Boges Posted October 28, 2015 Report Posted October 28, 2015 (edited) This may not be terribly debatable but you guys surprise me with how you take an issue and carry it for several pages. http://deadspin.com/only-one-other-royal-was-told-about-edinson-volquezs-fa-1739149153 When Edinson Volquez came out after six innings, his wife and children were waiting for him in the clubhouse. GM Dayton Moore gave them the use of the manager’s office, where they could be alone and discuss whatever they needed to. It still isn’t clear whether Volquez knew yet that his father had died earlier in the day—but for the small handful of Royals coaches and players that were told before the game started or found out while it was still in progress, it weighed heavily. Volquez’s wife Roandy contacted Moore shortly before the start of the game and asked that the team not tell Edinson that 63-year-old Danio Volquez had passed away in the Dominican Republic from complications from heart disease. Moore passed the word to manager Ned Yost. Yost understands that some might think it’s weird to keep that kind of news from a person, but he never hesitated. “I don’t feel bad,” Yost said. “I love Eddie Volquez and if his family asked me to do something, I’m going to do it.” Yost did have to tell one player. On the chance Volquez found out about his father and decided he couldn’t pitch, the Royals needed a backup starter. That fell to Chris Young, in line to start Game 4. Young, Yost knew, had lost his own father, to cancer, on Sept. 26. Young went out the next day and pitched before flying home to be with his family. People who have been following the Jays run know who this pitcher is. I know playing in the World Series is the dream of every baseball player. But you should be able to do so fully informed. The wife specifically asked the coach not to tell Volquez so that he would pitch with a clear mind. I don't think that was the right choice. Perhaps he couldn't have pitched because of emotional distress. But perhaps he could have performed well as a tribute to his father, that decision was taken away from him. I don't agree with it. Ultimately whatever reaction he had is the right one, it's his life. But I'd be quite angry had people not told me something important so I could do something for them ignorant of the the reality of the situation. Thoughts? Edited October 28, 2015 by Boges Quote
overthere Posted October 28, 2015 Report Posted October 28, 2015 The team respected the request of the mans spouse. It is between them and my opinion means nothing. Quote Science too hard for you? Try religion!
bush_cheney2004 Posted October 28, 2015 Report Posted October 28, 2015 (edited) Thoughts ? Royals are leading the series 1 - 0. Just because the Royals manager and coaches complied with the family's request does not mean Volquez didn't learn of his father's death by other means prior to the start of the game. No harm...no foul. Edited October 28, 2015 by bush_cheney2004 Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
