Big Guy Posted November 12, 2014 Report Posted November 12, 2014 Mankind has managed to hit a bullet with a bullet, Ten years ago, the Rosetta spacecraft was launched with the intent of landing on a comet which was speeding around the sun at about 135,000 km/hr. It took the spacecraft six billion kilometers to eventually catch it. Yesterday, the lander Philae landed safely on the comet. I find it fascinating that the scientists of many different countries are able to work collectively to attain such a difficult goal but politicians of the world still cannot settle their differences without war. If you key in "Philae" into you search engine and the details will be available for you. Guest Posted November 12, 2014 Report Posted November 12, 2014 I was thinking exactly the same thing this morning when I read that it had landed. A great achievement. Quote

Mighty AC Posted November 17, 2014 Report Posted November 17, 2014 (edited) Philae is likely doomed to a deep sleep now. Due to the grappling hooks not catching properly, the lander rebounded and ended up in an area that only receives 1.5 hours of sun per day. That's not enough to warm the batteries to the point that they can accept a charge. Bummer. http://www.iflscience.com/space/philae-lander-runs-out-juice Edited November 17, 2014 by Mighty AC Quote "Our lives begin to end the day we stay silent about the things that matter." - Martin Luther King Jr"Those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities" - Voltaire
WWWTT Posted November 17, 2014 Report Posted November 17, 2014 While the western countries spent hundreds of millions on this project, tens of thousands here on Earth died of starvation/disease and preventable causes! Interesting stuff! But trivial. WWWTT Quote Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! Down over $1,500 in less than one year! Total fail of the moderation on this site! Big Guy Posted November 17, 2014 Author Report Posted November 17, 2014 One would assume that firing our rocket 10 years ago to eventually catch and land on a comet going 140,000 km hr would guarantee it landing on a plateau or other desirable spot. What is wrong with these engineers anyway ??!!?? Quote Note - For those expecting a response from Big Guy: I generally do not read or respond to posts longer then 300 words nor to parsed comments.
WWWTT Posted November 17, 2014 Report Posted November 17, 2014 They would have starved anyway. Yep! So will those in the US who have no health service die prematurely. Can't let people dieing of preventable causes stop the cloak of weapons advance progression! WWWTT Quote Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! Down over $1,500 in less than one year! Hopefully they got it to collect/send enough data to be considered a success. I don't want to wait another 10 years! Quote

It is a waste of resources that could save lives... and it would sure improve the forum too! Quote

I don't want to wait another 10 years! Apparently, the were able to run one complete test cycle so they should have everything they need. Plus the orbiter is still doing its job. It's also possible for the asteroid to rotate at some point so Philae could end up with enough sunlight. Big Guy Posted November 18, 2014 Author Report Posted November 18, 2014 I think the solution is simple. We send a missile with a small warhead to intercept the comet, hit it lightly on one side causing it to turn slightly towards the sun and exposing the solar panels to the sunlight. And this can be accomplished by: A=(a_{ij})_{i,j=1 and taking into account G=j{i,i ...........
