WestCoastRunner Posted July 8, 2015 Report Posted July 8, 2015 Ok, so I've been on the path of days gone by after viewing the concerts of Glastonbery of 2015 and it drew me to reflect on the concerts featuring artists who are no longer with us. I viewed this concert of Janis Joplin's rendition of Ball and Chain in Monterey and it sadly reminded me also of Amy Winehouse. It was a fabulous performance. If you watch it towards the end, you can see Mama Cass being blown away by the performance. Does anyone of any other recalls of those concerts back in the day. AngusThermopyle Posted July 8, 2015 Report Posted July 8, 2015 Not exactly those days but I did see Queen twice back in the seventies, once for the News of the World tour and also the Jazz tour. Saw Yes, Tormato. Saw Jethro Tull for the Bursting Out and Stormwatch tours. Saw AC/DC for their first NA tour. The list goes on. This is why I laugh when I hear people declare Kanye West talented or a genius, they no not of what they speak. Quote I yam what I yam - Popeye
Big Guy Posted July 8, 2015 Report Posted July 8, 2015 Saw Elvis Presley concert in Toronto in 1957. "Saw" him because I couldn't hear what he was singing. Tried again in 1964 with the Beatles - same place - Maple Leaf Gardens - Saw them too and couldn't hear any singing over the screaming. Have not attended a musical pop concert since, the ringing in the ears stopped a few years ago. Quote Note - For those expecting a response from Big Guy: I generally do not read or respond to posts longer then 300 words nor to parsed comments.

Saw Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Dylan, Clapton, etc, at big outdoor venues and really didn't get to experience much at all. It's the smaller concerts that stick in the memory, due, I suppose, as much to their intimacy as the music. David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust tour. George Thorogood at a local Uni before anyone knew his name. The Clash at the same type of venue. SAHB, three or four times. Edited July 9, 2015 by bcsapper Quote

Sorry to hear, that, but amazing you saw them in those very early years! Quote "All generalizations are false, including this one." - Mark Twain Partisanship is a disease of the intellect.

I remember watching this concert with my dad (on TV): I was hooked ever since. And talk about man spreading! Geez! But I ain't complaining! This is 50 minutes of the concert: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QlliHSRh0A If you start watching at 43 minutes, you'll see a fabulous performance. Michael Hardner Posted July 11, 2015 Report Posted July 11, 2015 Seeing both Elvis and The Beatles.... sounds like great memories even if the music wasn't audible at times. Quote Click to learn why Climate Change is caused by HUMANS Michael Hardner
Canada_First Posted July 12, 2015 Report Posted July 12, 2015 All these people are drug addicts and drunks. I don't see why anyone should hold them in any kind of high regard. They are just rich junkies pretty much. If they didn't sing or play instruments they'd just be poor junkies and probably victimizing society in some way. Quote

I saw Joplin live a few months before she died. She had an astonishing raw power and emotion, a paint peeling whiskey voice that came from her heart and guts. If some of these current pretenders actually heard her sing, they'd have to quit in embarassment over their own lack of passion. Coincidentally, I saw a wonderful feature length theater documentary about Winehouse last week, called Amy. I did not know her music until then, and she has some of what Joplin had- personal investment. It is a sad and tragic story, and well worth seeing. Quote Science too hard for you? Try religion!

I heard a great interview about Amy on CBC radio the other day and I wish I could remember who the guy was but he said when she sings a cover she re-interprets it so you feel like you are listening to it for the first time. Not many artists can do that.No other female artist has come close to Janis. Imo. Edited July 30, 2015 by WestCoastRunner Quote I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels.
