  1. I'm in prison regularly as presently 95% of my practice is crminal and appellate law. Recently, I have been involved with a high volume of cases where I act for inmates facing internal disciplinary hearings for breaking rules while in jail. I also have a current case pending for a Queen's Bench judicial review of the treatment of an inmate at the Calgary Correctional Centre. I consider my opinion to be a relatively well-informed one. I repeat, I'm no lefty when it comes to crime and punishment (in spite of being a criminal defence lawyer), and I'm not losing any sleep over the fact that conditions are harsh for most inmates. All I am saying is that conditions are harsh for most inmates and the notion that prisoners have a more comfortable life than people on the outside is largely fictitious. Go to any large urban centre and look at the number of homeless people living on the streets or in shelters...the numbers are often staggering. Many of these same people have seen the inside of a jail or two in their day, and if it was as good as so many Canadians seem to think (becuase they don't use chain gangs anymore) then all of those people would be on the inside...not barely surviving on the curb-side. Freedom is totally taken for granted by those who have it and disparagingly unattainable for those who have lost it by committing a crime...and the lack of the "luxuries" of prison is of no consequence to a street-dweller because he has the far more valuable asset of being free. Sorry if I got a bit tangental there, but I'm just trying to give perspective to those who assume that a few privileges automatically mean that prison life is better than the ones the rest of us lead. FTA This is true, but a fact largely ignored by the right wing press. Constant nonsense about the regular inmate having access to golf courses and sex toys... The sort that gets locked up for tax evasion and white collar crime definately tend to sing a different tune after they spend their 2 weeks in jail for defrauding the public of millions of dollars.
  2. Another Trudeau to screw Alberta is your point fo view. To some, people say ALberta's greed does itself in. Interesting perspective about Albertas greed. Do you fell that Alberta gets more than its share of federal resources, is too greedy in that regard? Or do you feel that the amount that Alberta contributes to federalism is inadequate? I'm genuinely curious. I agree with that question. 80+ years of Conservative rule and Alberta has a great economy, minimal corruption, a great working ethic, and a stupendous degree of personal responsibility. After 12+ years of Liberal rule, Canada has loads os scandal, no armed forces, and no respect around the world. Sounds to me like Canada is doing itself in, not Alberta. No respect around the world? You must be blind. Or ignorant, but you've already proven yourself to be that on many occasions, so what's the point of beating that dead stick. AS for no corruption in Alberta, you are kidding me. It's not the same kind of governemnt corruption, granted, but there is a backlog of rigfs violations cases against the Alberta government that would put the State of Texas to shame. Whether it's same sex rights, racial minority rights, or women's rights, ALberta's government has complaints registered aginst it in all those areas. Again, you are full of it. Boru, 1) Most people around the world do not know what to think about Canada... 2) "Rights" violations are a thin line and not in the same league as the Liberals buying a majority in the 1997 election. "Corruption" is not an issue of the left or right, whereas "rights" violations could be nothing more than affirmative action cases the left uses with its imposition of these reverse discrimination policies on our society. If you have a specific case, I'd review it... I think you are full of it and you twist facts around. I have proven that a clear majority of Canadians support the death penalty, that "rights violations" are different from corruption, and that a majority of people in foreign countries have no opinion of Canada. I was wrong to state that that hospital had a sauna and I admitted my mistake. Do you admit it when you twist the facts around Boru? TML, you are a complete and absoltue liar. You did not prove that Canadians support the death penalty. You just said it as if it werefact, and that, apparantly, is enough. You say rights violations are different from corruption. Thatis a matter of your opinion, and a very warped opinion it is. Human rights abuses are the worst kind of corruption, and the only reason you downplay them is becauyse it is your government that is most guilty of them. Your government is guilt of human rights abuses that have been settles for decades. WOmen and racial minorities. I do not twist facts, you do. Wrse than that, you simply lie through your rotten yellow teeth, and that's the worst kind of twisting. You have proven I am full of it? How so? Because I dare to object to your ramblings and rants? You are pathetic, and continue to paint yourself as such wth every passing day, with such nonsense as Canadians supportign the death penalty, complete fiction, and then your idiotic wet dreams of you going out on the streets and debating down those nbasty leftwing hippies that plague Canada. Grow up, get out of your basement and get some fresh air. It smells good, and it'll clear your head. Your delusional sense of self grandeur is truly sad.

  4. Just the opposite. This is another thread in the right web of deceit and fear monger. That's all you're doing, fear mongering, to justify military buildup. Rather pathetic. They haven't hit us. If they wanted to, they could have easily done so. That is evdence enough that is is peopel like YOU who are lying, not me. left lie? Please. The evidence is on our side, while yours looks, as is always the case with you, like compelte and total fiction.
  5. YankAbroad, Even the socialist NDP leader in this country got private surgery (he said he didn't it was private but like all gov't hospitals this one had a bar, a sauna, a fancy restaurant, and a pool... ) When the only leader in the country who hasn't used private care is the conservative one, you know it is about time we ended the in-name-only health monopoly)... What's with you and fiction TML? Are you deficient in the ability to stick to the truth? Or are you just a born liar? The clinic Jack Layton went to was covered by OHIP, thus he had to go thorugh the nrmal public queues, thus undermining your entire argument. And then you make yourself look that much worse with that blurb about a sauna, etc... Not only do you omit the facts, but you twist the lies you throw out even further. Read what you post, I'm telling you, any undecided voters who read through these forums will read what you write and then be scared off to the communist party of Canada, just tog et aw far away from your lunacy as possible. Boru, Your hypocrisy is telling considering that if I twist the facts around to my POV, you are doing the same. Prime Minister Harper is the only federal leader who has never used healthcare that was in a private clinic. According to the Shouldice Hospital website, in their hospital "you will find a billiard room, shuffleboard table, TV lounge, a common area to play cards, and a beautiful solarium for lounging and reading. Outside there are 20 acres of landscaped grounds to stroll about, including a putting green." Don't tell me a socialist leader isn't going to think that this is not for the "common guy" he claims to represent. You can swim in your insults all you want. I understand your frustration...the left lost. They are done...finished this time. I felt the same way in 2004. In the meantime, you can enjoy your tax cuts, Canada's military will enjoy its funding increases, and Canada will enjoy a better, more respected position in the world. I notice you didn't mention a sauna, which is what I called you on... coincidence?
  6. I'm never speechless. Emotional arguments win no sympathy from me. Landmines are no different than any other weapon when used responsibly. I disagree. Landmines should be completely banned at the manufacturing stage. They are one of the few weapons that can never be used responsibly. I agree that they cannot be used responsibly. But, they are most defiately not the only weapon that cannot be used responsibly.

  8. LOL excellent! And so he should. All you conservatives frothing at the mouth because there's no current leader... pfffft. Be patient -- it'll happen. You never know, the left and the centre could unite.... Layton as Liberal leader? Can you imagine the debates? I can just see Prime Minister Harper looking at Layton in shock after Layton thought there was a difference between the principal-agent theory and agency costs. You know, it says a lot that NDP voters want Layton to bail to the Liberals now... On second thought, Layton waited years to be opposition leader...if he becomes Liberal leader, he can be on the opposition benches for years... Ahahahahahah.....whoa, my belly is about to burst form laughter. I'm telling you, between your weak jokes and your fictional stories...you're too much for me TML. The Conservatives win the weakest mandate in the history of Canada, and you're calling the Liberals the opposition for years? Wait and see. All it'll take is a solid leader for the Liberals to win back the Ontario countryside. Conservatives were not voted in for their ideals, nor were they voted in for Stephen Harper. That much ahs been made clear.
  9. Bill Grahman isn't much of a leader. Kind of seems like a big baby in my opinion. Bug hypocrite for sure but I would have to see his platform again... Hypocrite...and harper isn't? His entire campaign..... never mind. No getting through to some people...
  10. If you're going to make up a little story, at least make it entertaining. This is pathetic. Quite the stereotype youtry to paint ther. Canadian drinking, flag waving, multiculturalist, etc... You really should'nt start down that road. The stereotypes that are flung around regarding people with your ideological thinking are pretty fierce these days. If Canada is attacked, then we'll deal with it then. But why ahven't we been? Spain, England, the United States have all suffered dreadful attacks that have scared their populations into boarding up their doors. Of those countries, Canada, by far, has the least security measures in place. Why have the subways of Toronto or Montreal not been firebombed? Honestly, pull your head out of your ass. Get some fresh air. Clear your head. For gods sake, don't spam these boards with your fictional stories of you crusading the Conservative cause around town and debating those commies away.
  11. Then I don't see the big deal with the CBC having a bias. Truth is, the media must be made aware of, and accountable for, the influence they carry over the public. They influence the public immensely. This comes down to a public good vs freedom of expression debate. My instinct is the same as yours, that the press should be able to write what they please, but having seen the influence they carry, and the fact that the media is by nature going to carry a right leaning bias because media are corporate identities, I really don't know what is best. What do you think?
  12. Another Trudeau to screw Alberta is your point fo view. To some, people say ALberta's greed does itself in.
  13. I think this gives a fantastic opportunity for the grassroots to elect a new leader based on merit and leadership, rather than having payed his dues by buying supporters for a certain length of time.
  14. Is that so? Show me an article. I don't believe you. I believe that to be nonsense. After spending the good part of a term in criminology discussing and arguing the merits of the death penalty with two hundred equally interested criminology students, these points became clear: 1) The Canadian public does not support it, and every year support dwindes. Polls outside of select regions consistantly have shown these same results for over two decades. 2) The death penalty has a yet to be proven as a deterrant. Although there is no concensus upon reasoning for it, the opposite has been shown to be true.
