SpankyMcFarland Posted April 9 Report Posted April 9 (edited) The secondary gain Trump gets from this is obvious - representatives from the world coming to him personally and begging for a deal. That rewards his vanity and his coffers. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/apr/09/trump-address-republicans-china-tariffs Edited April 9 by SpankyMcFarland Quote
impartialobserver Posted April 9 Report Posted April 9 sometimes I wonder if this is some strange buy low, sell high game. The stock market tanks and then he does something and now metrics go up. He then can tout his remarkably recovery. 1 Quote

Well there's been no remarkable recovery yet, but I kind of see where you're going with that. I think trump had an idea that if he did his tariff plan businesses will begin to move to the us and that the US economy wouldn't take that big a hit. I think the actual results have proven to be slightly different and as people are coming to him now and saying that he is going to drive America into a deeper session if he continues this for any length of time. He's obviously not thrilled about the idea of giving it up entirely but his people have probably explained to him that the markets are already heavily damaged and they need a course correction to prevent it from falling off a cliff and they've suggested that if they negotiate with these countries maybe they can get a better deal and maybe that's good enough. We'll see where it goes from here Quote

We'll see where it goes from here Most likely when the GDP number comes out on April 30, 2025.. it will not look good. A slight decline in GDP will illuminate the cost of this policy in a better way than the stock market. Not that he cares but this policy is going to have a profound impact on the ports in the Western US. Going to see some job losses Quote
Boges Posted April 9 Report Posted April 9 This is exactly what he did with Canada and Mexico. Threatens big tariffs says he won't back down. . . . then backs down. But only temporarily. So we'll be back at this again in a few months. It creates chaos and uncertainty. We can see that even though most Canadian exports are still tariff free, Canadians don't trust the US. The damage is done. This will repeat itself all over the world. Also the fight with China is rough. We often don't realize how much stuff we get from China. 100+% tariffs are going to sting. 1 Quote

I suspect we'll see more stagnation than anything - nobody will be investing if they can avoid it in this climate. Quote

Did you see donald boasting how much his billionaire buddies made as normal folks lost big. Donalds a World class piece of shite, as are all his idi_tic supporters. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwjxx4qS59CMAxX7MEQIHVDEFIkQFnoECDMQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.independent.co.uk%2Ftv%2Fnews%2Ftrump-charles-schwab-stock-market-tariffs-nascar-b2731096.html&usg=AOvVaw2fPZbh2ciuifs2oGMYAVVc&opi=89978449 1 Quote
