Smallc Posted July 7, 2015 Report Posted July 7, 2015 Hooray for 417 million dollar deficits, caving into the kennedys by having an extra billion dollar power line down the wrong side of the lake and an 8% pst!! I have a road I need pavement put back in that probably depends on them getting elected. It's a selfish decision. blueblood Posted July 7, 2015 Report Posted July 7, 2015 I'll grant that it was probably not the wisest idea for Ashton to go ahead and make public pronouncements on international issues on her own via social media before there was an official party statement.Just like its not wise for other mps saying other foolish stuff. It's not that her position is legally policy the way it is for the cabinet, it's that like with any party, as an important member, her unchallenged statements are not something that can be dismissed as just talk. cybercoma Posted July 7, 2015 Report Posted July 7, 2015 They put her in that position. She's obviously authorized to speak for the NDP. What makes you think she was speaking FOR the NDP here and not as a Greek woman? Quote

I really don't mind the NDP that much...what they're doing to hydro though...I'm not so eager to see my rates go up. That's it.It is controversial in that shes saying essentially its all right to not pay your debts when other people are essentially bankrolling your lifestyle. Its like waiting to get paid back for loaning your friend a couple hundred bucks and finding out they went on vacation! cybercoma Posted July 7, 2015 Report Posted July 7, 2015 Its pretty hard to pay back debt if you dont cut back, ask the liberals! This isn't personal finances. This is a national economy. It's impossible to pay back if you can't invest in things that will help the economy grow and get money into the hands of those who will signal demand. Quote

cybercoma Posted July 7, 2015 Report Posted July 7, 2015 Like zimbabwe and post ww1 germany? Ireland took their bath, now its greeces turn. You bring up post WWI Germany like post WWII Germany wasn't given one the largest debt reliefs in the history of the world, backed in part by Greece and Spain both. Quote
blueblood Posted July 7, 2015 Report Posted July 7, 2015 You bring up post WWI Germany like post WWII Germany wasn't given one the largest debt reliefs in the history of the world, backed in part by Greece and Spain both. Post ww1 germany tried to take a shortcut out by printing money and a fat lot of good it did them. As for debt forgiveness in 1953, not all the debt was forgiven and it was a strategic move with influence from the usa to essentially buy west germany as an ally in the cold war. Essentially like credit card companies and clients having to come to some sort of agreement to reshape the debt so that something gets paid. I can see your point on something having to be negotiated like ireland keeping its 12.5% corporate tax rate. However the party is over in greece and there will be some austerity to cover the debt costs yet allow for as you said ability to grow economy to pay off said debt. Perhaps we might be seeing some naval bases in greece in the near future. hitops Posted July 7, 2015 Report Posted July 7, 2015 (edited) This isn't personal finances. This is a national economy. It's impossible to pay back if you can't invest in things that will help the economy grow and get money into the hands of those who will signal demand. Ummm no you 'investing in things' is not the only option. Wealth is largely generated by producing things. Large scale investment projects do not produce wealth, they just move taxed wealth from a large group (the whole population) to a smaller one (whoever is working on the 'invested' project). The economy grows in private hands. It always has and always will. Just check where the tax base comes from. People create wealth, and the government takes it. We can only hope that they spend it on things that make life better rather than just waste it. Edited July 7, 2015 by hitops Quote
Vancouver King Posted July 7, 2015 Report Posted July 7, 2015 Toronto Dominion Bank today became the second major Canadian bank to confirm what Main Street has known for months - Canada is in recession. Official confirmation will take place Sept 1st - 6 months of declining GDP. Can you imagine the political implication for the governing party? As a campaign weapon just 7 weeks out from Oct. 19th, the confirmed recession could very well be the death knell for Harper's Conservatives. Vancouver King Posted July 9, 2015 Report Posted July 9, 2015 So Greece's situation holds implications for Canada, eh? How about the $3 trillion wiped off Chinese stock markets in recent weeks. Does this mean less investment in overseas housing markets like Toronto and Vancouver? Does it confirm a major downturn in China's economy with direct implications for our resource exports? Lessons from Greece? As Argus would say, "small beer". Quote When the people have no tyrant, their public opinion becomes one. ...... Lord Lytton
