The government rang up a $769-million bill to provide free hotel rooms and meals for refugees and illegal immigrants this year, according to the Department of Immigration.

Manseau didn’t detail how many refugee applicants and illegal immigrants were accommodated at $769 million.

“Where are you putting these people?” asked Sen. Larry Smith (Que.).

“Leases with the different hotels,” replied Manseau.

“How long do people stay in these facilities?” asked Sen. Smith.

“It varies from a few weeks to a few months,” replied Manseau.

And that does not Include any medical services or any other services. We are spending billions on these people while our own people are going without and it all drives up inflation. And even better - some of those immigrants still had to sleep on the streets because there wasn't enough housing.

I understand that there are people in the world who are suffering and need a home, but maybe we need to worry about our own people till we have enough homes for them before letting others come.

Here in Ottawa we have hotels full of refugees for the past 3 years. Hotel and per diems.

The refugees are complaining they do not like it. LOL   I wonder if it is better than the camps they came from?

Do you mean that we should put them in a tent egoist? We have to build apartments, find them a job and keep them in Canada

One thing I can't understand is why nobody is explaining the root cause of this increase in refugees. We never used to allow people to board planes to Canada without valid documentation and that seems to me to be the problem.

What changed?

It was entirely political - our caps in the past were choices, not a lack of refugees in the world.  But - at the same time the syrian war and other conflicts displaced hundreds of thousands of people, many of whom fled to europe to the point where europe became overwhelmed. I'm sure you recall the stories about the massive refugee camps in france and germany and other countries and the problems that were arising.

So - just as Justin was coming into power the world had a surplus of migrants and he was under a lot of pressure from the left to take more refugees, a LOT more. As you may recall it was a major campaign issue in 2015 and we had that picture of the young dead boy who washed up on the shores driving an emotional demand to double the amount of refugees.

The problem was we had perfected the refugee integration process using a combination of mentors and sponsors backed by an extensive support system that got them in country - integrated enough to function- and out working and earning their way very effectively and quickly.  But it was a complex system that could NOT be expanded quickly, and the increase very quickly overwhelmed it.

Poilievre's wife is a South American immigrant, so if Poilievre wants to send immigrants home, his wife would have to kick him out of her home, deny him the right to see his children, take his prime minister's salary and all his savings.

They have documentation. They just flush it down the toilet before arriving. We've also removed the need for visas for certain countries due to political pressure (Ie Romania, Mexico). On top of that we've greatly expanded the reasons for a valid claim. They now include claims impossible to verify or dispute, such as being gay or trans.
