The implicit protection you speak of (the NATO umbrella) was Putin’s pretence for starting the war.

They are just buying time.

The longer this lasts at a stand still, the better for Russia as they have yet to fully lose any negotiating power.  

Can't wait for leadership change in the US with common sense to stop pumping billions in this avoidable war.
