MP Kenny doesn't think carpenter in Ontario and maybe other province should be forced to be license because it could kill jobs. I disagree, and think Mike Holmes would agree. Many of the homeowners that have gotten into trouble with carpenters were not licensed and therefore it cost thousand of dollars by the time Holmes get done fixing the problems. I think all plumbers, electricians and carpenters should prove that they know what they are doing and the only way is with a license. Make the cost of the license cheap and the courses for those who want to work in the industry reasonable. Thoughts? http://www.torontosun.com/2014/04/03/ontario-plan-to-licence-carpenters-will-kill-jobs-jason-kenney

Even with licences half of them don't know what they're doing and a sizeable chunk of them are crooks. The problem is we do a miserable job of training people for the trades. We make it overly complex to the point where if you don't know someone to guide you through most people don't even bother.

I believe that the adage of getting informed, shop around and ask for (and check) references is still the best process. Inspection of renovations done recently by the tradesmen is always a good idea. What else I have learned is to plan early. The "good" ones are usually very busy and if you plan far enough ahead you can get fitted in to your satisfaction.

This College of Trades fee that Ontario is forcing people to pay is one giant cash grab. It's over $100 a year.

I don't mind having people be licensed but Ontario is just forcing people to join some club to pad their coffers. It's despicable actually.

Funny no one seemed to mind the license fee that engineers and doctors must pay. Some may say that their work has life or death consequences........doesn't the guy wiring your house or pipefitting your gas line?

Methinks you are confusing the certification with the licence form this so called 'college'

An electrician goes thru the aprentice stuff, works with an cert electrician and passes an exam and gets licenced, none of this is the College of Trades business.

I have to pay for a licence every year from my professional body, but they can discipline , remove or revoke same, the COllege could do none of that.

Think more along the lines of the BBB.....in some respects the most useless of all of them.

Please leave Mike Holmes out of this discussion. Some of the repair work he does is silly and completely over the top. It's TV and would be boring as shit without some invented drama.

I think the current system of licenses and permits is fine.

Around here, you need a building permit for work that is structural. It gets inspected. Fair enough.

Science too hard for you? Try religion!

No I mean license....a funding stream to ensure the profession can discipline/control themself.....to avoid gov't bureaucracy.....to be substituted by license board bureaucracy.

You think finding live wires near gas or water pipe not dangerous? How about a homeowner paying for service by a contractor only to find it wouldn't pass the building codes?
