Quote It goes on and on through painful chapter after painful chapter cataloguing, in great detail, highlighting failure after failure by the Harper government to address everything from biological diversity and the conservation of migratory birds to Recovery Planning for Species at Risk and Ecological integrity of National Parks. http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/john-mckay/harper-environmental-record_b_4268229.html Quote The Fisheries Act no longer protects most fish. The Navigable Waters Protection Act no longer protects most lakes and rivers. The federal Environmental Assessment Act was repealed in its entirety and replaced with a law so cursory it might as well have been drafted on a cocktail napkin. Canada remains the only country in the world that signed the Kyoto agreement on carbon pollution, only to withdraw from the treaty. Even the impressive environmental achievements of previous Conservative governments have been dismantled, such as the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy. https://www.thestar.com/opinion/commentary/2014/07/31/stephen_harper_the_environments_best_friend.html Quote

eyeball Posted December 23, 2016 Report Posted December 23, 2016 The Navigable Waters Protection Act is for protecting shipping from anything that impedes a vessel's ability to navigate like bridges, dams, fish farms etc. You need to get permission from the government to do so. As I recall from applications I had to make to Transport Canada for aquaculture permits there were sections of the act that also imposed some restrictions on shipping. Perhaps some of these were scrapped to make things easier for oil tankers. Otherwise the Act is still very much in force. Thankfully however there appear to be lots of activists willing to protect them so...
