http://www.cbc.ca/news/trending/andrew-coyne-resigns-editor-national-post-1.3278149

This has been strongly hinted at since word leaked out that his editorial piece supporting someone other than the Postmedia's preferred Conservative re-election. I'm sure Coyne will land on his feet elsewhere, and the National Post will continue its decline into the preferred newspaper of cranky rich old white men. Maybe they can complete that transition by giving the job to Rex Murphy, Barbara Kay or Conrad Black.

So the Star is paper for deluded fools with no understanding of how the economy works?

I agree. Time to give the job to someone who isn't a left-wing hack.

I used to have respect for Rex Murphy but in the past few years he's made less and less sense. Last year he penned this piece of tripe in which he came to the conclusion that because Trudeau was going to enforce party discipline on the issue of abortion, there was no longer any place in the Liberal Party for Christians.

Unlimited economic growth has the marvelous quality of stilling discontent while preserving privilege, a fact that has not gone unnoticed among liberal economists.

Everyone who doesn't bow to Harper is a left-wing hack? :D :D

Coyne's views could best be described as Libertarian - both socially and economically. There is nothing left wing about him.

Or do you mean that everyone who has personal integrity is automatically left wing?

Left-wingers by definition have no integrity.

It's exactly this kind of hyperbolic nonsense that ticks me off about hyper-conservative.s

I mean seriously, do you actually believe what you wrote, and if you do, what should I gather about your own integrity and honesty?

Not hyperbole. It's a core tennet. Taking from others by rule of force, and making them pay for things they don't want. Go left, you get more of that, go right, you get less.

All governments have and all governments always will collect taxes. It is the only way a society of any size could ever function.

Your point is spurious, biased, and fundamentally absurd. It's deliberately inflammatory for no other reason than arrogance and ignorance.

Adults can disagree with other adults on matters of economics and politics without this sort of pathetic infantile gutter talk.

He's also fairly hawkish on foreign affairs. One would have to be a completely blinkered Tory partisan to describe Coyne as a left-wing hack.

As I said a day or two ago, Coyne is a Classical Liberal. If you want to see the model for someone like Coyne, think of the Whigs of 18th and early 19th century Britain, or of William Gladstone. Calling Coyne a "lefty" is absurd.

And the more left they are, the more you have to watch your wallet. If this is news to you, you have not been paying attention.

I applaud Coyne for sticking to his principles, yet the timing of this resignation is suspicious. I mean, he announced his resignation on election day. Could he have not waited until tomorrow to announce this? Is he using this resignation as political traction, the same way the National Post canned his article for political traction?

idk about that. If he really wanted to do this for political traction, he would have announced yesterday and released his column. I haven't seen it yet (and lots of twitter followers have asked to see it).

That's a good point.

I think he was negotiating to stay on as a columnist at NP, but step down as editor (rather than outright quit). He likely had to tread carefully until he had it in writing.
