Another Privatization Failure in Canada
mirror replied to mirror's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Five breakdowns this week on B.C. Ferries There is no question there is something fundamentally wrong with the management of BC Ferries. We need a public inquiry as for a lot of people in BC this is like having your highway shut down. -
Politicians shadow-boxing on free-trade pact It is very bizarre, to say the least, for the Conservative leader to not want to return to the House of Commons as soon as possible. I know he is down in the polls but it is almost like he is abdicating his role of official opposition leader.

Anyway it looks like it is boiling down to the two following choices: What to vote for : Torture lite or T. Rex in Eden?

Hurricane raises fears of global energy crisis Now the serious ramifications begin in the aftermath of Katrina. Things should be all right in the West. Ontario & Quebec I'm not so sure about.

I wonder if the beleagured city of New Orleans will ever be rebuilt in its present location. I have heard estimates of $55 billion in costs to do it. Does it make sense to rebuild in such a precarious hurricane area, and below sea level? And we are bound to get hit with more and more severe storms as a result of global warming. They might want to consider rebuilding somewhere else that is safer. Good article about the NO geography: New Orleans: Loss of wetlands opens floodgates to disaster I wonder if Vancouver will someday face the same type of crisis as NO is experiencing right now. I have heard that if the Fraser River overflows its banks which it has in the past Richmond could be flooded. Too bad money is so delusional that it thinks it can outfox nature. We ignore the scientists at our peril.

Perhaps you are suggesting that the Conservatives are going to try and buy the next election. I doubt the Liberals are broke - they just had a couple of fund-raisers last week, and don't forget the new electoral law that pays, what is it, $1.75 per person per year to the respective political parties based on the number of votes they received in the last election. Intersting though, as for once, the New Democrats are going to go into an election campaign financially well healed. It should make some kind of a difference if the New Democrats can spend on an equal footing as the other parties.
-
The Layton New Democrats have already called for an investigation into the oil companies for price-fixing. Now if the Cons and the Bloc will climb on board we'll have enough votes for an inquiry. There are already rumours of a massive class-action suit being launched so keep your gas receipts just in case.

Check out the gas pump prices here. I think it's in Calgary: Link

Another election forecasting site predicting another Liberal minority government; Link Liberal - 122 seats Conservative - 95 seats NDP - 31 seats Bloc - 59 seats Ind (Parrish) - 1 seat Total - 308 seats Not a bad forecast however I'm not sure the Conservatives have as much strength as what's being forecast here after their disasterous Spring and Summer. I would put the Conservatives more in the 75 seat range, at least at the moment.

World shows compassion for victims of Katrina Even those Venezuelans, scumbags according to Pat Robertson, are offering to help.
-
So the devastation in New Orleans actually is Bush's fault because he took the money for the levees and used it to go to war in Iraq. How tragic for his own people in the deep South.

Please stop spewing garbage here, eh! If you are going to make these kind of sicko accusations back them up with links which you obviously left out as they don't exist. The Guardian newpaper is one the English speaking most credible international publications.

Global warming doesn't exist, does it?

Another day another Toronto killing. Have the police caught any of these people? Perhaps one or two. Man shot dead outside townhouse complex -
No Quick Fix for Gulf Oil Operations There certainly does not appear to be any light at the end of the tunnel at least in the forseeable future. In hindsight it seems not that wise to have located all those refineries in a known hurricane prone area. Why don't they relocate those refineries elsewhere?

Canada is so fortunate and yet people still complain. What is the matter with us anyways? Isn't it about time we came to our senses and started helping those less fortunate? Link

This is the most catastrophic destruction ever experienced on US soil. Some people have blamed this storm on global warming, but I think God is upset with the US, and this is her way of showing Pat Robertson that he should never have made those comments about killing Chavez.

Pat Robertson Calls For Chavez To Die
mirror replied to mirror's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
MB Do you know the "That 70s Show"? I think you fit the bill for the father's favourite comment to describe his son and his son's friends. The difference is that you actually believe Chavez should be killed and the author of the following article is appalled by the idea. Quite honestly you sound like you have more than one screw loose. Seriously you might want to consider some psychological counseling. Robertson neglected first rule in planning a murder -- don’t tell -
I always have to laugh when I hear our poor downtrodden Quebecers complain about Canada and say they want to join the US. What kind of fantasy world do Quebecers live in anyways? France and chicken, somehow it just goes together” - SUBWAY

Yes, the CBC has banned the use of the word terrorist just like President Bush has.
-
This is unbelievable. Looting is taking place in full view of the Louisiana State Guard and the New Orleans police however it is quite conceivable that a lot of the looting is just people in survival mode. I suppose they have higher priorities such as saving lives, and dealing with the flooding. Everyone has to leave New Orleans and even the Superdome is going to be evacuated as the water levels are still rising.

Conservatives Set Up Crime Commission
mirror replied to mirror's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I guess you'll have to put me down as a bleeding heart because we can't just keep on building more prisons to house misfits in our society. I agree that the only long term solution is to initiate a prevention program but habits wil have to be changed to stop glorifying our culture of violence especially on TV. Maybe we need to shut down all commercial TV, and let the CBC do its thing everywhere. There are no easy answers here but it does sound like we have a very serious problem on our hands. Gun laws tough enough, minister says
