  1. I just don't know where to start with this one. My first thought is that Quebec is definitely a distinct society. My second thought is that I hope there wasn't football in those games. The butt slapping would have just gotton right rude. And the poor centers. OMG! I just can't picture the carnage!! And forget the 'pole vaulting.'
  2. I think minimum wage should split when it gets too high, just like shares. For $9, I get a new Canadian employee. For $10, I should get him and his brother too.
  3. See, and that seems like the whole reason the Isrealie thing isn't getting resolved. Just about the time that a peace negotiation seems to be working, the Pals send in another 16 year old girl or similar to start the cycle of suicide bombing all over again. I personally can't understand the hatred the Pals harbor. I do not have much respect for the Palestinian cause any more though because of it and I'm not a particular Jew lover either. Isreal does seem to want to offer a peaceful democratic solution and isn't getting a partner out of the deal. If I had the answer, I guess I'd be famous and maybe rich. I don't.
  4. "Well, then it's time to break from politics and just go in and kill them all. Reset.... Ask each and every Iraqi: Are you with us or against us? Wrong answer? Pop." Whoops, sorry about this comment. I don't really feel this is a serious comment to be debated. However, after a couple sasparillas on a Saturday night, it sounded good to me.
  5. But is this what actually happened? I think it's pretty obvious that what happened is that while US soldiers where capturing ground, the US government was creating a situation that encouraged Jihadists to fill a void. In a battle for hearts and minds, possession of real estate is not an issue. Bush saw this as a battle for real estate, while it was a battle of ideas. Unfortunately, he so far hasn't even won the battle for real estate. The battle for hearts and minds is already lost to him. Well, then it's time to break from politics and just go in and kill them all. Reset.... Ask each and every Iraqi: Are you with us or against us? Wrong answer? Pop.
  6. That will be told in the future. I believe in GWB and will go down swinging believing in him. I have never been a bandwagon type of guy. He did the tough stuff and the typical public couldn't stay with it for the long haul. That's exactly what AlQuaida predicted. This terrorist crap isn't over yet. The worst thing that could ever happen to North America is for the Democrats to get a president in for the next term. I believe if they do, they'll cut and run out of Iraq. Bad, bad, bad.
  7. I thought Jimmy Carter was a putz. All I can remember about him was his brilliant attempt at rescueing the hostages in Iran. Eechh..... Gerald Ford? I can't remember anything about him but his name. I honestly don't know if he did anything at all. I have always liked GWB since his Texas governor days. I wish they'd bring back the rope in Canada for a bunch that desperately need it. GW epitomises my opinion of Americans; Right or wrong, they'll do SOMETHING. History will judge George. I suspect the future will make us look back and say he was right about a lot of things.
  8. I'm just glad they don't allow knives here....phew.
  9. Canadian Blue....very interesting name. Two different beers made by two competing beer companies that somehow wind up tasting the same. Hmm....interesting.. Ok, never mind me, back to the thread...
  10. BD, this hurts me to say this, but I agree with you 100%. I believe it's the most Canadian thing you've said so far. As far as the white poppies go, it's a non starter with me. I couldn't give a hoot what someone wants to sell. It's a free country. I'll be wearing a red poppy myself, thank you very much.
  11. It's 'entertainment', people. Fiction. I personally can't wait to see it. I've heard it was extremely funny. Mind you, I thought the part in Pulp Fiction where they drove over a bump and accidently blew that guys head off was HILARIOUS!!!! It's all in the presentation.
  12. Go military!! May the government give you the tools and support you need to do your jobs. Come home safely!!
  13. Iraqis would have been better off if someone had tossed a grenade into that spider hole. Trials of men like Hussein are always a farce because their guilt is obvious to everyone. If Saddam got off it would have been because of a technicality - not because he is innocent. I believe that the trial was to lend credibility to the Iraqi legal system. If Saddam was found innocent, they could merely try him for the next one of countless atrocities he's comitted until they get their verdict. Killing him quickly at the beginning doesn't get any political mileage.
  14. Because it's a death sentence, the case goes to a higher court where the proceedings are checked by a different panel of judges for legalities. I'm not sure if litigation is allowed there. After the sessions are complete and assuming the judgement stands, he can be hung within 30 days. That's the way I understood it when explained on CNN.
  15. Yeah, we do stuff like that. I went to an employment standards seminar a few years ago and they kept stressing to us that a happy employee is a productive employee. The problem with younger people as far as employment goes is that they always need to balance their work time with their social time. If the balance gets out of whack, so do they and you're liable to lose them. Younger people are also constantly evolving personally so they may grow out of your employment and go looking for a change.
  16. Saddam should be unsensationalized, reduced to a footnote on the 12th page of the news when he hangs. He's getting what he deserves. I also believe that although he may not be the main source of violence in Iraq any more, his death will be a strong political victory for the new government there. This just can't be a bad thing on any level.
  17. Well thanks then. Getting a compliment here? That was definitely a virginal experience. Actually I'm a 46 year old white man. Wife and myself run a small business which operates 24/7 and we have 7 full time employees. Employees are the absolute hardest part of running a business. With the boom in Alberta, employees are also hard to find or replace so we are constantly trying to think of ideas on how to make them happier so they'll stay. Our business is near an industrial park where the drilling companies pay $17-$22/hour for someone to sweep the shops. That's a hard act to follow.
  18. Are you talking to me? That last bit reminds me of a funny poster I saw years ago. "Go to work every day. Millions on welfare depend on you."
  19. I'll agree with that. And generally, older people are more stable and experienced. Actually, the demographic that seems most suited to work at my establishment are women in their mid 20's with no kids.
  20. I am an English speaking, white, natural Albertan, right wing Christian conservative, redneck, who calls an indian an indian and a chinaman a chinaman because that's what they are. I'm also not politically correct, and don't care.
  21. You're right. Most workers don't realize what it costs us to employ them. At the end of the day, the only thing that works is to keep employees happy that they're working at your business. It's an impossible feat to do for every person, but we keep trying.
  22. Argus, IMO it's a myth that you'll get a higher quality person by paying more. I've tried throwing money at employees to get more stability in my work force and it doesn't work. I think it's a sign of the times that the younger generation has a work ethic that sucks. For the most part they want stuff but don't want to work for it. August, I don't think cutting CPP and EI is a good thing either. Low wage earners don't pay much tax so that's not much of an issue. However, low paying jobs aren't normally very stable and people need the EI to fall back on, unless you're merely suggesting they go directly on welfare. The CPP is in big trouble in the future from what I hear and all wage earners should contribute. Don't forget that we as employers match the CPP deduction and pay 1.4 times the EI deduction in Alberta. I can hardly find employees as it is because right now anyone who wants to work in Alberta is working. With 3% unemployment, you may as well say 0%. Minimum wage should not be raised. I agree with the pyramid effect up the chain being very detrimental to business. There should be a low minimum wage with the onus on the worker to make him or herself worth more.
  23. I do not know about the rest of the country, but I need to pay my employees $13/hour just to keep them from going back to Mcdonalds. $10 probably doesn't cut it here around Edmonton.
  24. Looks to me that certain members want this forum to be a 'boys club' with invited guests only. I agree that manners should be used. However, every person here gets their point across in the way that they know how. If what you are implying is that all posters have to fit some kind of mold, such as a minimum education level or a certain age group or merely not having a sense of humor, then you will close out the majority of people who merely want to relax and discuss things as they see fit. I think it's getting rather snooty to tell people HOW they should post. Use your ignore button. That's what it's for. I personally think this board is too dry. IMHO the majority of posts are news snippets of no real debatable value. Many posters aren't interested in friendly debate but rather shooting down someone elses opinion at all cost. I don't think it's fair to call out the moderator and complain about him. It's his board. He owns it. End of story. My 2c.
  25. Yes I realize that, but the point is that they serve exactly the same function, for different reasons. Whether it's good or bad depends on how you spin it. The whole Mexican thing amuses me. On one hand the American economy depends on cheap illegals to function but on the other hand it's not politically correct to let them in. I guess that's why they're not going to build the wall all the way across.
