In the early morning of last Sunday, an 18-year-old girl was rushed to hospital with suspected alcohol poisoning after a party at 24 Sussex Drive, the official residence of the prime minister and his family.

The legal drinking age in Ontario is 19 and it is illegal to provide alcohol to minors. The legal drinking age in nearby Quebec is 18.

Harper's son, Ben, was born in 1996 and turned 18 on Saturday. He was celebrating his birthday at the residence.

The Prime Minister's Office refused to say whether alcohol was served at 24 Sussex or whether there was any booze at Ben's birthday party.

The RCMP, responsible for Harper's security, has declared that it will not intervene.

The person who is Prime Minister heads a party whose major priority is law and order.

Many media outlets have decided that this is “private”, not for public scrutiny and did not cover this story.

Is it anybody's business as to what happens in the personal lives at 24 Sussex drive?

Is there a public right to know about the private life of the Prime Minister?

Does the media have the responsibility and right to filter out what it believes is news and what is not news?

Is this much ado about nothing?

Judgement is judgement!

If the conservatives can parade their family members around to win votes, then guess what, don't complain when they screw up!

The only reason why the conservatives paraded their family members to win votes is to give the illusion that they are good parents and good custodians!

Oh but when an ambulance needs to be called to help a self inflicted alcohol poisoning case for an under aged woman, no it's none of your business what happened, it's a family matter!

I hope Harper gets his butt drilled in the house of commons over this one!

I guess Rob Ford was over to help with the bar duties!

Oh and by the way BG, you should title your thread a little more clear!

You'll stimulate the debate better.

I think it should be investigated. Then again I have amazing parents and my 17 year old sister is an alcoholic who was in the last suicidal.

She's not of legal age to drink in Ontario, and if she was at 24 Sussex, then someone should have been responsible enough to stop it...theoretically.

Unless and until the girl wants to come forward, it's a private matter. She's an adult, responsible for her own actions.

Sure, if it wasn't at the PM of Canada's house!

Let me ask you, did the PM pay for that house with his own money? How about the security there, was that privately funded?

Let me remind you that the law may have been broken at 24 Sussex and if this was any other residence, this event may have resulted in criminal charges!

But let the conservative symbolic ritual of throwing people under the bus begin! It's going to take a whole lot of kids getting thrown under the bus to cleans Harper's hands of this one!

I would suspect that Harper probably thought it was better to have his son and friends celebrate his son's bday at home rather than at some bar in Quebec or somewhere else. However, it seemed to have backfired. This. in my opinion does not need to be investigated any further. Surely, there are more important things to investigate.

Pretty ironic for illegal stuff to be going on in the PM's house given his ideologies, but I couldn't possibly care less about an 18yo getting drunk. We should eliminate the drinking age altogether.

I'd disappointed in the Prime Minister's son, he should have known better. Every Ottawa kid knows that you can just go to Hull if you want to get tanked.

I agree with WestCoastRunner and a few others. This does not warrant investigation. This is so normal it's banal.

Unless anyone believes that the Prime Minister has some actual, real-time personal responsibility ( as opposed to the "buck stops here" sort of Executive "responsibility").

It's "normal" to be rushed to the hospital via EMS for alcohol poisoning??????

It's normal for the EMS to be called to 24 Sussex to save a teen from alcohol poisoning?????

It's normal for a teen to be served alcohol to the point where her life is in danger at the Prime Ministers house?????

I don't think you understand what happened!

I can clearly see why Rob Ford is still so popular!

Agreed. You're either an adult or you're not. These staggered ages across the country are ridiculous.

Oh so now it's the fault of the law?

Oh wait who made those laws????

Oh ya, progressive conservatives!

I suspect this one will blow over pretty quick. Hell's bell's I was able to get a few beer into me before I was 19 (I'm from Ontario) and the world didn't come to an end. Well, maybe it did for me, for a few hours.

Something tells me those few beers that you got into you weren't supplied from24 Sussex, and you didn't have to be rushed to the hospital or you would have died!!!

Devi's in the details, isn't it!

Ya like increasing the penalty for smoking marijuana

Man some of these comments in this thread are so out there!!!!

This is the end of Harper parading his family to win votes!

This is the end of the conservatives being tough on crime!

This is, hopefully the end of Harpers political career!

If conservatives don't care about Rob Ford smoking crack and hanging out with drug-dealing gangs, then they sure as hell aren't going to care about an 18 year old coming close to alcohol poisoning in the Prime Minister's residence. We're talking about a party that was found in contempt of parliament and that describes their supporters perfectly. Nothing but contempt for parliament.

IF this was at my place, I'd be charged with contributing to a minor. And if the girl dies, them murder charges or something similar. Harper and family are not above the law, and they are representatives of our country while Harper is PM. This should be investigated. Harper is a public employee living in a residence paid for by taxpayers.

Private matter? I'd like to be able to claim that if something like this was to happen to me.
