But gay implies a chosen sexuality and you actually haven't chosen for sure until after you're out of school. Or hell, most probably never even had sex in those days. Nowadays these bans are about anything that doesn't condemn LGBTQ or mentions any sexuality at all. The zealots seem to want to go back to movies where married people had separate beds, 'down there' was just the thing you peed from, and Mom & Dad had 'the talk' when you were 21.. I mean honestly, banning a book about Two Moms when some of their classmates have two moms seems a bit assholic. Edited September 1, 2025 by herbie 1 Quote

herbie Posted September 1, 2025 Report Posted September 1, 2025 Oh f*ck Mr M0ron is back again. Still not having Googled what a straw man fallacy even is. It is not discussing two sides of the same coin. My kid got sent home to change his t-shirt that said P*RNSTAR (with a star for the O) and that's proper and fair. Offensive is offensive and school is not your own home. The student in question is free to wear that shirt to and from school and at home. Principals and School Boards need to make the decisions and not politicians pandering to zealots like Florida and now Alberta. WHO decides. Point being it depends who is judging: a sane person or some raving zealot, does it offend the people attending or people who don't even see or read it? 1 Quote

A friend just went out and bought Handmaid's Tale so her 14 year old could read it. She was reading Steven Kind on her own at 9 and 10 Danielle Smith never banned A Handmaid's Tale. The Edmonton school board did. Quote Premier Danielle Smith has defended the order, saying the intent is to keep graphic sexual imagery out of elementary school libraries. “We’re trying to take graphic pornographic images out of elementary schools so that kids are not exposed to age-inappropriate material,” Smith said at a Friday news conference, where she displayed examples she described as inappropriate for young children. Smith accused Edmonton Public Schools of “vicious compliance” with the order, suggesting the division overreached by listing books such as Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale and Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged. https://www.ctvnews.ca/calgary/article/albertas-school-book-removals-spark-backlash-from-educators-authors-students/ Edited September 2, 2025 by CouchPotato Quote

herbie Posted September 2, 2025 Report Posted September 2, 2025 As I tell raw food per enthusiasts: Cooking meat is recognized as one of the biggest evolutionary steps in boosting human brain development. Are you afraid your dog will get smarter than you? Some people are scared too much reading will make their kids smarter than they are. And that is true in their case. 1 Quote

Who is this "they" and what example here are you talking about? 16 hours ago, herbie said: Some people are scared too much reading will make their kids smarter than they are. And that is true in their case. Yeah, that's it! Parents are scared that children reading about how to use a butt plug correctly, or how to use a strap-on dildo, or the gay hookup site Grinder is going to make them smarter than they are. Can you ever argue honestly? Ever? Quote

Danielle Smith did not ban A Handmaid's Tale. One school board decided to, but classic books like that are clearly not what she was talking about. She gave examples of the books they did not think were appropriate in elementary schools, a lot of them graphic novels with things like fellatio portrayed. Do you think that is essential reading in elementary school? The only reason the bill is paused is because they have to revise it to make it more understandable to the people who are being (most likely deliberately) obtuse about it. This is the battle in the states here too. One of the books these leftists are pushing into K-12 schools is just smut, teaching kids how to use a butt plug and how to use Grinder to hook up for gay casual sex. But of course @herbie here thinks this stuff makes kids smarter and parents are just afraid of their kids being smarter. I mean, sure, we could take kids downtown and whore them out as prostitutes too, they would be smarter than their parents on how that industry works too I suppose. 1 Quote

So I went off to answer my own question, because as usual people on here would rather cat fight than discuss. And it's a lot easier to answer why books were banned as there's a process in place. I thought it was clear but the schools/boards wanted to be extra careful so they banned classics like 1984 in case someone saw them as too sexy. Now, they're dialing it back but it seems to be due to optics. Personally I didn't see anything wrong with the original guidelines but hopefully exempting Huxley, Atwood, Salinger will do the trick. The problem is that many parents thought that the books available were beyond the pale, and as with all things cultural... there had to be an unhappy arbitration to solve that. Liberals, take note: this is/was a government solution and it respects freedom of expression as well as parents' rights . Quote Looks like someone has a new patronizing catch phrase ! Michael Hardner

LOL, sure, you have been in at least half a dozen threads with me on the trans agenda and have run away from all of them. You are a culture warrior, its just your tactics are those of obfuscation and deception, like pretending you are not fighting when you are. You just realize you lose in a stand up fight, so these are the tactics you employ. 1 Quote
