A new government bill tabled in the House of Commons on Thursday would allow Canadians to pass citizenship rights down to their children born outside the country — a move that would add an unknown number of new citizens.

In 2009, former Conservative prime minister Stephen Harper's government changed the law so that Canadian parents who were born abroad could not pass down their citizenship, unless their child was born in Canada."

This could be controversial because it could mean immigrants who came to Canada, obtained citizenship and lived here for at least 3 years and then moved back to their original country and remained there for many years and had children there.  They may be Canadian citizens of convenience. Their children born in that other country could now claim Canadian citizenship even if they and their parents do not live in Canada.  That is the way I understand it.  I could be wrong.  But if it is true, it would seem that if they lived in some other country and at some point need medical care, all they would to do is come to Canada and claim it.  What about other social services such as old age pensions, etc.?

Oh lookie-loo! While way down in the polls, a Liberal-appointed Ontario judge has suddenly found a whole bunch more votes for the Liberals ahead of next year's election.  Astonished!

But i'm kidding, the Liberals would never do something so...cynical and self-serving.

I caught a glimpse of this on the news and the minister announcing it said that they would have to prove they had some species of substantial tie with Canada still. But I have no idea what that even means.

They are obviously trying to win the immigrant vote but quite frankly I suspect this will honk immigrants off

The original selection criteria has to change. Canada needs to give priority to adoptability. It means less immigrants from Middle East. Africa and Indian subcontinent who do not share the Canadian way of life and more from Europe and South America. And deport those who come here and have their loyalties somewhere else, like Hamas or Palestine. I hope the next conservative government take the right steps on immigration.
