Canadian companies sign more than $1.7-billion in deals during federal trade mission in Japan

Canadian companies have struck more than $1.7-billion in commercial deals in Japan as a part of the Team Canada trade mission.

Maninder Sidhu, federal Minister of International Trade, witnessed the signing of 14 agreements on Thursday, marking what he said was a record amount of money secured during a Canadian trade mission.

The trade mission was the largest to the Indo-Pacific region since the government launched its trade diversification strategy in the continent.

“This is trade diversification in action: Canadian businesses signing real agreements, opening new markets, and deepening our partnership with Japan, one of our most important partners in the Indo-Pacific,” Mr. Sidhu said in a statement.

The three-day mission followed a partnership announced by Canada and Japan during Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to Tokyo in March that is aimed at bolstering the nations’ defence, energy, trade and technology sectors through cross-country collaboration.

The trade visit comes on the heels of a new Canada-Japan Equipment and Technology Transfer Agreement, which came into force last week and establishes a framework to facilitate the transfer of defence equipment and technology.

Ottawa seeking closer defence ties with Japan as it grows presence in Indo-Pacific

The moves are part of broader efforts by Ottawa to diversify and strengthen trade and security co-operation with overseas allies.

The mission, led by Mr. Sidhu, brought more than 300 delegates from 175 Canadian organizations to deepen existing relationships and pursue new partnerships.

Tokyo-headquartered Mitsubishi Electric Corp. selected Canadian technology company MDA Space Ltd.to support defence satellite communications for Japan’s Ministry of Defence.

MDA Space will manufacture and test advanced antenna solutions in Montreal, while the company’s operations in Britain will support the core technology.

Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. invested in Canadian climate tech company Deep Sky in a move to bolster Japan’s carbon capture ecosystem and support the development of the Japan–Canada carbon removal corridor. The deal strengthens a partnership established in December, when the two companies signed a memorandum of understanding.

Montreal-based Deep Sky was founded in 2022 and specializes in direct air capture carbon removal.

“Investments like this help strengthen commercial ties between Canada and Japan while supporting the growth of innovative climate solutions developed in Canada and deployed globally,” Mr. Sidhu said.

Megan Shay, Deep Sky’s vice-president of communications, told The Globe and Mail said it was a “significant” deal and the “first of its kind for the bank” but did not disclose the terms.

An industry source said the investment is an “eight-figure” amount, or more than $10-million. The Globe is not identifying the source because they were not authorized to speak on the matter.

BlackBerry Ltd. signed a deal with Japanese advanced car parts supplier Astemo to provide software for next-generation vehicles.

BlackBerry’s QNX software powers digital dashboards, advanced driver assistance systems and hands-free infotainment for brands like BMW, Ford and Toyota.

BlackBerry reported Thursday that QNX revenue increased by 26 per cent in the first quarter and the unit is expected to continue delivering growth while being the company’s focus.

Montreal-based satellite designer and builder RSAT Space and Warpspace – a Japanese space-tech startup that develops intersatellite communication tools – put up US$5-million for a partnership.

Gurvinder Chohan, chief executive of RSAT, said in an interview that the companies have been working together for a few years and would be incorporating Warpspace’s laser communication technology into their satellites that are made in Canada.

Mr. Chohan said that together they’ll be selling the data to various government and non-government offices, which are expected to bring in between US$5-million and US$6-million a year in revenue.

ZeroKey, a quantum tech company based in Calgary, signed a memorandum of understanding with Deloitte Japan to introduce factory automation and digital transformation in Japan’s manufacturing sector using ZeroKey’s Canadian-developed real-time location technology. The company has previously partnered with Deloitte for its Smart Factory in Montreal.

The trade mission allowed Canadian companies to cross paths in Tokyo, including Vancouver-based SPARC Global and Autnhive Corporation, an Oakville, Ont.-based cybersecurity platform, which signed a memorandum of understanding in Japan worth $10-million.

A spokesperson for Mr. Sidhu said Vancouver-based Kanata Clean Power & Climate Technologies Corp., which is developing Kanata LNG, a floating export project planned for Prince Rupert, B.C., is actively pursuing agreements with Japanese buyers.

Kanata expects the project would be used to export liquefied natural gas to Asia.

But hey, prove me wrong. You post what it actually cost and we'll see.

In other words more of your absolute bullshit. A trip to Japan doesn’t cost $2.7 billion. Food doesn’t cost 1 billion. Once again you are getting number and details horribly mixed up and you lack the intellect to how absurd they are. And you offer ZERO evidence to support your absurd claims and instead demand people “prove you wrong”

who paid for the trade mission to japan?

The participating Canadian businesses and organizations paid for their own travel, accommodations, and meals, while the Federal Government of Canada covered the costs of organizing and hosting the core programming.
The Team Canada Trade Mission to Japan, which took place from June 23 to 26, 2026, split expenses using the following framework:
Participant Expenses
  • No Attendance Fees: There was no registration fee charged by the government to join the official business delegation.
  • Out-of-Pocket Costs: The nearly 300 business leaders from roughly 175 organizations were entirely responsible for booking and financing their own airfare, ground transportation, hotels, and personal daily meals.
  • Federal Subsidies: Some eligible small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) received financial assistance to help offset up to 50% of their travel costs through Global Affairs Canada's CanExport program."

The government, that date for its organization and for all of its people who attended and for the venues etc etc.

Individual companies may have paid their own travel expenses and that's great but they're also the ones that got the contracts and get to keep the money.

If you've got some information that suggests that the government paid less money than I said then by all means let's hear it.

The "catch" is that these deals are largely long-term commitments, Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs), or early-stage partnerships. They are not instant cash injections. Entering the Japanese market requires significant upfront investment, years of face-to-face meetings to build trust, and navigating unique cultural and regulatory barriers before seeing actual revenue.

Many are MOUs, not final sales: A substantial portion of the $1.7-billion figure consists of MOUs and preliminary research agreements. These are frameworks to explore business together rather than guaranteed revenue.

Long sales cycles: The Japanese business landscape demands a massive investment of time and relationship-building. As one delegate noted, "You cannot come to Japan and expect success overnight."

Strategic geopolitical pivot: More than 40 of the 175 Canadian companies were focused heavily on defence, AI, and cybersecurity. These partnerships are tied to the Canada-Japan Comprehensive Strategic Roadmap, meaning many "commercial deals" are tightly intertwined with government defence procurement and Indo-Pacific security strategies.

Sounds like you're starting to get a little upset. Trying to calm down little guy, this is just the internet.

And fair enough. It might be argued that these deals in and of themselves may not be worth much more than we paid to get them if they even materialize at all over the years but they open doors and perhaps will lead to further expansion of our relationship.

But the bar it's pretty minor and carney is trying to sell it off as being a big win reality it's basically baby's first step and there are economy is still going to be every bit as much in trouble as it was before over the next year with this even with this.
