eureka contended recently that the "flags of convenience" attack on Paul Martin is the sleaziest thing he has ever seen in politics. Well, I think this item ups the ante in a big way:

http://andrewcoyne.com/2006/01/latest-liberal-attack.php

Tuesday night on Shaw Cable, a caller phoned in falsely accusing front-runner Conservative incumbent MP Maurice Vellacott of sexually assaulting his church secretary at North Park Church. The technicians who have no 7 second delay cut the call off. Vellacott responded quickly by looking directly into the camera, stating to the technicians that he needed to get the name and phone number of that caller for defamation proceedings.

After the cable show ended, Vellacott was handed the requested phone number by Shaw Cable producer Gracie Field. Upon arrival back at his campaign office he was told that a person had reported in and was 100% confident that it was the voice of George Laliberte. The caller maliciously and falsely accused Vellacott of being “removed from North Park Church because you were charged with sexual assault” on his church secretary. Laliberte is a friend of Chris Axworthy’s and apparently owes Axworthy some favours. When the ... number provided by the Shaw Cable staff member was dialed, it was found to be Chris Axworthy’s campaign office phone number.

Vellacott has never been accused by any woman of sexual assault and was never a Pastor at North Park Church or ever in attendance there.

the Liberals will follow suit of US Democrats and start telling people that Harper will burn down black chruches if elected.

Geez, I hadn't heard this one.

Shocking.

A black Democrat outside of St. Louis, MO got caught with it printed on campaign ad in 2004. And guess what ... not even disciplined by his party!

Ran and lost by a landslide. Not surpising in the heartland though. Republicans dominate there.

And I hope with the serious money he wins in that lawsuit, he gives to charity.

BTW: Who is so stupid to do that with their home phone? Go to a payphone...

No kidding, if your going to do that, at least do it right.

This candidate should withdraw from the race or not be allowed to sit as a Liberal when elected. People need to start taking responsibility for their actions and those that work for them.

These are not payed employees. They are volunteers.

Did the Conservatives drop out fo the entire provincial election because a moron in their ranks authorized an ad calling Dalton McGuinty a vicious kitten eater?

According to your logic, they should ahve just dropped it.

Wait a minute...I've forgotten one very crucial fact here. The current sexual assault idiocy involves a Liberal. When it's the Liberals, it's time to tack responsibility for one's own actions.

When it's a Conservative, well....you know...let's just forget about it. Kids will be kids. The employee didn't reflect the intentions of the party.

Once again, partisan hypocrisy at it's worst.

I would think anybody over about 6 years old knows that "kitten eater" is a joke.

And anybody over the age of about 13 knows that sexual assault is an accusation that's taken with the utmost seriousness in this country.

It's no exaggeration to state that had it not been disproven immediately, this accusation could have had disasterous effect on Mr Vellacott's reputation and his election campaign.

If Mr Vellacott pursues legal action over this, he'll have a strong case. Try convincing a judge to take an accusation of "kitten eater" seriously, Boru.

I think eatting Kittens was legalized by the last government... not sure though.

Has the candidate been linked directly to this incident? If so, what has been the party's reponse? I haven't heard anything about this in the MSM...

Here's the latest, geoffrey.

Axworthy concedes the call was made from his campaign office, but says he believes somebody unconnected with his campaign snuck into his office and used the phone. (perhaps it was the Liberal mole? )

The ongoing coverage at Coyne's blog, however, says that someone notified Vellacott that they recognized the caller's voice as that of George Laliberte, who is apparently known to be Axworthy's associate, crony, henchman, confrere, or similar.

Thanks Kimmy. Any relation between this Axworthy and the Lloyd?

I think we also have to be fair, even to the Liberals, and say that because someone thinks that the voice belongs to one of Axworthy's friends, doesn't necessarily mean that. It could very well have been someone that snuck in.

However, this means that someone saw the debate on TV, ran over to the office, placed the call. Pretty crazy. I'm willing to accept in the mean time though that it was an unrelated person.

So campaign offices are left wide open so any one can sneak in and use the phone - don't think so. If you call a phone in show you are usually on hold for a while, then you talk to the screener, then you go on. This isn't a quck one minute phone call, he would have been noticed.

This is another indication that the liberals are running scared, that along with Martin furiously painting Harper as a socon which he clearly is not. Its being discussed on CFRB now, but you know, once the seeds of distrust are planted, people start to distrust. This incident is about the sleaziest on record.

Harper did well on CBC TV panel. This so-called random panel and questions were clearly all aimed at attacking him and the party, but he handled it well and never lost his cool. A lot of the questioners were clearly unhappy that he didn't respond to their bait the way that they wanted him to.

I wonder if Martin is regretting making it such a long election campaign.

Martin simpy defines the word sleaze, but maybe the voters are buying into it, fear and smear works.

Northing like playing to the anti American crowd, and not he's trying to play the anti Albertan anti west card.

MacKay can’t help the East, PM warns

Deputy Tory leader called no match for the Calgary cabal

Nova Scotians can’t trust Peter MacKay to look after their interests in a Conservative government, says Paul Martin, because scary right-wing Albertans will be running the show.

"Peter MacKay doesn’t really count," the prime minister said in a phone interview from Ontario on Thursday.

"All of Stephen Harper’s advisers come from Calgary. They come from where he is. Peter MacKay is not going to be the person who’s going to be deciding."

Mr. Martin is a desperate man saying desperate things at the end of a losing battle, says Mr. MacKay.

Just amazing the levels Martin will sink to.

BTW ... does Preparation H work on Grits? might it make their poll numbers shrink?

Partisanship aside, how f-ing stupid do you have to be to call in and randomly accuse someone of sexual assault.

Honestly?

Pretty stupid, and he was on hold for 12 minutes LOL guess this wasn't some homeless guy looking to stay warm....

"Liberals...very favorite taunt: Hypocrisy! Hypocrisy is the only sin that really inflames them. Inasmuch as liberals have no morals, they can sit back and criticize other people for failing to meet the standards that liberals simply renounce. It's an intriguing strategy. By openly admitting to being philanderers, draft dodgers, liars, weasels and cowards, liberals avoid ever being hypocrites." -- Ann Coulter
