One would think that with the amount of taxes that Canadians pay at every level that we could at least have decent roads.

Not so.

Beware the Brookfield industrial complex...

And a portion of the federal taxes on gasoline.

Federal Gasoline Tax
The federal government imposes an Excise Tax on gasoline, which is currently at 0.10 CAD per liter. This tax is used to fund various federal programs, but a portion is earmarked for infrastructure, including road maintenance.

The paving business in Canada is rather corrupt though, especially with regards to the bidding process.

For federal roads...the national highway system.

As it should be.

Yes, the grease.  No one knows how much corruption costs in Canada because no one is monitoring it. The cops just get lucky now and then. For what it's worth the World Economic Forum estimated it increases the cost of doing business as much as 10% on average around the world and the OECD pegs it at about 5% of global GDP. Approximately $3.6 trillion USD annually in bribes and stolen funds.

So do we raise taxes to account for the cost of grease or invest in making institutional changes that might actually lead to lower taxes, better allocation of the public's money, and maybe a few less potholes?

I said now watch what you say they'll be calling you a radical,
a liberal, oh fanatical criminal
