It is interesting you picked mining, an industry replete with examples of destroying the environment. When a company can open up, create massive tailing ponds

You are speaking about a problem with the environmental rules. If you don't like the rules, then campaign to change the rules. This country was built on exploitation of natural resources. It is wealthy largely because of that.

It goes on and on through painful chapter after painful chapter cataloguing, in great detail, highlighting failure after failure by the Harper government to address everything from biological diversity and the conservation of migratory birds to Recovery Planning for Species at Risk and Ecological integrity of National Parks.

The Fisheries Act no longer protects most fish.

The Navigable Waters Protection Act no longer protects most lakes and rivers.

The federal Environmental Assessment Act was repealed in its entirety and replaced with a law so cursory it might as well have been drafted on a cocktail napkin.

Canada remains the only country in the world that signed the Kyoto agreement on carbon pollution, only to withdraw from the treaty.

Even the impressive environmental achievements of previous Conservative governments have been dismantled, such as the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy.

They tried to destroy the means to protect it, monitor it and diminish our capacity to understand the changes that are taking place. Ignorance has always played well to the agenda of economic extremism.

Where did you get the erroneous fact our lakes are not environmentally protected from?

Harper tore up the Navigable Waters Protection Act in one of his scum sucking omnibus bills.

The Navigable Waters Protection Act is for protecting shipping from anything that impedes a vessel's ability to navigate like bridges, dams, fish farms etc. You need to get permission from the government to do so.

As I recall from applications I had to make to Transport Canada for aquaculture permits there were sections of the act that also imposed some restrictions on shipping. Perhaps some of these were scrapped to make things easier for oil tankers.

Otherwise the Act is still very much in force.

They're nowhere near as protected as they were...which wasn't saying a lot.

Thankfully however there appear to be lots of activists willing to protect them so...
