Good, I’m glad you’ve acknowledged that ISIS is a threat, worse than Saddam…..but what makes you so sure ISIS never would have attempted to take over? Didn’t you already regurgitate Wikipedia and suggest the formation of ISIS predates the 2003 invasion? Likewise, ISIS wasn’t deterred by the equally brutal Assad regime in Syria, so ISIS has rose in Syria but it wouldn’t have in a Saddam controlled Iraq?

I never said any such thing, the Kurds did.<--- Sounds familiar doesn't it.

You can't prove that they would have.

I see, so if a regional war were to occur in the Middle East, a war that could stop or curtail ~60% of the World’s oil reserves from entering the World’s markets, we just simply fuel our economy with something else………..Well if its that easy, you have me convinced!!!! Brilliant!!!!

Well I'm glad you agree that curtailing the use of oil is a good idea for humanity! It's evident that our economy suffers when Oil output is high and prices low. Maybe it's time to diversify. This is what happens when you put all your eggs in the oil basket. Can't expect oil groupies to understand that though but we will get them to come around eventually.

I never made that distinction..... that's your projection. it's really easy to play dumb isn't it? I can play this game too.

Matthew Fisher is always worth reading.

There is a broad national consensus on defence Down Under instead of our deep chasm between handwringers and realists. Our elites want Canada to be heroic in some touchy-feely way but at the same time to remain boy scouts, unbloodstained, to let others carry the fight for us. They want to play armchair quarterback in a game they not only despise but do not understand.

http://news.nationalpost.com/2015/01/28/matthew-fisher-openness-over-combat-with-isis-bites-harper-government/

Exactly, as Fisher suggested, the British SAS and Americans SEALs, Green Berets and Delta Force (likewise the Australian SAS) have been there for months.........Canadian special forces aren't the only ones locating and targeting ISIS forces on the ground....

Right......so ISIS was able to help topple one regime, but Saddam would have posed to great nut to crack....

You know oil accounts for ~8% of Canada's GDP right?

Well no, I provided a quote of you actually stating as much.........unlike you, I'll quote the actual post and not utilize made up projections ;)

Right......so ISIS was able to help topple one regime, but Saddam would have posed to great nut to crack....

Considering that there are probably ex-members of Saddams army in ISIS ranks, they most likely would have been at least outnumbered. Again you cannot make that claim as they existed there for years without doing so. Just another opinion.

You know oil accounts for ~8% of Canada's GDP right?

Yes but I've been over this with other people, there are a large amount of people employed in the oil industry. Government revenues of Oil at all levels are in the billions. All other industries suffer. why do you think they have been delaying the budget? They have to make a new one because they have much less money to work with. Ask the people down in Estevan that had to go hand their house keys over to the bank because they have been laid off. The housing market suffers, the retail industry suffers. All industries suffer. I don't think you fully grasp the thousands of workers that make up some of richest portions of the middle class that have been laid off in the last few months in Central Canada. The thousands of workers that travel to this area from other provinces to make money then head back home in the east. There is talk of a possible recession in Alberta. And a threat to the housing bubble as well. If we had a more diversified economy this would not happen.

ISIS was/is outnumbered by the current Iraqi army........Of course its an opinion, likewise your claim ISIS wouldn't have risen without the 2003 invasion.......

Clearly ~8% of our economy in one sector is too great.......

Don't let facts get in the way of a good anti-oil rant though....

Tell that to the nearly 23,000 people in jobs linked to the oil industry to be laid off this year. You still don't understand the concept at all do you? It effects all industries reflected in the GDP not just the 8% it represents. Suncor has already cut 1,000 jobs and Schlumberger has already cut 9,000 this year and it's only January.

Tell them what? That the last time oil dropped this much, in such a drastic fashion (2009), that it rebounded within 6 months?

None the less, your emotional rantings aside, the oil and gas sector only makes up 8% of our economy.......hardly all the eggs in one basket as you suggest

You think it will rebound by summer? Considering that's when road bans are on many people may not be back to work until next winter in the oil industry. You still aren't understanding the concept. These people make money, lots of it, and they spend it on things, lots of things. When they are laid of, they stop making money, so they stop spending money on things. Are you still following? When they can't spend their money on other sectors, those sectors are harmed. Then there is the oil industry itself. Which spends money on the manufacturing sector, lots of money. When the manufacturing sector that makes things for the oil industry has less money spent on it, they will lay people off as well. All of these people getting laid off spend money on the service sector. When less money is spent on the service sector, the service sector has less money and must lay people off. Are you understanding how an economy works now?

That wasn't a statement that was a question.

I linked to a message that quoted you saying..

"I never suggested that Iraq or Afghanistan were part of a Canadian Empire, but as suggested by Smith, both are/were clearly countries without "regular Government" until established by Western force

after you stated that both countries were countries without a "regular government" I then asked

Please define what a "regular government" is then, because it appears to be very clear you did say neither of them had governments.

You then defined a regular government as

Government as experienced by Smith…….does stable democracy work for you?

I then asked

So a government has to be a stable democracy in order to be considered a government?

You then said

I never made that distinction..... that's your projection.

When in fact you made the distinction that both never had a "regular government" and when I asked a government must be a democracy in order to be considered a government? You pretended like you never said that they do when in fact you did say it.

Yeah, the oil and gas sector makes-up a whopping 8% of Canada's GDP..........quite the contrast to your eggs in one basket meme, a clear indication that you don't understand how the economy works..........

Oil and gas is clearly a peaks and valleys industry and will rebound, and tanks in a near cyclic fashion ...........you can quote and bookmark, but I'll predict $70-80 per bbl by late Spring- early Summer.....fore one thing is certain, the World runs on oil and the "glut" of one million bbl production won't last..........

8% of a nations GDP hardly makes an all eggs in one basket economy

Under your own definition of a "regular government" as a "stable democracy". That would mean that you, Derek 2.0, clearly stated that neither of the countries are/were countries with a government. It's right in front of your eyes. Open them.

You can't even look past the GDP can you. Is that what you use to gauge everything in an economy? Again another opinion. If it rebound it rebounds, but if it doesn't then I guess we deal with it at the time. Our eggs are clearly in the oil basket though given the effect it is having on the country and the dollar.
