Two weeks ago today Londoners were attacked by 4 bombs in their public transportation system. Today their public transportation system was attacked again. It is time for the UK to pull out of Iraq: British Police Evacuate 3 Subway Stations After Explosions

Time is fast running out for the hourglass figure I just knew we were eating too many potato chips and drinking too many cokes.

So, if we have contributed to its growth, what can we do to contribute to reducing it? Well for one thing, although it has nothing to do with Canada, we could encourage the Coalition of the Willing, what an absurd name, to pull out of Iraq which is on the verge of civil war anyways. Secondly perhaps Canada should consider pulling out of Afghanastan. What are we doing there? Thirdly we need to make the effort to get to know the Muslim people in our respective communities, and learn what it takes to be friends with them. Fourth we need to ensure there really is equal opportunity for everyone in Canada, including Muslims. Fifth we need to listen more to people like Livingstone who know better than most what is causing the attacks.

Osama bin Laden's 'ambassador' faces deportation after deal So do you think this guy should be deported? I'm afraid I am going to have to side with Amnesty International on this one and say no. Part of my reasoning is based on what happened to Canadian Mahar Arar when he was deported to Syria.

Canada needs to rebuild its railway system
mirror replied to mirror's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
You don't get it. When a truck has an accident it is not a little car having an accident. Think of that recent ferry incident at Horseshoe Bay compared to a motor boat having an accident, which is a good analogy. Of course truck drivers are better drivers than people in automobiles as they have to be. That is their occupation and their loads are much more dangerous. And don't give me that crap about all trucks being safe. Some are, usually the ones that drivers themselves do the maintenance on, because it is their own lives that are at stake. I would surmise that most trucks on the road are not safe, to either the car driving public, or the drivers themselves. But of couse you don't want any taxes to pay for safety enforcement. You see what lowering taxes results in, don't you! Commuters driving on the roads are scared to death of these big trucks. Is that any way to to treat people just trying to get to work in the morning? -
Global warming doesn't exist, does it?

Well we'll see when we have more floods, hurricanes, killer heat waves over the next few years if you don't change your mind. -
That is the most ridiculous analogy I have ever seen here at mapleleafweb: What Livingstone did say however is this:

Except when cars have an accident they don't usually take out bridges in the process: Pedestrian bridge collapses in B.C. -

Interesting how the other G8 countries are leaving the US behind once again this time to do with climate change. Oh well, sooner or later the US will clue in to what is going on, but in the meantime the US is going to be left further and further behind in dealing with global warming. Maybe we really are witnessing the beginning of the Decline of the American Empire: Climate Change: Tipping Point -
Sounds reasonable and probaly in the ball park to me. Pakistan seems to be a real hotbed for these suckers. I wonder what kind of effect this is going to have on Musharif's ability to govern his country. My guess is that they have narrowed bin Laden's location down to some area in Afaghanstan near the Pakistan border. I wonder if that is where our 2,000 additional Canadian troops are going to be deployed. It might not be a good idea if one's own country's troops captured bin Laden. Imagine the temptation for his followers to retaliate.

EI is insurance - hopefully you need need to use it. I do agree though that the premiums should be lowered if our unemployment rate stays low. Liberal-NDP budget amendment becomes law

It was a TYPO. The dates are actually July 4-8 and NOT Jun 4-8. -
Ottawa is by far the best city to bicycle in, in Canada, and you can skate to work in the Winter. Can you get snow tires for a bike? Now that I live in an area that is 99% snow free, I don't think to inquire about such things. Interestingly enough, following the London tube attacks, bicycle sales have skyrocketed in London. We really do need to give a serious push to our city planners to accommodate this mode of pollution free transportation. Skating in the Winter, and kayaking are other healthy methods to travel as well. I have heard that those who drive to work are 5-10 pounds heavier than those who use other methods of transportation.

Calgary, Canada's Fastest Growing City

Most lumber harvested in Canada is processed in Canada. For a while, large companies with American divisions like Canfor or Weyerhaeuser skirted the softwood lumber tariffs by shipping "unmanufactured" lumber down south to their mills there. Even then, unmanufactured meant rough (unplaned) dimensional lumber (2x4, etc) and not raw logs. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well I remeber when I moved out West and checked into purchasing a chesterfield, sofa, couch, whatever you call it. It seemed they were all built in SW Ontario. I thought that to be rather strange and wondered why we can't build sofa's in the West. Maybe when transportation costs are out of sight, $100. Oil, more things will get built closer to home. -

Solar power, wind power, hydro electric power, nuclear power are a few alternatives when we run out of oil and gas. Let's forget about coal as it pollutes too much. Of couse we could always go back to canoes. -

Isn't that true only up to a point? Doesn't Canada get any economic Brownie points for having such an abundance of raw materials? Seeing as we have all these raw resources on owr soil anyway, are we not better off processing it as much as possible? I'm thinking of for example our logging industry, where it seems we are shipping these raw logs overseas. And I agree with you about Calgary. My brother lived near Market Mall (NW) and for years I used to visit him often. -

That is strange, and good that you spotted that, however it appears that it is a typo: Pollara poll suggests solid Liberal lead -

Just what we need going down Granville Street at 5 AM! I have heard about those road trains but never ever seen a pic of them so thanks. I understand they are used in certain isolated, or low traffic roads that run down the middle of the continent or something like that. Never saw them when I was there although I spent most of my time on the Gold Coast. -

I agree with you that we need to support purchasing Canadian made goods as much as possible. As far as the new Toyota plant my understanding is that the CAW are going to attempt to unionize it. I would surmise that someone sweeping the floor for $30. an hour is probably doing that for a small portion of their working day, when they are not busy doing something else. How long does it take for someone to be considered skilled? -

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't value added referring to manufacturing or processing jobs as opposed to the jobs that are involved with the raw exportation of resources? My understanding was/is that there are a lot more jobs involved in the value added approach to selling our resources as opposed to shipping them out unprocessed. Maybe a 5 to 1 ratio at least. That is why I like what Jim Dinning had to say and I thought the CAW economist was saying basically the same thing. -
I think you are living in the past. My understanding is that Canada's employment rate has dropped to somewhere close to 6% the lowest it has been for 30 years, so to suggest there are a whole lot of people ripping off the EI system is nonsense. If you have proof that someone is abusing the system such as some on WCB who is able to work and you have seen the person working, get out your video camera, tape the person working, and send it on to WCB with the details. They will investigate. I am getting really tired of you dumping on poor people. Go after the corporate executive crooks if you are so concerned. There certainly are lots of them. The ex president of World Com created what was it, a $30 billion dollar fraud. All the unemployeed people in Canada could not create that much fraud in their entire lifetime.

Here is another article concerning value-added products from a well known Canadian economist. it seems that in some ways he is saying the same things as Dinning. Am I incorrect?: The Canadian disease? -
Fat attack I think this guy is on the right tack here. Get serious people you need to lose some weight. It is better for your own personal longevity and puts less stress on our our overburdened health care system. Anyway it's summertime so time to get off the couch. NHL hockey will be here soon enough. P)S to kimmy - you rock!

Tales from boom town Ottawa politicians had better get their act together if they have any hope of keeping a handle on Canadian unity. The West has been ignored for long enough in the Eastern corridors of power in this country, and there is no way this kind of situation can continue. Ontario needs to wake up and smell the oil fumes. I really like Dinning's approach. Too bad we don't have national leaders saying the same thing about all of Canada.
