Not true. Canada designed and built all its own destroyers and frigates from the 50's to the present Halifax class.

Very true...last decade...no navy ships.

Canada has lost the ability to design and build competent warships...more importantly and alarming, Canada has lost the will to do so.

Ideal hospital ships for our many humanitarian missions.

Nah....Canada prefers to spend more money on used junk from other nations.   Except for those CC-177s that Harper bought over Liberal objections.   Smart move....

Aye...the good old days when we were #3 Navy-wise.

Only in number of ships. We were a small ship navy. A couple of escort carriers and two heavy cruisers were our largest WW2 ships.

They were both at fire sale prices that even Egypt could afford...

But, yes...Canada Joe Bidened that up as well.

Yes...a real force that would need to be dealt with rather than brushed-off as insignificant. Like...say...the Red Chinese view us now.

Must be frustrating for Canadian Forces....rusty trucks...rusting submarines...corroding CF-188s...leased mongrel supply ships...museum grade rotary winged aircraft...a long list.

We need actual combat ships that can operate in the Arctic more.

Who says they can't? Russia commissioned them...an Artic nation. The Mistral is a very capable jeep carrier.

Destroyers, frigates and corvettes. No subs. Probably not.

Don't get me started. First let's talk about Canada's incorporation into the US military...

Seeing that it's history...yeah, it did. We were the sub hunters...not the subs. Good ones, too.

Trudeau Sr killed the Navy off.

I used to work with some ex Argus guys. They used to say that if you wanted to find a sub, just look for the column of smoke from the destroyer it just torpedoed.

Won't work...Canada has old radios and data links !

Seriously, that extra layer of command is always a bother. But my fellow Canadians have that hockey attitude.

Treat you guys like we treat the RCMP, only the Army...heh. What's the bill from the Pentagon?

The "funny" thing is that more Canadians were embarrassed by the inability to move DART to disaster areas like Indonesia and Haiti than anything military.   Harper got the heavy airlift for that and the chronic leasing of resources from Ukraine and others for A-stan.

Canada's submarine fleet spent 'zero days' at sea last year: government documents

All four of Canada's submarines were tied up last year for repairs and maintenance — news that has the opposition Conservatives questioning whether the Liberal government can keep the second-hand fleet afloat for another two decades.

In response to a written question before Parliament, the Department of National Defence said the boats "spent zero days at sea" in 2019, but three of the four would return to service at some point this year.
