noahbody Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 THe Bloc doesn't believe Shane Doan should be captain of Team Canada for something he allegedly said about French players in a game a few years ago. The incident was investigated by the NHL and he was cleared. Now parliament is going to investigate. Way to support our team! Quote

fellowtraveller Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 Wilber, no. I hope Doan wins his lawsuit against the uber-smug Denis Coderre and cleans him out. Quote The government should do something.
noahbody Posted May 2, 2007 Author Report Posted May 2, 2007 Don't the players have a big say in who will be their captain? I would think so. I suspect this is some roundabout way to get Quebecers wanting to have a Team Quebec separate from a Team Canada. I hope some french players speak up and say they're voting Conservative next time. Question: Where the f*ck has this guy been for the past 30 years? Hasn't this MP watched even one iota of CBC's "This Hour Has 22 Minutes" or umpteem other CBC comedies? It's practically a national institution, including referenda, electioneering, comedy routines, hockey games, etc. for the ROC and the French to call eachother names. Quote

The incident was investigated by the NHL and he was cleared. Now parliament is going to investigate. Way to support our team! Oh I dunno. It's really kind of funny. You have a political party entirely made up of and supported by people who dislike Anglophones so much they want to separate from Canada because there's too many Anglos in it - demanding punishment for a guy who may once have insulted a French guy. And the other parties went along with it because they've got no balls and are afraid of being seen as not caring when people insult French guys. So in the heat of battle, where guys are jamming sticks and fists and elbows and knees into each other's mouths and ribs and balls, where players are expressing their - lack of admiration for each other - in very colourful language, it is alleged Doan may have called some French guy a frog. And for this, four years later, parliament is holding hearings?! Holy Christ, do these people have nothing more important to worry about? And what exactly are they going to say to Hockey Canada? Because someone said he once called someone a Frog he's unfit to be captain? Even though there's no proof, and a hearing was held and found no proof? If I was the hockey Canada guy I'd sit there and say "Well, how do you know he actually said anything?" and every time the idiot MPs sputter about something I'd repeat "but how do you know he ever said that?" I suppose that's too much to ask for. Hockey Canada will send some very polite guys in suits who will express their dedication to universal love and brotherhood and admiration for the noble French people, and let the idiot MPs sputter without humiliating them, and that will be that. Wilber Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 Ya have to wonder some MP's ever think about how stupid they are going to sound before they shoot off their mouths. Makes you wonder how they got elected. The report I read said Doan's alleged comments were directed at the officials. Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC
geoffrey Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 How much is this investigation going to cost me? I've never seen such stupidity in my life, he was even cleared of the comments by an NHL investigation. I really couldn't care if he had made the comments either. Unianimous support on this one. More Quebec pandering. Hopefully the cost of the investigation comes out of their transfer payments. Quote RealRisk.ca - (Latest Post: Prosecutors have no "Skin in the Game") --
jefferiah Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 Of all the important national issues that could be brought up in parliament, the Bloc felt it necessary to raise a stink about the Captain of Team Canada? What does this have to do with the government? I think everyone is equally baffled about this. I read about it for the last few days like everyone else, but every article or mention of it in the news referred to the Shane Doan remarks with little detail. Tonight on Coach's Corner though, Don Cherry brought up the original Shane Doan NHL case. Apparently the horrible thing he said was not an insult to french people at all. It was a remark about the refs at a game in Montreal. He said to someone "four french refs" what do you expect. Not the french refs are bad, but I mean this was a Habs game in the Bell Centre...so he was making a remark (perhaps one he meant only in the heat of the moment) about the refs being partial Well, I am a Montreal fan, but I dont take offense to that. I dont know too many hockey fans who havent slammed the refs for being partial once in a while. Quote "Governing a great nation is like cooking a small fish - too much handling will spoil it." geoffrey Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 Apparently the NHL found no evidence he actually even said it. And the comment was “Fucking French. Did a great job," according to a Globe article I read earlier today (can't find it now). Just thought I'd throw in some facts. Now Doan has offered to step down, I hope the coach/management refuse the offer and make sure he remains captain. This is outrageous. Adelle Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 Do our elected reprehensives and the leaders of our government not have matters of greater importance to consider of national and international concern than who the captain of a hockey team is? He was cleared of any wrong doing, is held in great respect by his team mates and his peers but Team Canada officials must now defend their decision. Yes, the GoC does provide some money to the team and, if it was a matter of how that money was spent, they certainly have a right to ask questions but that does not give them the right to question the make up of the team or the positions held by individual players. Other organizations also provide funds; do they also get the right to call the admin on the carpet? I am sure that there are other things that the government could better spend it's time dealing with. Quote "Truth is hard to find, harder to recognize and, often, even harder to accept." Adelle Shea

FTA Lawyer Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 I've never before wished we had recall legislation, but I would be prepared to draft up a petition for every single useless, idiotic, pathetic MP to have the whole f-ing house booted for unanimously supporting a Parliamentary investigation into something so mind-numbingly stupid. Shane Doan is a pro hockey player in the public eye...I don't care about how this might affect him (he's a big boy and will deal with it). Similarly, I don't care about how the morale of Team Canada is affected...they are all big boys and will deal with it. August1991 Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 If you had asked me last week who Shane Doan was, I would have guessed that it was a Walt Disney movie about a cowboy and his dog. But from what I can gather, many if not most of the posters on this forum would be outraged if an American hockey player had made a similar remark about Canadian referees in an Olympic match. stignasty Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 Doan said that, as Joseph hovered around centre ice, he skated over and yelled: "Four French referees in Montreal, Cuje, figure it out." Nicholson told the committee he has known Doan for 14 years and that the player does not deserve the treatment he has received from federal politicians. "When you start to criticize an individual who is a proud Canadian that goes over there, represents every youngster in this game of hockey in our country, and we put him through what we put in through, just before the Olympics, and now … I get very emotional." He told the committee that Hockey Canada wanted to "protect Shane Doan" amid a controversy that has taken a toll on the player, his wife and their four children. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2007/05/03/doan.html But from what I can gather, many if not most of the posters on this forum would be outraged if an American hockey player had made a similar remark about Canadian referees in an Olympic match. He shouldn't be the captain of team Canada because of those words? Doan didn't use an epithet in referring to the refs. He accused French-Canadian refs of bias in the only French Canadian city with a team in the NHL. What the f*ck is up with Denis Coderre and why can't he let this issue die? He tried to get Doan kicked off the Olympic team. Didn't happen. He tried to stop Doan from wearing the C this year. Didn't happen. Coderre made whatever point he was going to make during the Olympics. Going after Doan for the 2007 World Championships is childish and overkill.
