I guess that's what society gets for allowing kids to grow up watching Star Trek, a generation of hopeless dreamers. Highlighting Klingon or Romulan values and portraying the Federation as a bunch of flakey commies would have been more apropos.1 point

I think this quote is particularly apt. Public opinion/support is crucial to maintaining the legitimacy of any important public policy, immigration included. I'm not sure why self-styled "progressives" (or liberals, as they're often described in the U.S., where the term often has a different connotation than here in Canada) believe that immigration should be treated any differently. I suspect many of these people simply don't understand history, including the struggles of ordinary people to put in place and maintain public social security programs, like pensions and health care, to enhance and sustain their own stability. Most people are generally willing to pay relatively high taxes to support this system provided they have some assurance it will benefit them when they need it to. It's the foundation of the modern "social contract" that emerged in one form or another in all Western countries in the 20th century. Over the past few decades the social security systems in many Western countries have been diminished and many feel public resources have been redirected to serve other purposes, including the maintenance of permanent subsidy classes. Prominent economists, including Sir Paul Collier and the late Milton Friedman, among others, have noted that open or large-scale immigration undermines social solidarity and erodes the viability of welfare or social security policies. Maintaining strong borders is crucial to sustaining both wages and social supports. Friedman preferred open borders and was willing to sacrifice the welfare system. But, as he noted, a dual policy of open borders and maintaining strong social supports is irrational and unsustainable. Our political and economic elites scoff at these concerns because they're not greatly impacted by them. But ordinary voters aren't as cavalier. And they have a right to their say as long as our countries continue to function as democracies. Contrary to the prevailing liberal/progressive view, for most voters this is not about racism. It's about maintaining the decent working conditions and social safety nets many have worked long and hard to sustain. Voters will support politicians who reflect and/or share their concerns. It's common sense.1 point

The world's largest shipping company pulls out of Iran. The mullahs have to now export their oil (whose income pays the mercenary guards and basij) using donkeys and camels!!!! http://en.rfi.fr/20180707-french-shippping-firm-pulls-out-iran-over-trump-sanctions The regime is on its way out hopefully sooner than later and Iran and its nation will be liberated soon Thanks to Trump. The United States owns Iran nation that much at least as the nation may be in this mess because of US action in 1953 when they staged a coup to topple the elected government in Iran. Not to mention the actions by peanut brain president Carter who helped the rioters in 1979 to stage a successful coup against the Shah.1 point

So we now have confirmation from the reporter in question that Trudeau did indeed grope her, and that he did indeed display an incredible degree of arrogance by saying "If I had known you were reporting for a national paper, I never would have been so forward." At the time she was a reporter for the Crestview Valley Advance, a small community paper, but it was affiliated with the Vancouver Sun and National Post and reporting on the festival for all three. Apparently he was unaware of that when he groped her, and figured she was fair game. Think of what this says about the man's mindset. "If you're small and don't have a voice I can do what I want. But if you're powerful then I'll respect you." Some will say this was 18 years ago, and indeed it was. And if Trudeau were a normal man I would dismiss it as such. Although 28 is pushing it a bit in dismissing the incident as the foibles of youth. But Trudeau has built his entire rep as Mister Progressive as Mr. Sensitive, and above all else, as Mr. Feminist, the great respecter of women and women's rights and equality. An enthusiastic supporter of the metoo meme, and completely unforgiving towards this sort of thing from other men, even in the past. Kent Hehr lost his cabinet position because he had merely spoken rudely to women 10 years earlier. And we're supposed to accept that what he preaches is not what he needs to live by? By his own standards, the ones he proclaims and champions, Trudeau should resign. https://ottawacitizen.com/news/canada/woman-says-trudeau-apologized-day-after-encounter-at-b-c-music-festival-in-2000/wcm/f6a05e1d-4533-44fd-8df9-8c89fd3b132b1 point

When are they going to replay the Colombia-game? You know, Colombians have signed a petition to FIFA that the game must be replayed because they lost and that is not acceptable.1 point

I think we have to stop referring to them as "refugees" or "asylum-seekers". They have already received asylum in a safe third country, which is the United States. Therefore none of them have any right to be in Canada. Coming over the border illegally makes them all criminals. They are "illegal immigrants" or "illegal aliens" or just "illegals". They should all be rounded up and deported.1 point

As a retiree myself, who's not eligible to obtain these benefits when I turn 65 in the very near future and lose my already limited work benefits, I understand this sentiment. I believe that when he limited refugee health coverage, Harper noted that those covered by the program shouldn't have better taxpayer-funded benefits than are available to most seniors in this country. It's a matter of fairness, after all.1 point

It worked for Trump. Trump made immigration a topic to be dealt with and the people liked and heard what he said. This has nothing to do with racism or being anti immigrant but more to do with where and how our tax dollars are being spent or blown. It will no doubt cost the Canadian taxpayer's hundreds of millions of tax dollars every year for decades to come that Canadians cannot afford to see blown on all this legal and criminal illegal activity going on. It is a crime against Canadians when an illegal refugee or a legal refugee can get eye care and dental care at no cost to them while I have to pay for my glasses and dental care. There is definetly something wrong with this picture.1 point

I never liked Russia. They were brutal even to their own people sending millions to Siberia not to mention occupation of half of Europe for 50 years and military invasions against whoever tried to become independent. Not to mention more recent adventures like invasion of Afghanistan and Ukraine and bombardment of civilian tergets in Syria as recent as a few months ago in order to prop up murderous regime of Assad and their support for murderous regime of Iran. Russia has been under many dictatorships and I have met many Russians in my life and I find them not classy and very selfish and money oriented. Russia as oppose to USA has done much harm to the world. Their only industry are those related to military for killings and space for showing off but none else. Even in military hardware they are no match for western military like tanks and fighter jets. In summary I love USA and Canada and I hate Russia.1 point

This is simply not true. It is only likely that those born into advantage will sustain that advantage, but it is not guaranteed, just as it is not guaranteed that those born into disadvantageous circumstances can't succeed. It is only more likely they won't. At the end of the day, intelligence, hard work and merit can compensate for disadvantage just as sloth, stupidity and hubris can undermine those who are born into advantage.1 point

What makes it even more an insult to the indigenous is that the 60s scoop was 100‰ Canadian, there was no outside influence. Khadr's case was in an American run system, We had no choice in the matter. We are the five year old trying to stop big brother from burning ants with a magnifying glass, we just get brushed off.1 point

Here's one of the biggest yarn: ....and when the poor folks took him up on his generous offer (risking life and limb on a long journey to Canada).......he says what kinda translates to: OOOPS. That's not really true. Let me re-phrase that. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/aug/25/justin-trudeau-forced-to-backtrack-on-open-invitation-to-refugees http://www.cbc.ca/news/opinion/myth-refugees-canada-trudeau-1.4257696 I can understand that he's trying to copycat Trump with his tweeting - but his untruthful tweet is costing us!1 point
