That's what I like about Conservatives.
Still stuck on the 'flag debate' 60 years later, still under the misconception that our own identity is simply one of tradition and they lost something in order to appease someone else.

Keep going, bleat about the horrors of bilingualism and the metric system next....

Like don't even try to crawl out from the pigeon holes yourselves, just whine that someone else made them.

You're such a hate-filled lunatic that if he had said that he absolutely supported changing the flag you would have accused him of being a traitor because he wasn't supporting our traditions. There's literally nothing anyone that you perceive of as being conservative can do that in any way shape or form is right. You just live and breathe hatred. And the occasional shot of Nyquil or cheap booze. Cooking sherry would be my guess

Just reading about the Great Canadian Flag Debate in 1965.  PM Pearson brought in the new maple leaf flag and got rid of the previous flag, the Canadian Red Ensign.  The Red Ensign was the Canadian Armed Forces flag.  It showed our connection to the British Commonwealth.  The new maple leaf flag got rid of that.  Was it to appease Quebec?  I don't know.  The maple leaf flag was brought in by the Liberals which are a Quebec political party to a large extent.  The maple leaf seems to have a lot to do with Quebec if I'm not mistaken.  At the time of the flag debate,  former PM John Diefenbaker opposed changing the flag to the maple leaf flag.  But the Liberals were the government at the time and managed to force it through Parliament.

It seems to me our history would be better preserved by keeping the Red Ensign flag as shown below.  At least one great thing is the British Columbia flag still has our British roots on it.  Not sure how long that will last with the BC NDP trying to hand B.C. over to the natives though.  Better not say to much about that.  We don't want the BC NDP to get any ideas.

I doubt it was just to appease Quebec. I think they were looking for something genuinely Canadian and let's face it, a beaver on a flag would look silly :)

The design looks really cool, it works in black or white which is important, it's something we can all relate to, and if we're being 100% honest it's probably the best choice we could have picked.

If it made Quebec happy at the time I'm sure that was a happy side benefit. But the maple is hardly unique to quebec

But I doubt the separatists in Quebec care what kind of flag we have for Canada.   Each province has it's own flag anyway.

But I looked at the flags for New Zealand and Australia and they are both very similar.  They kept the British Union Jack on their flag.  We should have done the same thing.   We had a perfectly good flag.

This is Australia's flag, followed by New Zealand's flag.  They are both Constitutional monarchies and have the same King as we have.   I don't like to see our historical symbols being eliminated.

Changing Canada's flag probably had more to do with multiculturalism which was and is a big thing to liberals in Canada.  Why do we have to change to accommodate immigrants anyway?  They should adjust to what we have or don't come here.

I suspect that you're right and it wasn't a huge deal for them

Why? to be  blunt I didn't think our flag was that great to begin with. Their flags look fairly styling but our Old Flag always look clunky to me. I'm much prefer the flag we have now, I think it's important to remember our roots to take pride in where we came from, but it's also important to remember that we are our own country for their own nation and pride.

Also the maple leaf is a nice easy symbol. It's hard to get a kangaroo or a wallaby on a flag and make it look good  :)

As I point out once again, no you are for constantly inventing your warped interpretations of what others post.
But yeah I would criticize someone wanting to cling to some Union Jack instead of our own distinct flag. 60 years later I will merely laugh at their obstinance and move on.

Kid YOU are the warped one. I'm pointing out the simple truth.  You are a hate filled person with a below average iq who would claim that  ANYTHING he said was "ultra right wing".

You would if he was conservative. But you would also criticize the same person for not wanting to keep the union jack and our history and would demand to know why they wanted to destroy the country.

no matter what he says you're against it. You're not responding out of intellect or reason you're just reacting out of hatred and spite.
