  1. The Liberals voted down bill S-217 which was passed overwhelmingly by the senate and which would have required that judges be given the criminal history, if any, of the person who is undergoing a bail hearing. Pardon me for being startled that this isn't already done. I would think that a person's criminal history would be extremely relevant in determining whether an individual should get bail, and how high it should be, and what conditions it would be given. Apparently not. This bill would have remedied it bu the Liberals voted it down, apparently because they feel that it's not fair for criminals to be judged by a judge based on their past criminal history. Not even in a bail hearing. http://www.edmontonsun.com/2017/05/12/widow-speaks-out-after-wynns-law-effectively-defeated

  3. Given that opening sentence, you shouldn't find it strange. As you said, it's all about culture. And North American culture celebrates and exalts athletics and performing arts but degrades "nerds", distrusts scientists, and loathes the fact that technical people can get decent paying jobs.

  4. It's the arguments against which are simple minded. They don't hold up to an instant's engagement of the forebrain and are simply excuses to do nothing.

  5. I posted the cite. If people are too lazy to read it that's their problem. I'm not required to make their arguments for them. The counter arguments are nonsense. First, while the accused's record is usually presented, it isn't always. Clearly. Else this would not have arisen. Second, the idea that this will somehow slow the system down is preposterous. We're talking about handing a file to the presiding judge so he or she could skim through it and see what kind of person he/she is dealing with.

  6. I miss posters such as jdobbin and many others who enlivened the Board in the past. I wish this one and others would return.

  7. What you won't read here from the Canadian wannabes is how much Obamacare screwed up existing American health insurance costs, coverage, and access. Trump had nothing to do with that, but he reaped the political rewards.

  8. Kathleen Wynne has screwed over more Canadians than Trump ever could.

  9. I don't like the leftist zio liberal morning news myself. All I get from them is more brainwashing and propaganda news. When Obama was president I never saw as much anti-Obama news stories from the leftist zio media like I see today with their constant bashing of Trump. Obama should have been impeached dozens of times but survived. Trump will also survive. You are just a sore liberal leftist loser. Get over it will you.

  10. Trump has been so successful at dominating the news cycle, he has Canada and other nations devoting copious amounts of media bandwidth to whatever he is doing. President Trump's communications team and other "handlers" cannot keep up with him. The entrenched Washington D.C. culture cannot keep up with him. Even the SNL writers cannot keep up with him. ... and Trump "supporters" love it.

  11. Not when pointed out by the very same people who adore their own confused, flip-flopping leader (Trudeau). This doesn't make them any smarter or astute than Trump "supporters", it just means more partisan politics as usual. President Trump owes his harshest critics nothing, and he got elected that way. Trump's methods are now well understood....confrontation...confusion....misdirection....only to walk it back to a more moderate position/decision that is more than he otherwise would have achieved. Trump is basically a salesman from Queens. And that is...very, very American.

  13. Not necessarily but it could open the door to less protection and it lends to the appearance of selecting out one form of hatred over others and that distinction or discrimination in singling out that one form of hatred does create an appearance of bias, selectivity, and priority of importance as to whose hatred is more serious and that was and remains wrong, You can say what you want but I am telling you when the MP and Trudeau singled out Islamophobia as they did but remained silent on anti-Semitic diatribes coming out of the same Mosques it spoke loudly to what BC is trying to point out. Its not just my religion or ethnicity Judaism either that was given the loud message we don't count. I have never heard Trudeau once speak out about hateful speeches given by Mullahs in Canada about gays, women, Christians, Bahaiis Buddhists, Siekhs, either. He does not treat everyone the same.

  14. I have to 100% agree from my work with troubled families and drug addicts but I don't want to trot out the stats to back you up just say you did an excellent job describing it as a culture of access sense not a drug crave sense. I will give one example you are well aware of. Cannabis has obtained and rightfully so legitimate status as a painkiller and medicinal alternative to other drugs. We know for example its used for glaucoma, certain kinds of epilepsy that resist medication, people on chemotherapy, people with chronic pain from terminal illnesses. For such people it adds quality of life. We know however that someone people CALL themselves chronic pain sufferers and they are in fact masking addictive personalities and they'll use anything including marijhuana precriptions to legitimize their addictions to get other drugs. I have seen the connection between OxyContin users and chronic pain dope users. Not all crhonic pain users of dope are legit. Some are drug addicts, period. That's as close as I can explain it. I am a huge supporter of medicinal marijhuana. However I think because the contents of the THC in it today is far more concentrated and the dope can be laced with all kinds of chemicals saying its harmless is stupid. Its going to increase car accidebts and lung related diseases and with certain manic-depressives, bi-polars, people suffering ceryain kinds of depression, anxiety disorders, ocd, it could trigger very serious issues. It might add complications as well to people with diabetes. Now if it is eaten or put in vapour form its a lot safer. All that aid there is this cultural idealization that goes with it buts not just some white Rasta wannabees we are talking about today. That said if its controlled properly its a tax source and one would hope the tax from it can go back into our medical system. Governments beingw hat they are will probably mis-spend it on something else.

  15. You said, "Seems to me it's just an archaic left-over from days past." Well certainly everyone that knows anything about North American history knows that Columbus certainly did not "discover" America at all. You know that right? So why the pesistance with the false myth that Columbus discovered America? Why is it still taught in your schools? Why do they still have a 'Columbus Day?' One would think that L'anse aux meadows would have changed all that, yet it didn't even make a scratch on that venerable myth. Why is that? In the same way, Canadians have their national myths - almost untouchable - about the Monarchy, all things British, General Brock, stiff upper lip and so on. Wink, wink; nudge, nudge, say no more. Why should we change all of this, when it serves us perfectly well? Why re-order government to satisfy something that, in the end, is simply esoterica that would get any ruling party tossed from government in a hurry? When we talk about "costs" of maintaining such myths, well that is wholly immaterial since it serves peace, order and the greater good and all that rot.

  16. I think you forget that Israel agreed to the process of peace talks to end violence and begin ending settlements elsewhere. Hamas didn't. They want all the land and were prepared to use terrorism to get it. Quit pretending that you don't know where you stand on terrorism and if you believe Hamas is a terrorist organization.
