Now, I have never been to this festival but there are plenty of performances that can be found on youtube. I am completely obsessed with this band 'Future Islands'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCO61vqO_Y0 and it was a great performance at the festival.

Did anyone get to this festival and if not, what would have been your favourite performance?

Oooh! Motorhead!

I think Lemmy is about 70 now, but to borrow Johnny Cash's line, he sings about as good as he ever did.

Alabama Shakes was there as well. They have been on my radio a lot lately. I like this song, except for the opening screech, which causes my cat to go on full alert.

Alabama Shakes I can dig! Love her! However, I only made it through 2 minutes of motorhead. heh, our age gap!

I remember seeing Motorhead, and Hawkwind, for that matter, when I was a youngster. I think I still have Motorhead's debut album, on vinyl, somewhere.

I just can't take it now. I couldn't even manage 2 minutes.

Edit> Thanks for the intro to Future Islands, a band I had never heard of. If the song you posted is typical, I'm going to look up more.

I looked at the 2015 lineup and didn`t know or like a whole lot of the acts. I listedned to Florence and the Machine and Future Islands today for the first time due to recommendations here, but not really my thing. Motorhead, however..lol

The Waterboys, The Who (like, if this was 30 years ago) Patti Smith, a few of the punkers like the Buzzcocks is all I really saw that I personally liked. I guess I am also old and out of the loop.

Regarding what I said about Motorhead: The Johnny Cash line was a self-deprecating quip from late in his life when he was continuing to record new songs. An interviewer asked him how his voice was holding up, and he chuckled and replied "it's about as good as it ever was." He was poking fun at himself, saying he was never a good singer.

This clip of Motorhead reminded me of that story, because he sounds very old and just about worn out.

I'd still love to see him perform, though. I've been a fan for such a long time.

I used to love the summer festival season, we would go to 3 or 4 every year. Just like the talk of a music age gap in this thread I now feel too old for it. The thought of heat stroke, $8 water, $11 beer, crappy sound and watching from a kilometer away is no longer appealing. I do miss those days though.

Seeing him for the first time in Sept. Pumped for MH...and a few others.

Wow that's an outstanding lineup. I've seen AlexisOnFire, Weezer, Rancid and Motorhead. AOF was great, Rancid is fun and I will always have a soft spot for Motohead. I only saw Weezer live once and they were low energy and boring. Their sound was great, Rivers voice was really good, but they barely interacted with the crowd.

I was a fan of Drive Like Jehu back in the day so I'd love to see them now. Plus I'd want to see Against Me, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Joy Formidable, The Dead Milkmen, Eagles of Deathmetal and Die Mannequin. I can't believe GWAR is still around.

Agreed. I'm not a huge Weezer fan anyways, did Hashpipe in an old cover band, but meh.

Rancid is a big pull for me, as are Cancer Bats.

I agree with almost all of your choises, but never understood Die Mannequin..so many friends go mad for them.

Of course, AOF is gonna rock...so glad they are back doing this tour.

For those of us a little older, Motorhead was just one more of the garbage metal bands and hair bands that polluted the 80's music scene. There were so many heavy metal bands that were in an arms race - trying to scream louder, crank up their amps louder, and were lucky if they could pound out three chords on a guitar. I guess I just wasn't a fan!

Alabama Shakes was there as well. They have been on my radio a lot lately. I like this song, except for the opening screech, which causes my cat to go on full alert.

I was impressed by their latest album, since their popularity from their debut was often written off as a one off event that would fade away when the novelty of roots r&b wore off. Rock fans have to acknowledge that a lot of sexism...borderline misogyny was part of this, because women in rock are judged more by their looks than their music, and let's face it...Brittany Rogers (if I got her name right) is not a covergirl or going to be offered a modelling career!

And their 2nd album shows that they have branched out and can write and play a range of music styles that few expected....so, they're not going to fade away any time soon...unless they break up or something.

I'm not really into most of her music, but I like some songs. I remember seeing Florence on Austin City Limits a few years ago, and in the post-show interview, she mentioned that she was a serious ballet student as a child, but was warned by her instructors that she was getting too tall, and would have to give it up before serious injury. And it seems the barefoot thing is not just some hippie thing, but more that going barefoot provides sure footedness.

I can see how this works since I had to give up running shoes and now run barefoot or more often in minimal shoes. The less shoe you wear, the less at risk you are to slip or twist something.

That's interesting about the barefeet. Yes, I can that, especially with the way she moves all over the stage!

I hear ya AC. But, those were good times, for sure. Did you have to bear the weight of a chick on your shoulders?

Of course...but back then that wasn't a burden, it was an opportunity! I love music but I think I liked the camping at festivals more than the shows.

One of my all time favourite (barely) memories was partying around a campfire after a festival. We had a couple of people in our group with guitars and we were all drunk singing songs from the day. Back then it would have been the Tea Party, I Mother Earth, Our Lady Peace, Limblifter, Glueleg, Spacehog, Three Doors Down type stuff. Anyway, our musical, campfire party attracted 50-60 people. In a euphoric chemical fueled haze, coupled with desperation to impress a very attractive, hippy-like, grunge fan, I convinced 20+ people to dance naked, co-ed Lord Of The Flies style around our fire. You know it was a good time when you wake up with toasted marshmallow residue stuck to your bare ass.

I attended many festivals in Southern Ontario when they were free! So many artists. I can't imagine paying the ticket prices now. It's crazy! The festivals I attended passed the hat on the last night of the festival. Times they are a-changing.

Grassroots...I love it. When my kids are older and more independent, I look forward to joining the music scene as that crazy, out of place, old guy. Until then I will be coaching minor league sports and making nut free lunches.

Good Advice. My oldest is just starting to find his way musically. I will definitely bring him to some shows soon.

I brought my daughters to their first concert, Alannah Myles. She rocked the place in her black leather outfit, then Sarah Maclachlan in her braided pigtails. They have been hooked ever since.
