CdnFox Posted August 26, 2024 Report Posted August 26, 2024 Nearly half a million Canadians accessing EI as unemployment surges: StatsCan | True North (tnc.news) The number of Canadians receiving Employment Insurance benefits has risen over 10% since the same time last year, according to new data released by Statistics Canada. According to new data released on Thursday, 474,000 Canadians are receiving Employment Insurance benefits, rising 6,000, or 1.3%, since the previous month, marking the second consecutive monthly increase. Statistics Canada attributed the rise in unemployment to “more people search(ing) for work, while overall employment held steady.” However, the more people searching for work were new immigrants to the country. The stagnant availability of jobs drove the rise in unemployment. At the same time, Canada’s population grew by nearly 100,000 between May and June 2024. CdnFox Posted August 26, 2024 Author Report Posted August 26, 2024 So the immigrants can't get work. We've seen how this plays out in other countries. They become frustrated, resentful, and then we get social unrest one way or another. And this is the beginning. NAME REMOVED Posted August 26, 2024 Report Posted August 26, 2024 EI should only be for Canadians who were born in this country. Quote

That would be fine if only people that were born in the country had to pay into it. It's basically insurance, anybody that pays in has to drive a benefit out under the appropriate conditions. So if they have to pay the payroll tax deduction then they should be receiving the benefit Quote There are two types of people in this world: Those who can extrapolate from incomplete data

Life is not fair, and we should make it law, that if you come to Canada, you cannot collect welfare or EI. We can evict them from the country if they cannot find work. Native Canadians should always receive first dibs on jobs. These people are lucky to be here...why should we pay our tax money to give them income while they are freeloading off the backs of people who were born and raised here? Well you can make that argument but then it would be unreasonable to charge them for EI premiums. It's insurance. It would be like saying we should pass a law that requires them to have vehicle insurance to drive on our roads but that they couldn't actually collect any of the insurance if they get into an accident. If you charge an insurance premium then you have to pay out in the event of an insurable loss. And some would argue that the very fact that they're paying income tax and have payroll deductions indicates that they are contributing. What you seem to be suggesting is that all immigrants should pay an additional amount of tax without benefits. I suppose you could charge some sort of landed immigrant fee or additional tax that only applied to non-citizens. And in fact in our history we have done such things, perhaps you will recall the Chinese head tax. I think that is fairly universally regarded as a bad idea though. But it is something you believe in then it's something you believe in, it's logically sound if even if it's not morally sound 1 Quote There are two types of people in this world: Those who can extrapolate from incomplete data

ExFlyer Posted August 27, 2024 Report Posted August 27, 2024 (edited) Of those on EI, 196000 are on maternity or paternity pay outs. 116,000 are on EI for sickness reasons. 6,500 are on EI for care giving reasons. Quebec and Ontario account for over 1/2 the recipients with Alberta and BC in there too. https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/programs/ei/statistics.html EI rates this year are about the average that had been for the past 10 years. @6.4% https://tradingeconomics.com/canada/unemployment-rate When you consider 312,000 of those on are on maternity, paternity and sick...well it don't look so bad for those really needing pogey.
