I for one, am not impressed with the outcome of the Grammys. Yes, I love what the Dixie Chicks have stood for politically, and the song Not Ready to Make Nice is one of favourite songs for the year.

But even I thought all the adulation was insulting. So much talent was overlooked in order to make a political statement. It's an A-W-A-R-D show - to award the best performances of the year - not to make a political statement.

I think both Gnarles Barkley and James Blunt especially deserved something.

Oh well, I guess that's a sign of the times.

Actually in some countries they would have been stoned. Thats with real rocks.

What's your point? Are you advocating stoning them?

I don't think the fact that some people would do worse than threaten their lives justifies people threatening their lives. Saying otherwise just demonstrates how people's morals can often be trumped by their partisanship.

I am saying that in some countries women who express themselves are actually stoned. Afghanistan under the Taliban for example. I was reacting to the "only in America" crack. That's crap. In some countries they would be dead. In America they are raking in the cash and getting awards.

And point taken, willl refine it to some on the right of centre.

I used to avoid such generalizations on this forum, because I agree they are (generally) stupid, but it seems every second post these days is a rant against "lefties" so I'm gradually sinking to the lowest common denominator.

The DC getting Grammies is like Carter getting the Nobel Peace Prize. Liberals are using a contest to make a political statement. It raises some interest, but the DC have lost in the end. Some sales are made up by libs buying their songs, but the traditional base of Country music will never, never return.

On the contrary, I think even the traditional base is starting to agree with what they said.

Bottom line is:

Who's near the top? Dixie Chicks.

Who's near the bottom? Bush.

and we haven't heard from those Liberal-haters in a while: Bill O'Reilly, Ann Coulter, etc.

What is it with today's right wing that they cannot tolerate criticism? And you give perfect examples of this.

C'mon - be objective here. It's obvious this is an example of BOTH sides not tolerating criticism.

By now we've been enduring a 6 month tirade of movies, tears, talk shows, videos and "bwaahaa we won you lost" childishness from the dixie chicks in reaction to criticism of THEM.

Any celeb who pops off on a political issue is going to get flack from some quarter.

.

Well that just simply isnt true.As I said earlier celebs ( musicians) have mixed politics and music for decades and decades .Seems it is only the American right wing bigots and hate mongers and bible thumpers who seem to throw a tantrum and death threats around

Think back to the famous Beatles records burning by those same ignorant American right wing idiots just because of something that was said

Nope.It is the American right winged bible thumping racists who get all worked up about little things like what a singer in a band said on stage.

As the words from the Dixies song goes...

"And how in the world

Can the words that I said

Send somebody so over the edge

That they'd write me a letter

Saying that I better shut up and sing

Or my life will be over"

That says right winger all over it

Careful. By your own rules, you can't call someone a bigot hatemonger without being one.

The more award shows become a political forum the less relevance they will have.

Since when were award shows relevant? How could bringing up political topics during award shows make them less relevant than they already are?

It seems to me the most memorable award show moments were political ones: Marlon Brando's refusal to accept the Best Actor award; Kim Basinger ragging out the academy for ignoring Do the Right Thing; Milton Berle being humiliated by Rupaul (that one was my favourite).

Relevant in regard to rewarding the best in their industry. But you're right, its been awhile.

hmm.

You know all of the christians in America do you?

Or perhaps thats just one person, or a small group.

Would you consider it racist if I said "those street dwelling drunk indians"?

Probably.

You're guilty of the same mass generalization based upon a few small examples.

Not just denounced them--threatened their lives.

Only in America would a bunch of redneck right wingers threaten some ladies in a music band because they didnt like what they had to say

But yea they had the last laugh

Heh-Heh

The people that burned their records (which I think is dumb myself) have a right to do so. Their was no bunch of rednecks who threatened them. It was one fan who said to shut up and sing. That's all it was. As for their sales going down the listening public has a right not to buy their albums. I dont care what the Dixie Chicks say because I dont think they are talented, and that Earl song had to be the most annoying song in the world. Anyways, why are they so hung up about free speech. They were allowed to say what they wanted. The law never got involved and prevented them. One guy uttered a death threat (one guy, not a "bunch" of redneck right wingers). And fans who decided they didnt like the Dixie Chicks anymore exercised their freedom to not buy their albums anymore. I think the Dixie Chicks like the publicity, but really they are not brave martyrs or anything.

Of course it's true, celebs who come out public on either side of the political spectrom take their lumps. That's fair. Some get carried away with their response. There is a lunatic fringe at both ends of the spectrum. Your comments are always so vitriolic that I honestly wonder about you. If you want to go out and buy a record or book and then go burn it, that's your business. If you take them out of schools and libraries or burn those which belong to other people, that's another matter entirely.

Well that is just plain silly.

Of course people have a right not to buy anyones music.I( havnt heard of people being forced to buy music that they dont want too.

So that is just a non issue

As for the Chicks not being talented.

Well only a non apreciater of music would say such a thing.

They are hugely talented.

You dont have to like a persons music to realize the talent in it.

There are certain types of music I dont like, but I would never say the musician doesnt have talent.

I cant stand opera but I wish I had the talent to sing like that

And this. The Dixies were allowed to say what they wanted?

What kind of a statement is that? Who said they were hung up about free speech?

Sounds like it is you saying that

Of course they can say whatever they want.On stage or on record.Who can stop them ?

People have been doing that since forever.

If the right wing were not so hung up on what people say then this would never have even been an issue.

Many a musician including Neil Young have been quite frank about what they think of bush.

Neil on live TV in with millions listening called bush a drunk driving an SUV

I mean g.w.moron was allowed to lie to the world and over 3000 Americans have died because of those lies.

And he was allowed to lie.

So whats your problem then. The Dixie Chicks say what they want, and people who dont want to listen to them dont listen to them. End of story.

I certainly dont have a problem with anyone who doesnt want to listen to something they dont want to listen to.

And I certainly dont think someone "shouldnt" have to listen to something they dont want to listen to.

Thats just a plain stupid thing to say, never mind think

I think them DC,s could care less about right wing racist bible thumpers who dont want to listen to them.

But I think being threatened with death because of something you said on stage is a little much, even by American standards.

I like the Chix music, but once they used the stage for their own political arena they left themselves open for the boycott. I don't know why celebrities feel they can say anything they like without any reaction. I sure don't pay to see a performer spout of about politics, I pay to listen to them sing.

Hey, why is it that people get so pissed off about celebreties voicing political opinions, but don't get pissed off with know-nothings who are actually paid to voice political opinions? To me, the proliferation of pundits is the perfidious pox on the politic.
