the island. We could even have a multi-lingual school there. Danish, English, French, and Inuit. Denmark protests visit to Hans rock
  8. Of course it was descrimination based on the colour of their brown skin. Yes, terrorism is a very serious issue, but we have to stop deluding ourselves with denial when faced with facts. Otherwise we are going to have more incidents like that unfortunate situation in London last week where that Brazilian fellow got killed by the police.
  9. If you don't call this discrimination what do you call it? L.A. to London Flight Diverted to Boston
  10. Not all business people are smart or principled. Look at Costco which is the anti Wal-Mart. Costco pays its employees an average of $27. per hour, 42% higher than its closest rival. Costco will be around for a lot longer that Wal-Mart I predict.
  11. Yes the decision does make our supreme court look bad but I am sure it will be rectified by our politicians when they return to Ottawa in the Fall. Conservatives more than any other party has supported two tier health care which is the deathnail for the public system. All they are doing by this is acting as shrills for these US companies who hope to come in and take over Canada's system. Fortunately most Canadians see through the charade.
  12. CBC has learned who is not on the list: Garneau Hanson Erasmus Fontaine Manning Clark CBC has not learned who is on the list but that the decision is imminent. Jeez, I hope it is Rae. It will shut him up, at least politically.
  13. Canada, Denmark dispute ownership of tiny Arctic island Article Is this a tempest in a teapot or does it have major significance for Canada? I don't think we should go around creating problems where there are none.
  14. Times have changed quite a bit, that's for sure. Probably for the better too. Now people don't have to suffer second hand smoke and the resulting proven negative health consequences. If that's fascism then I guess I'm a fascist.
  15. Actually studies I have seen explained that it is almost entirely social conditioning. Girls do better than boys in the sciences up until the age when it is no longer the "in" thing. Boys and gilrs are conditioned very differently from birth.
  16. Governments by their very nature make decisions on behalf of their citizens. We can be lucky that we live in democracies where we do have a few options like signing up to go, or not to go to war, etc., as opposed to dictatorships where you don't have a choice.
  17. I don't understand what you are saying above. One thing about Canadians, and it may have something to do with living next to the elephant, is that we root for the underdog a lot of time. Perhaps that is one of the reasons redistribution to protect the less fortunate is so important to us. I also see it as good principled living to share what one has with others. I believe there is enough research to show that if you leave too much to your offspring you can damage them. And you can't take it with you, can you? So in a sense government intervention is doing your a favour. Consider it tough love.
  18. Conservatives have also made a huge blunder attacking Canada's health care system which is something of a religion for Canadians. Yes it has some problems that all Canadians seem to aware of, but these issued are being addressed. The article below on Toyota explaining their decision to locate in Canada is an interesting read because it explains how business people usually will make decisions which are in the best interests of the company they represent. What is fascinating about it is that the reasons are because of Canada's fabulous social services, primarily health care and education. And one of reasons for Toyota's success is because they think long term. Paul Krugman: Why jobs head north
  19. So what is progress? Is it forcing socialist ideals on people? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Why do you spite out the word socialist like it is some dirty word in Canada? Sorry to disappoint you but we live in a social democratic society here, where some folks are more socialist than others. I think having a good balance is key to Canada's success.
  20. Conservatives may not appreciate hearing this right now however Joe Clark was right. The merger of the Reform and the PCs, or more specifically the takeover of the PCs by the Refrom (read Harper and his cronies) was a huge mistake, and the Conservatives appear to be heading over the edge of the cliff.
  21. I don't think we should get into maligning rural nor Calgarian inhabitants. What is the point in that? We all share this country together and a majority is only as good as how it treats its minorities, whatever our minorities happen to be.
  22. Poll: Liberals stop bleeding in Quebec L-39 C-24 N-19 Conservatives have not been this low in the polls since before the last election.
  23. A columnist draws an interestingly analogy between PM Martin and President Bush. How either of these guys can suggest they relate to the average working person in our respective countries is hilarous. I suppoese this is the result when you get a media who is comprised of more fantasy than reality. If Bush is a moron, what's Martin?
  24. Eric Margolis, a security expert, stated in an interview that if Canadians (read Hillier's comments) are going to go to Afgan and kill afgans, Afgans are going to come and kill us. Maybe Canada needs to have a national debate on what the hell we are doing in Afghanastan before we bring an attack down on ourselves. This war on terror is seriously deteriorating as you can see from the following article which states that bin Laden and his advisers are very much in control and are probably responsible for both the Egypt and UK bombings. Al Qaeda Leaders Seen in Control
  25. The American approach has totally failed. There is a lot more terrorism in the world than there ever was before. And now people want Canada to buy into into that insality. I say, as a Canadian no thanks. Some people don't understand that you have to get to root of the problem, not the superficial American solutions that don't work. Fortunately enough Canadians are educated now to think for themselves and realize what is going on here. It is all about oil. And the US has drastically failed. Even Americans have woken up to that fact.
