Big Guy Posted May 19, 2014 Report Posted May 19, 2014 Narendra Modi won the most decisive election victory that India has seen in more than a quarter century and swept the long-dominant Congress party from power. Modi led his Bharatiya Janata Party through a dazzling, high-tech election campaign which resulted in a landslide election that surprised even his own campaign. Is this new government a good thing or a bad thing for Canada? Guest Posted May 19, 2014 Report Posted May 19, 2014 Do you think he'll do away with the caste system? I'd vote for him if he'd do that. Quote
Argus Posted May 19, 2014 Report Posted May 19, 2014 Do you think he'll do away with the caste system? I'd vote for him if he'd do that. Dunno. I do know that he was inadmisable to Canada or the US, at least until very recently (might have changed now), because his actions as governor were considered to have contributed, if not supported the slaughter of thousands of innocent people. overthere Posted May 20, 2014 Report Posted May 20, 2014 Wait and see. It is a major accomplishment to win a majority in India, and defeat the mighty Congress Party while doing it. Indias biggest problem is not popualtion or environment or the economy overall, it is rampant orruption and that includes every level of government including the highest levels. Bright young people aspire to the civil service in India(which is massive) not because they can apply their brains but because it can ultimately be the best paid job through kickbacks. That has to change, and it is Modis great challenge. For the record, IMO India is the greatest example of democracy in the history of democracy. It is an incredibly diverse place, with hundreds of languiages spoked(about 22 official languages), may ethnic groups, races, religions and very different cultures in a large country. Depsite their many differences, their elections are an important part of all cultures and the process/results are widely respected by all. It should be impossible to govern, but somehow it gets done. Wilber Posted May 20, 2014 Report Posted May 20, 2014 Pretty good voter turnout as well. Better than our last five federal elections and better than every US presidential election since 1912. Bet they don't have online voting either. Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC
-TSS- Posted May 20, 2014 Report Posted May 20, 2014 I wonder would the constituent states of India be better or worse off if they each were independent countries instead of being part of an insanely large and dysfunctional country. Quote
