Westcoast bridge - a coloured rainbow
WestCoastRunner replied to WestCoastRunner's topic in Sex and Gender Issues
You don't seem to understand that gay rights are not recognized all over the world. Gays are murdered for just being 'gay'. This parade seeks to draw attention to this. You may think that gays have attained equal rights but that is surely not the case. The sooner folks like you stand up for their rights the sooner equality will be achieved. Thank heavens you don't have a gay son or daughter. -

I'm not accusing you of anything. However you seem to attack this parade from all angles and I don't understand why. Do you see any benefit at all from this parade or would you rather it just go away? -

Yes indeed 700,000 people! That's an increase of at least 50,000 over last year. I'm sure some of your neighbours were there too!! And since when do politicians not appear at a gay parade. Except maybe rob ford. And why does it need to change to succeed. It's wildly successful. It's the fourth largest gay parade in the world. What is it that you are against? -
The blue jays played out here against the Mariners last weekend. They had a strong Canadian crowd cheering them on. Border time waits were 2 hours. They only won one game but all 3 games were close and very entertaining. They put on a good show for us living on the west coast and I'm sure they were appreciative of the Canadians in the stands.

I think he's too old and I think he should focus on his sons family. He's needed more in that capacity. -
Does the Sandra Bland story outrage you?
WestCoastRunner replied to Boges's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Given her background she knew what her rights were. I would like to know why no one checked on her for over 2 hours given her suicidal tendencies that were uncovered during the process of detaining her. And why the discrepancy in the questionnaires. We still don't know what went wrong during the detainment period leading up to this suicide. -
RU-486 Finally Available in Canada
WestCoastRunner replied to WestCoastRunner's topic in Sex and Gender Issues
We have no idea of precautionary tests or trials in Canada because of health Canada's secrecy. If you look to the states they are far more transparent, releasing tons of data that is available to the public. At one time health Canada was far more transparent but not anymore. -
RU-486 Finally Available in Canada

This would be difficult to achieve. First you need a prescription. Second. In order for this to work the pills need to be taken over a couple of days. -
thats pretty awesome. Not only did she beat the solo competitors she also beat the relay teams. And this isn't just ultra distance running. This is running on mountain trails, fast flowing rivers requiring tremendous amounts of strength and endurance. A woman hasn't ever won this in 15 years. Good for her!! She is an inspiration.

And you are participating in a thread that you didn't think was conducive to a discussion? Before you write off a thread that doesn't meet up to your standards of discussion you should hold off and see what takes place. If anything, your comments discourage posters from initiating threads which in my opinion are sadly lacking. -

So Hal. Over 700,000 watched the gay pride parade today. Who exactly is speaking out against these parades and who is being turned off? 700,00 is larger then the population of the city of Vancouver. Your neighbours were probably there. -

Another tragedy in all of this are the Cubs that were left behind. Jericho can only do so much to protect them. When Cecil was killed it may also be a death sentence for the Cubs. -
RU-486 Finally Available in Canada
WestCoastRunner replied to WestCoastRunner's topic in Sex and Gender Issues
The U.S. may have approved this long before Canada but it took President Clinton two terms to get it approved, no thanks to the anti-choice lobby on the part of the manufacturer and the delaying tactics used by the Republican majorities in both Congressional houses from 1994-2000. From what I can glean from the numerous articles I have read, there are a number of reasons why it wasn't approved in Canada until now. One is the population of Canada vs the large sums of money it takes to bring a new drug to market. There was also one death in the clinical trials in Canada, which also caused the clinical trials to come to an abrupt end, even though there was proved to be no connection between the drug and the death. Health Canada is also not transparent enough and operates in a cloak of secrecy, resulting in great difficulty in finding out why drugs are or are not approved. Also, I do believe that the Minister of Health is trying to distance the government from the approval of this drug: "The reality is the Minister of Health has an important role in the drug approval process. Health Canada is governed by the Food and Drugs Act and pursues its regulatory mandate under the Food and Drug Regulations. According to the Food and Drug Regulations, “No person shall sell or advertise a new drug unless the Minister has issued a notice of compliance to the manufacturer of the new drug in respect of the submission.” (Sec. C.08.002 of Food and Drug Regulations). In other words, the Minister had the final say on whether RU-486 could be sold or advertised in Canada. In a subsequent section of the same Act we read: “The Minister shall, after completing an examination of a new drug submission issue a notice of compliance; or notify the manufacturer that the submission or supplement does not comply.” (Sec. C.08.004) It doesn’t get much clearer; Minister Ambrose has the ultimate authority and responsibility on which drugs are sold in Canada." It is the Minister of Health's responsibility to push for drugs that enhance the health of Canadians and that would include the RU-486. -
You are right. I was incorrect. She penned a song based on her bfs experience at Woodstock. I apologize Hal!

Finally, the RU-486 pill is available to (some) women in Canada: "RU-486 has been approved in the United States since 2000 and in France since 1988, and it’s available in nearly 60 countries, including Australia, where no prescription is required. The drug’s cost in the U.S. is between $300 to $800, according to Planned Parenthood." Canada has finally approved it. What took so long? And it has been suggested that this has come at a bad time for the Conservatives: Health Canada's approval of Mifegymiso, a drug used to end pregnancies, may come at a tricky time for the Conservatives — just days ahead of their expected election call. The New Democrats and Liberals have made their pro-choice policies clear, with Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau in particular taking heat for promising all MPs in his causus will vote to maintain a woman's right to choose how to handle a pregnancy. NDP Leader Tom Mulcair maintains no MPs in his caucus are anti-abortion. With the NDP and Liberals officially opposed to setting legal limits on abortion, the Conservatives may be the only party susceptible to political pressure by groups that want limits imposed on the drug." A bit of a background on the pill: This pill will allow for termination of pregnancies up to a gestational age of 49 days. Canadian women will need to obtain a prescription from a doctor to purchase the combination drug. University of Toronto ethicist Kerry Bowman expects that will increase access to abortion for women who live in rural and remote places. "The hope is that with time it will enter into further out there areas. Maybe even midwives, even nurse clinicians. I don't know. I'm not saying that now, but over time." This is a much needed service for women in Canada.
