What happens next to the Conservative Party?
SpankyMcFarland replied to betsy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Sounds like the sort of riding he should have picked originally: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-pierre-poilievre-seat-damien-kurek/ -
Terre-Neuve et Quebec -Labrador
SpankyMcFarland replied to August1991's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
I’m just sending my feeble atheist prayers heavenwards that this hydro deal goes through. It will mean a transformed relationship between NL and Quebec as they work together on future projects. -
Poilievre's Loss in Carleton

So you wouldn’t even give Fanjoy 1% of the credit for his win? Please sah, just 1%. It ain’t much for a man loik yaself. -
Trump Carney: First Oval Meeting
SpankyMcFarland replied to August1991's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Of course not. I would support Canada’s PM in any foreign mission, esp. one as important as this. Of course, I hope for the best result possible for our country. -
Trump Carney: First Oval Meeting
SpankyMcFarland replied to August1991's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Of course I would support Poilievre if he was down there. When our PM is dealing with a dangerous foreign adversary who has threatened our sovereignty we have to play as one team. A Tory win wouldn’t have made much difference to my life other than maybe lowering my taxes over the longer term. Poilievre behaved like a normal Canadian politician in this election and accepted the result. -
Poilievre's Loss in Carleton

So if he’d been one of those candidates who popped up a few weeks ago, like my local Liberal who lost, he’d have won? In life, events are rarely caused by one thing. -

That’s right. It’s only a possibility. -

I support any PM of ours who has to deal with such a disgraceful person. -

That remains to be seen. We could be heading for a two party system nationally. The sharpest division, which one can see here every day, is between Tory and non-Tory. -

Not just the Trump effect. By all accounts his opponent worked like hell. -

The Tories did well esp. with two key groups - younger people and those around Toronto. I’d prefer a more PCesque style but those who say more of the same is the right answer have a strong case. -

I know every politician considers themselves leadership material but I don’t see an obvious successor waiting in the wings to replace PP. That last leadership contest was painfully long - they couldn’t go through that again. PP forced JTs resignation and the end of the carbon tax before running an impressive campaign in Trump’s shadow. Furthermore his defeat didn’t just happen. Fanjoy (my iPad wanted fanboy) worked relentlessly for two years to unseat him. Unlike many others, he wasn’t a Johnny come lately. -
There are two powerful constituencies that agree on the status quo: firstly, the patient rights movement that prizes individual liberty over safety and is by no means confined to Canada; secondly, us. We the people have made it clear to the politicians and bean counters that we want to spend scarce health care dollars elsewhere.

The Tories can take comfort in defeat. They got an impressive vote share, especially among younger voters, and did well in the 905. Trudeau out and Trump in proved too much for them. The big self-inflicted wound was the feud with Ford. I’d also have gone for a kinder, gentler image for Poilievre since he became leader. For the Liberals, this strange gamble on an outsider worked like a charm. It might be a model other jaded governments go for as the seconds run out. -
Final predictions thread for 2025 election?
SpankyMcFarland replied to CdnFox's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
If I were leader, on day one, as the man below says, I would insist on as safe a seat as possible given that I’m going to be campaigning across the country. -

Nobody knows if Canadian right-wingers, especially younger voters more exposed to social media, are going to undergo magafication over the next decade. In that case they’ll probably be looking for leaders to the right of Poilievre. My preference would be for content, and style as well, to be closer to the old PC party but perhaps that ship has sailed. Either way there’s no question there’s a serious debate among conservatives in this country about where to go next. Should they seek to attract voters who aren’t real conservatives at the risk of losing votes to the PPC or should they try to get more votes out of a growing base and hope the non-Tories split? https://torontosun.com/news/national/conservative-mp-jamil-jivani-unloads-on-doug-ford-couldnt-stay-out-of-our-business Just saw Scott Moe comparing us to the US. He’s missing the point. FPTP reduces the number of parties, not closeness to America. I don’t think Canada will have an ossified two party US-style system any time soon. The BQ aren’t going to disappear and parties are more fluid up here as they should be. The closer parallel is with the UK. The right may break up again. -

Poilievre was badly beaten in his own riding. It wasn’t that close. What a result. -

Something that seems to bother no other Canadian whatsoever: divide Ontario into halves by area along a meridian, north to south. ‘Southwestern’ Ontario lies entirely east of that line, including the so-called University of ‘Western’ Ontario. I know nearly everybody lives in that little dangly bit but still. -

Poilievre is still a long way behind in Carleton. -

Thank goodness that Poilievre, Carney and Singh all made reassuringly normal speeches confirming the election result. -
In multiseat PR, parties end up with a much closer seat count to their vote count than we do or the Brits do. And if parties are mature they form coalitions that last. Even worse, FPTP favours regional parties, often separatist ones like the BQ or SNP, over national parties like the NDP or Reform UK.

Kenney is trying to make out that the Ford-Poilievre thang is just about personalities but that’s hard to believe given the history of the party.
