WestCoastRunner Posted April 13, 2014 Report Posted April 13, 2014 It will happen the same year that people give up cash and do everything electronically. If you say so. On Guard for Thee Posted April 13, 2014 Report Posted April 13, 2014 IMO people who are informed and follow politics will take the time to go out and vote. I don't think it's a good think for lazy uninformed people to be given the most lazy-accessible ways to vote. I also don't think the emphasis should be on getting more young people to vote, the emphasis should be on getting more young people informed & politically active...which will then naturally lead them to go out and vote in higher numbers. I would agree with a portion of what you say, namely people who spend all day staring aimlessly into their blackberry may not be the most adept of voters. However, they do have the right to vote under our laws and so perhaps if they could just do it online they may actually take a moment to think about it and cast at least a somewhat informed ballot, as opposed to none at all. And hey, when we're gone, they're still here. Quote

These are the instruments that most young and older folks use when conducting business. To say that we stare aimlessly is a bit biased. We are very busy and we can't be tied down to a laptop so we use our mobile devices. And if we want to vote online, why not? Quote I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. My concern with teh blackberry comment is pretty much another issue, or maybe not. Sure some of us do business with the thing, I think the young folks unfortunately simply waste a lot of time with trivia, as they stumble off the curb into traffic or into the pool at the shopping mall. I think real social interaction is suffering severly, but I think we should be able to vote with technology. I do my banking with it after all. And I'm gonna tell ya, my paltry bank acount is pretty important to me as is my right to vote. Quote

And as far as young folks wasting time on their mobile devices, you simply do not know that for a fact. After all, we are spending our time on this forum and probably on a laptop or desktop and maybe we are neglecting our social interaction. My point is, that people of all ages use digital medium in every aspect of their life. It makes sense to include online voting. Shady Posted April 13, 2014 Report Posted April 13, 2014 Online voting is a bad idea. It'll only encourage the low information individual to decide to vote. I don't want those people voting. If they want to vote, they should have to make a little effort, and report to their polling station. As for the elderly and/or disabled. Voting my mail, or early voting, or other such ideas can always be incorporated into the voting process. Quote

Wilber Posted April 13, 2014 Report Posted April 13, 2014 I am not talking 20 year olds. Think 20-30 year olds. They have grown up in the digital and social media age. If we want to engage them in politics and voting, we need to embrace their way of life and habits. If they grew up in the digital and social media age, why are they so clueless when it comes to politics? Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC
WestCoastRunner Posted April 13, 2014 Report Posted April 13, 2014 If they grew up in the digital and social media age, why are they so clueless when it comes to politics? I am quite sure they aren't. However, they are bound by digital media. Why is that so hard to understand? We need to get with it. TimG Posted April 13, 2014 Report Posted April 13, 2014 (edited) I am quite sure they aren't. However, they are bound by digital media. Why is that so hard to understand? We need to get with it.Do they have a digital driver's license or bus pass? Do they have a digital passport? Do they every use cash? Whether you like it or not our society still relies on physical mediums to communicate sensitive information. There may come a day 30 or 40 years from now when these paper documents disappear (personally I doubt it) but until they do online voting will be as cumbersome as voting by mail and anyone looking for an easy way to vote will be disappointed. I would be OK with online voting if people were honest about what it is (i.e. it will a pain to use but its DIGITAL). The trouble is it will be promoted by activists as simpler way to vote when it cannot possibly be that - not with the paper ID systems that we have today. Edited April 13, 2014 by TimG Quote

TimG Posted April 13, 2014 Report Posted April 13, 2014 For crying out loud. We are talking about online voting! Give it a break!!!As I said, you clearly do not understand the nature of the security problems that need to be solved and the processes that would be required to ensure the integrity of the system. If these problems are solved the process will look a lot like the process for voting by mail today. Quote

Heaven forbid. Apparently if voting was easy, the votes might not get cast for Harper, which is why the unfair elections act has been spawned. Quote
