Michael Hardner Posted November 27, 2015 Report Posted November 27, 2015 A Saskatchewan coroner has refused to allow the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies to participate in the inquest into the controversial death of an aboriginal woman in a federal prison hospital.James died on Jan. 20, 2013, in the Regional Psychiatric Centre, a prison hospital in Saskatoon. The 35-year-old was from Winnipeg and nearing the end of a 15-year-sentence. She had been transferred to Saskatoon from the Grand Valley Institution for Women in Ontario after speaking out about guards who she said were smuggling in goods in exchange for sexual favours. "This is beyond shocking to us," said Kim Pate, executive director of the association, adding that it's the first time the group has ever been denied standing at an inquest. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/kinew-james-inquest-aboriginal-prison-death-1.3339087 I'm convinced that future generations will look at our generation's neglect of prisons as a moral failing, much as we look at racial discrimination in the recent past. Our reactionary culture has determined that prisoners are irredeemable and that imprisonment is the answer to social problems, but we don't want to think about the morality of all of this too much. Big Guy Posted November 27, 2015 Report Posted November 27, 2015 To have our system work, we are going to have to decide if it is set up for rehabilitation or for punishment. Trying to do both is doing neither. Quote Note - For those expecting a response from Big Guy: I generally do not read or respond to posts longer then 300 words nor to parsed comments.

ReeferMadness Posted November 27, 2015 Report Posted November 27, 2015 We have 2 major adversarial institutions - criminal law and party politics. Both are in a constant state of disrepute. I don't think that's a coincidence. Smeelious Posted November 27, 2015 Report Posted November 27, 2015 Explain how doing both is a problem. I'd wager in most cases both is required even. You really can't have one without the other. Quote

This sort of neglect is just one more thing amongst a plethora of moral failings associated with our institutions, and above all else their transparency and accountability. Careful, now. You're dangerously close to disagreeing with "hang-em-high" Harper. Argus Posted November 27, 2015 Report Posted November 27, 2015 Careful, now. You're dangerously close to disagreeing with "hang-em-high" Harper. I'm all for hammering the hell out of violent offenders, but I'm also all for providing first rate mental health and addiction treatment to people who are either inside or outside prisons.
