A black dog is also the phantasm of choice to jump or run across the road if you are falling asleep at the wheel.

Anyway, I like the idea, Higgly, hehehe... but just keep it as one thread.

What the heck are you guys talking about? Is this a 'before your time young Geoffrey' moment or is this some crazy stoner language? I just don't get it.

Dear geoffrey,

While Remiel's comment may be a bit cryptic, I believe he refers to what the coppers most often hear when someone ends up in the ditch. "I didn't fall asleep at the wheel, officer, I swerved to miss something that ran across the road..."

Would the Special Olympics Committee disqualify kids born with flippers from the swimming events?

For fun, I'll resurrect this thread. And respond to Kimmy's comment.

This is the only politics forum that I read. I have tried others, and generally found them disappointing in comparison to this one. Led Boots mentioned a "me too" mentality at some boards, which I think is a good description of the shortcoming of many boards. Many boards seem to have a defined outlook which attracts members who share the same mindset. Original thought doesn't happen very often on these boards, and while I often peek in at certain places to see how certain segments are reacting to current events.
I have to agree.

The real measure of this forum is when a perplexing 'current event' occurs.

At some time in the future, there will be an Air Traffic Controllers strike, an FLQ crisis or even a Canadian World Trade Center. Maybe Alberta will elect a 'separatist' government.

And then, people will be curious to know what others think. And we'll come here and read what other people think of the event - people we know from previous posts and from across the political spectrum.

I'd also maybe impose a trial period for new posters. Two posts a day for a month or so at first.
Yeah. That'd keep those crumby noobs from cluttering your precious forum.
I have no connection to this forum other than having posted here often.

Figleaf, to be honest, I looked around at other forums, tried a few and then settled on this one. (I occasionally post on a very good French forum where I lurk but I'm more curious about English-Canadian views, from the west in particuler.)

MLF, aside from being English and from the West, still seems to be the best forum that I've found. Nevertheless, it's a work in progress and I think Greg should experiment. One idea is to pay attention to new posters, control them and filter the legitimate from the cavalier. Most legitimate posters are tentative at first so this would impose no cost.

I think a good forum amounts to a club with various, uh, members - as Thelonious might say.

Those whom I admire solely for their ideas and eloquence are too many to mention. But the person who has not only the penmanship and the ideas, but the wit as well.... is Figleaf. I have laughed out loud at more of his/her posts than anyone else.

Well heck, pardon me while I deflate my head ... Thank you!

I suppose since I originally authored this thread that I should respond to its resurrection.

This is the first and pretty much only political board I have ever belonged to. I still have a hard time believing that it took me so many years to actually look for one.

I am not so sure how useful the debates arguments here would be in such a situation as you describe though, August. Often, you have to sift through a lot of garbage to find the thoughtful or original posts.

This time around, perhaps I'll refrain from giving my top three...

In any case, as a draconian side note, I think you would almost have a much better debating board that was invitation only, thats focus was on catering to lurkers, not posters. The moderators job would lean more to taking questions from non-posters to give to the debaters and vetting possible posters. More like the non-internet variety of public forum. I suppose I can expect to be chided or flamed for even thinking that though, hehehe...

I still chuckle at the West Jet dividends analogy in regards to the Charter.... :)

So you love Figleaf. Well people love Paris Hilton too so I think we should remember that. Here is a quote from one of her fans;

"Yes, that's right, I think Paris Hilton is smart. She's gotten herself to a point at which she can do whatever she really wants to do ("act", model, "sing", etc.) and get mad publicity for it. She knows her persona and doesn't try to be anything else. Perhaps politicians could learn a thing or two from her."

And here is one of her many fan clubs that thinks he is God;

Club: PARIS HILTON FAN CLUB<3

Club Description:

For everyone who thinks paris hilton is god

Club Rules:

if you don't love paris...well don't join but everyone should love her so everyone should join!

So my point is, I can not believe you choose Figleaf but not Paris Hilton. And yes she writes in. She has a noms de plums on these posts. I can't reveal it. I promised not to.

I think I spent one night in Paris.

Rue, so in your world enjoying someone's sense of humour is the equivalent of loving that person, eh?

Somehow I just got a deja vu of my best friend in grade one. Surprised you didn't start singing kissing in the tree or ask me if I wanna marry fig.

Oh no, I shouldn't laugh. Next thing you know, Rue might get the wrong impression. :)

OMG, Rue!

What's your obsession with Paris Hilton?

I prefer chocolate, sex, running, and Belgian beer or pretending I am still young and that Paris Hilton or Buffy would date me.

Better yet, why do you declare your lust for her on one board and then come to another and belittle others for it?

I can say with all honesty that this is the best board that i've come across on the net. And what makes it so good is you guys, i guess it would be easier to make a list of those that i don't like, but even those are pretty colorful so i tip my hat to you all.

Yes all of you, the left, center and right, the tree huggers, and tree cutters, french, and english, the separatists and federalists, and the list goes on...because without you things would be pretty boring.

Thank you.

Maybe a little test - do you believe the CIA blew up the world trade centre? Yes? Buh-bye.

There are a few too many wackos with raving loony conspiracy theories and absurd world-views who have crept onto this site over the past year.

Can't you just ignore the 9/11-was-an-inside-job threads? I do. I also stopped reading the many climate-change denial threads ages ago, and I don't bother with your all-brown-immigrants-are-destroying-our-country threads either.
