noahbody Posted February 6, 2007 Report Posted February 6, 2007 The reality is other than showing leadership on the issue of climate change, if Canada meets it's Kyoto targets, it's not going to make a dent in the overall scheme of things. So why obsess about it? Why not obsess about a far more improtant, immediate problem, the health care system. With baby boomers turning 60 this year, the county has about 5 years to figure it out. Costs will skyrocket and the tax base will shrink drastically. Canada will have to become the highest taxed country to pay for its inefficient social programs. It's a probem that has be known for decades, yet noting has been done. The Liberal government turned our system into a sacred cow for political gain, vowing to protect it at all costs. The costs of their inaction are now just around the corner. If anything PM Harper has shown an ability to do the unpopular for the betterment of the country. When he acts on health care, I would hope the other parties, media and Canadians give him full support. If not, there won't be a dime to spend on such things as global warming and other initiatives. Costs will skyrocket and the tax base will shrink drastically. Canada will have to become the highest taxed country to pay for its inefficient social programs. So Harper has some way of treating babyboomers that costs nothing? See, if the Conservatives were worried about the costs of an aging population, they wouldn't be wasting our taxes on beer and popcorn handouts for parents and toys for the military. They would at least pay down the debt. But they are such good financial managers, they are spending left and right like there is no tomorrow and are well on their way to bury us in debt Brian Mulroney style. Hopefully, they won't be in the driver's seat long enough to do it. Quote

Catchme Posted February 7, 2007 Report Posted February 7, 2007 The IPCC WGI Summary for policymakers has highlighted that uncertainty dynamical response of ice sheets is the major outstanding uncertainty in sea-level prediction. This assessment has emerged so strongly because recent scientific advances from BAS and other scientific institutions show climate influencing ice sheets much more rapidly than was considered likely even a few years ago. Our understanding is increasing fast, but obstacles remains in trying to predict the response of marine ice sheets to such extreme rates of change, when no observable parallel exists on Earth today. The geological record shows that in the past ice sheets have collapsed rapidly and caused rapid sea-level rise but this does not provide sufficient understanding about which processes were to blame, to state clearly how vulnerable today’s ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica are. http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/News_and_Infor...tory.php?id=297 Quote When the rich wage war, it's the poor who die. ~Jean-Paul Sartre

One excellent analysis I read distinguished between "elite" problems and those of the non-elites, in the context of Australia's politics. The gist of it was the the Labour (sp) Party was focusing on global warming, the rights of Aboriginals, etc. and often lose popular support by failing to address everyday problems, such as crumbling highways, and the Islamic problem. By analogy, the Liberals here seem more concerned with global warming and the rights of Palestinians than the rights of Canadians. Quote Free speech: "You can say what you want, but I don't have to lend you my megaphone." Always remember that when you are in the right you can afford to keep your temper, and when you are in the wrong you cannot afford to lose it. - J.J. Reynolds. Will the steps anyone is proposing to fight "climate change" reduce a single temperature, by a single degree, at a single location? The mantra of "world opinion" or the views of the "international community" betrays flabby and weak reasoning (link).
