socialist Posted December 13, 2014 Report Posted December 13, 2014 The Alberta government is trying to roll out a positive education initiative called Inspiring Education. This type of curriculum will replace the focus from rote knowledge to actual critical thinking and understanding through a discovery method where educators are expected to be facilitators of learning rather than dictators of boring knowledge. Now take a loom at this petition in Alberta and you will see how little the general public knows about what is best for young learners. I laugh as I read the reasons people give for signing. People DO NOT understand 21st Century Leaning and 21st Century Skills. Just because you went to school in the 70s doesn't mean you are an expert on 21st Century Learning. We are preparing learners for jobs that don't exist. https://www.change.org/p/honourable-education-minister-gordon-dirks-knowledge-is-power-stop-the-breakdown-of-our-children-s-education Quote Thankful to have become a free thinker.

Are these people not using their democratic right to disagree. I thought some good points were made. I am not saying the new system should be scrapped but it has issues. Parents are hiring tutors and holding study groups teaching kids how to do simple math. Parents are upset that their kids are not able to do the things that they themselves could do at that age. They still think memorizing times tables out of context is important. You nailed it though. People are upset because the system has moved past the archaic system of old where kids sat in rows and educators lectured knowledge. It's not like that anymore. You have a lot to learn about modern education my friend. Quote Thankful to have become a free thinker.

NIce little fairy tale, but I don't believe it. No teacher in his/her right mind would criticize the 4 Cs. Did your friend wear a wire so you could hear what he said? overthere Posted December 13, 2014 Report Posted December 13, 2014 Ironically, the author of the petition is a physician with far more (public) education than the OP. The 'discovery learning' program has been a flop in Alberta since it began a decade ago to much opposition. A decade ago, as measured by independent international rating body PISA, Alberta students overall were easily at the top of student achievement testing in Canada and near the top internationally. Not anymore, and the prime reason is the program Comrade Socialist touts all the time. Luckily, teachers are sabotaging the program from within, school boards are backing off, and Alberta Education is crumbling under the assault by angry parents. This crap won';t be around much longer. Topaz Posted December 13, 2014 Report Posted December 13, 2014 What I find disappointing in education in this country is that ALL students are NOT equal. For starters we have large school board and small school boards and those with large have better schools, offer more of a chance of a better education , while the smaller board can only offer the basics and this goes for public through to high school. Then there's the issue of First Nations education problems. Without a doubt, education is power and we need to make sure ALL Canadians are equal in getting the best money has to offer. Okay, tell me were I'm wrong. Quote

Understand facts before posting nonsense. The minimum requirement for a physician is about 7 years at uni. The minimum education for a teacher is four. It's extremely competitive to get into and stay in medical school, neither is true of Faculties of Education. The coursework and stress and hours in Medicine are far more onerous. The consequences of error are much worse in Medicine. In reality, medicine attracts far more qualified candidates. I'll say it again: far more Quote Science too hard for you? Try religion!

Bryan Posted December 13, 2014 Report Posted December 13, 2014 The minimum education for an educator IS NOT 4 years anymore. Look it up. You're right. Many teachers have even less education than that. Quote
socialist Posted December 13, 2014 Author Report Posted December 13, 2014 You're right. Many teachers have even less education than that. Bryan, you are just trolling. Teachers need a minimum of 5 years post secondary education. Many of us who will complete our masters will require 7 years. After all that hard work people will still complain because teachers will make 90-100 K. It makes me sick. Public education benefits society as a whole. And by the way, I am hearing many good things coming out of your home province of Manitoba in regards to public education. Be glad you have a government that understands the importance of public education and funds it appropriately. Quote Thankful to have become a free thinker.

Michael Hardner Posted December 14, 2014 Report Posted December 14, 2014 Doesn't take a genius to work in the TAR SANDS. This is a generally insulting comment. People contribute to society in whatever ways they can. Getting good marks in school is not actually an indication of "intelligence", whatever that is. There are certain skills that can't be measured, and you can utterly fail in your studies while still being a "genius" in certain other ways. Quote Click to learn why Climate Change is caused by HUMANS Michael Hardner

Eco-justice is a term I haven't heard before, it sounds like something that would come out of a kind of academic branding exercise. I believe in environmental conservation. But it's off topic. Insulting and inaccurate, since resource development requires engineers and technicians with educations that exceed the intellectual demands of a teaching degree. Many trades take a level of problem solving, training and tech knowledge that is intense and requires constant upgrading. If you're a dummy dropout with poor grades, you aren't making big bucks.
